Sumerian has acquired the North American rights to brutal coming-of-age story “Mascot,” which had its world premiere in January at Slamdance, and its international premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam the same month.
Sumerian is planning a limited theatrical release this year under the English title “Fortunate Son.” The pickup marks the second acquisition for Sumerian’s new film and streaming division, which launched this year.
Sumerian founder Ash Avildsen said the film is “a dark, brutally authentic and beautifully shot independent film centered around troubled youth in unorthodox households. It will undoubtedly strike a nerve with audiences who appreciate gritty arthouse drama, as it did with me.”
With his radical behavior, teenager Jerry endangers not only himself but his entire family. At first glance, Jerry seems like a normal teenager. He lives with his single mother Abbey and younger sister in a quiet coastal town and helps out...

Belgian actor Lubna Azabal, who appeared in Oscar nominated films “Paradise Now” and “Incendies,” and French actor Slimane Dazi, who appeared in Oscar nominated “A Prophet” and Palme d’Or contender “Only Lovers Left Alive,” have joined the cast of Shariff Nasr’s buzzy feature debut “El Houb” (“The Love”).
Azabal, 47, ages up to play the role of the protagonist’s elderly mother in the film, which charts a son’s coming out journey to his Moroccan-Dutch family.
As previously reported, the film stars the Dutch TV and theater actor Fahd Larhzaoui – best known for his presenting role on long-running Dutch kids TV series “Huisje Boompje Beestje.”

September Films boss Pim Hermeling has revealed details of his ambitious plans to remould his company as a vertically integrated outfit, combining production and exhibition with distribution.
Hermeling will soon be launching a major new, eight-screen 800 seat cinema in the Dutch province of Utrecht.
The Kade, as it will be called, is a joint venture between September Films (formerly Wild Bunch Benelux) and the Hku Univeristy of the Arts.
Building work on the venue will begin shortly and the venue is due to open in late 2016 or early 2017.
The veteran Dutch distributor recently set up September Films Production, a new outfit that will look to co-produce using the Dutch cash rebate incentive set up last year.
Hermeling has also been on an early autumn buying spree.
One recent September acquisition is A War (Krigen), directed by Tobias Lindholm. The film, sold by StudiCanal, is screening this week in Venice’s Orizzonti.

“Meet And Greet” is Iffr’s new initiative to allow the public and industry visitors to encounter filmmakers in an informal setting.
The idea falls somewhere between a social event and a mini press conference.
Ludmila Cvikova, a programmer at International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) for many years and a former head of international programming at the Doha Film Institute, is overseeing the afternoon sessions, which take place at the bar in the corner of the Doelen, close to the box office, at around 4pm every day.
“The idea is to give a special attention to filmmakers who are bringing films as premieres to Rotterdam,” Cvikova explains.
Each afternoon, Cvikova interviews up to four directors on stage. The interviews are scheduled to be after the press and industry screenings - but before the public screenings - of these directors’ films. For journalists and industry delegates, it is an opportunity to ask questions about films they have seen...

When daddy arrives at the door with shotgun in hand to take his young son away you just know that things are going to go badly. How could they not? And they do, indeed, in Remy van Heugten's Gluckauf. A selection of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, van Heugten's film spins expectations on their head by focusing less on the criminal element of the story and more on the personal toll the lifestyle takes, particularly as it crosses generations. The title of the film itself appears to be a tip to van Heugten's general approach as it appears to be borrowed from a German tanker that ran ashore off the coast of Long Island, where the wreck became a tourist attraction. No subtitles on this...
