A woman is going to win Season 12 of American Idol — even if executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is forced to stage a crossover episode with Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, plant a couple of hungry lionesses down in the SwayBot pit and let the male contestants get picked off in violent, carnivorous fashion.

‘American Idol’ contestant Zoanette Johnson should not have been in the Top 10 girls this season, and it was never more apparent than her terrible performance on March 5. Here’s why she should be voted off the show right now.
Despite being one of the most memorable contestants of the season, Zoanette Johnson needs to be booted from American Idol Asap. On Feb. 27, Zoanette secured her position as one of the Top 10 girls by singing Elton John’s ”Circle Of Life.” On March 5, her horrible performance really made it clear the judges made a big mistake.
Zoanette has definitely provided an entertainment factor — making Keith Urban fall out of his chair and Nicki Minaj cry, but her rendition of Tina Turner‘s “What’s Love Got To Do With It” made it apparent that her top 10 spot was undeserved.
I was cringing as she sang — thinking that I’ve heard better at a karaoke bar.

When aliens finally come to Planet Earth — and if you’ve watched Battlestar Galactica or Contact, you know it’s just a matter of time — let’s hope the Cylons don’t judge the pop-cultural significance of American Idol based on its February 28, 2013 installment.
There are a thousand sleepytime metaphors I could call on to describe the tedious proceedings — gentle sheep leaping over fluffy clouds, the swooping descent of the Lunesta butterfly, a tin-soldier-esque lineup of the last letter of the alphabet (Zzzzzz) — but why not just speak the ugly truth of the episode: The final 10 guys competing for a...

Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban all made a mistake by putting Zoanette Johnson through to the top 20 on ‘American Idol.’ Find out why I think she should have been eliminated on Feb. 27.
Zoanette Johnson was named as one of the Top 20 contestants on season 12 of American Idol on Feb. 27. After a rousing rendition of Elton John’s ”Circle Of Life,” which brought Nicki Minaj to tears, Zoanette was pushed through to the next round of the compeition. Sadly, other season favorites went home in her place.
I’d like to describe Zoanette’s performance as both crazy and awful. Sure, she has a decent voice, but her flamboy-ish antics should not be what drives her in a singing competition.
Let’s not forget that Jennifer Hudson slayed the same song during season 3, and her performance puts Zoanette’s to shame. In fact, if you re-watch Jennifer’s performance,...

Ten more girls faced sudden-death elimination in Las Vegas last night as American Idol culled its top 40 down to a lean 20.
The first half of the night was filled with solid if not particularly memorable performances by talented singers with bright futures ahead of them. Randy Jackson described the evening's performances as a "mixed bag" verging on "sleepy" while resident optimist Keith Urban applauded the evening's "diversity." Perhaps the biggest surprise was the elimination of Cristabel Clack. The happily married worship leader belted out Alicia Keys' "No One" so...

Nicki Minaj was ready to sign two girls on the Feb. 27 episode of ‘American Idol’ — but wacky contestant Zoanette Johnson stole the show!
American Idol judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson gave Zoanette Johnson a standing ovation after she sang “Circle Of Life” from The Lion King! Who did You love tonight?
‘American Idol’ Recap
Melinda Ademi – “I really loved that performance. I think you have so much raw potential and talent,” Keith said. Randy said she might be in a little bit of trouble.
Candice Glover – Keith gave her a standing ovation after she sang “Natural Woman.”
Juliana Chahayed sang Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper.” Keith said her tone was very “pure” like Jewel and Taylor Swift.
Jett Hermano sang a stripped down version of Rihanna’s “Only Girl In The World.” She sounded good while playing along on the piano. Mariah said “there’s something different about you…...

Ten dames stepped up to the mic on Wednesday night. Nine of them sang. One of them exploded.
And was rewarded for it.
And... I'm fine with it? Let this be a lesson to everyone: If you are a fine singer who gets an opportunity to wow the nation on American Idol, but you choose the lite-fm nonchalance of Alicia Keys' "No One," maybe you deserve to finish between 20th and 40th place. Maybe I think that's justified, Cristabel Clacky. And maybe if you're a howling claymation clown sorceress named Zoanette Johnson who sets the bar for unthinkable camp monstrosities with a performance of (wait for it) "The Circle of Life," maybe you really do earn your place in the Top 20 -- even if you can't sing, control yourself, or really do anything except blubber and wail like a watercolor-drenched Pagliacci. Maybe.

The second group of girls faced sudden death on "American Idol" Wednesday, with only 5 out of 10 contestants advancing. This group had some real artists, but one performance stood out and left judge Nicki Minaj fighting back tears.1. Zoanette JohnsonLiberia-born Zoanette came out wearing an animal print dress, sporting a wild mane of hair and singing a song from "The Lion King." Her performance to "Circle of Life" could've easily been cliche, but instead, it was original and inspiring. Nicki Minaj, who herself immigrated to the U.S. (from Trinidad & Tobago), was emotional at the end. Zoanette has been at times too wild in the past, but tonight proved she could harness all her energy and deliver.2. Aubrey ClelandAubrey is a pretty girl with a pretty voice. And while she looks like an "American Idol", her slowed-down rendition of Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams" wasn't as convincing as it could've been, especially in this powerhouse group.

It's time for the second half of the "American Idol" Top 20 women. Last week, there were a handful of killer performances -- can this week live up?
Once again, we've previously seen about half of the women performing. It's a good thing the public isn't voting yet, half of them wouldn't stand a chance.
1. Melinda Ademi, "Nobody's Perfect," Jessie J
This is the same song Angela Miller did last week, but it's barely recognizable this go-round. The verse is way too low, her voice is inaudible in parts and muddy when you can hear it. Not a great key for her. The chorus gets better, but this still isn't showing off her voice at all and it's all very lackluster.
Keith Urban is strangely complimentary. We found that to be a pretty big dud. Nicki points out how it's hard not to compare her to Angela from last week, which is true.

The second set of 10 girls sang for their supper tonight on American Idol.
And just like last week, only 5 of them will survive the Sudden Death round and go on to croon another week. The biggest issue I can see with the Sudden Death setup is that by grouping the singers and cutting after each group of 10, the judges may have sent someone home last week who is better than those who will perform this week.
Will that turn out to be the case? Let's find out...

Are we locked in? Ready? American Idol's twelfth season is about to launch into its most awesome (and stressful, if you're me) section -- the Top 40 shakedown and the mega blitz of eliminations that we, the mean home viewers, get to decide. It's do or die for your weird personal favorites: That chick with the dreadlocks and beads who sings Donny Hathaway? She might be deported back to Birkenstock Island. That closeted homosexual with the Manilow confidence? Randy Jackson might decapitate him. Ahhh! Gay carnage.
Now that the winning 40 guys and girls of Season 12 have been announced, let's take a look back at the auditions we liked most. I've ranked them because I'm compulsive about this sort of thing.

Yes, yes, I hear you -- shut up, Louis, about your affection for the effete Southern balladeer who refuses to sing anything but pathetic country music of the 21st century.

It was the final day of Hollywood Week and there were 47 women angling for a spot in the top 20. In order to move from Hollywood to Las Vegas, the women had to sing for their lives (or at least for that part of their lives they wanted to spend on reality television). Contestants were given the choice of singing a song from a list of Idol-approved numbers or performing a royalty-free original song. Opting for the latter was 18-year-old Angela Miller, who easily earned herself a spot in the...

Now that Hollywood week has (finally) come to an end, will we be seeing the first signs of a potential female winner on American Idol after a six year absence? The way they’re framing the season so far, it looks like they’re hoping for that to happen!

Even though Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban basically forced down our throats that this has been the best set of girls ever on the show, I’d like to see what they’d say if Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood walked in the room!

American Idol really, really wants a woman to win this season. At the beginning of Thursday's episode, they reminded us that a female singer hasn't won the show since 2007, when Jordin Sparks bested Blake Lewis for the top prize.
Let's put this into perspective: The last time a woman won, George W. Bush was still president, J.K. Rowling was still writing the Harry Potter series, and no one had any idea who Snooki was. Well, maybe a few people knew her.
After Ryan Seacrest all but begged us to vote for a female, we finally got to see the level of the women's talent.

The end of American Idol's 12th Hollywood Week is upon us, as the girls battle it out during solo rounds. At the end of the day, 20 will be left standing to join this season's top male contestants.
Let's find out who will be moving on to Las Vegas, shall we?
Each female singer will have the option of choosing a song from the Idol song list or singing an original number for her solo audition. This is a new twist for this stage of the competition, one which doesn't seem to have been offered to the guys last week.
Angela Miller chooses option two and decides to sing an original song for the judges. She plays piano with Idol musicians backing her and it gives me chills it's so good. Angela just set the bar so incredibly high it's going to be hard for the other girls to compete with her.

Thursday night's (Feb. 14) episode of "American Idol" starts by asking if a girl can win. We don't actually think a girl can win anymore, honestly. But you don't necessarily have to win the whole thing to have success.
It's the final day of Hollywood Week. 47 women will be whittled down to 20 (and presumably, we'll see the 28 men cut down to 20 as well).
Here are the highlights:
Group One:
Angela Miller takes a risk by performing an original song. Hmm. Turns out, however, that she's pretty incredible. The judges are blown away. Keith Urban looks like he's about to cry. Also in that group are Candice Glover on "Girl on Fire" and Janelle Arthur on "I Told You So" and both are great. Who is not great is Zoanette Johnson, but that's no big surprise. She really has no business still being there. She makes up her song on the spot and it's like -- Ok.

It's part 2 of Hollywood Week on "American Idol." The men's week was surprisingly free of drama. We don't think the women's turn will be quite so chill (no offense, ladies).
It's a long episode, so strap in kiddos. Here are some highlights:
Recovering anorexic Mariah Pulice does a nice job, but her crying sister really gets to us. Angela Miller rocks some "Who You Are," while Victoria Acosta sounds solid on "Killing Me Softly." The latter two advance, but not Mariah. Bummer. We see Ashley Smith, Ann Defany and Sarah Restuccio all get cut as well. It's a country face-off between Rachel Hale and Janelle Arthur, though since it's not actually an either/or proposition, they both advance. However, Janelle's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" brought tears to our eyes, it was so good.Mariah Carey gives one of her "I'm slightly drunk" smiles with glazed-over eyes. Seriously, is she the new Paula?...

American Idol wants a female winner worse than Simon Cowell wants you to believe in the steroid-induced relevance of The X Factor: USA. It wants a female winner more desperately than Randy Jackson needs to repeat his fifth-grade vocabulary lessons. It wants a Kelly Clarkson-Fantasia Barrino-Carrie Underwood-Jordin Sparks “I Believe This Is My Moment in Heaven” moment with the burning intensity of Jennifer Lopez’s jealousy listening to the dulcet tones of Haley Reinhart. The American Idol judges handed out golden tickets to 162 female hopefuls and tonight they descend on Hollywood. Hearts will be broken. Dreams will be crushed. Hopes will be shattered.
And that's just in the previews.

It couldn't last forever. Last week's amazing streak of quality Golden Ticket holders on American Idol (which included a questionably self-satisfied Anthony Perkins doppelganger named Paul Jolley) was bound to hit a few bumps, and on Wednesday night's episode featuring auditions in San Antonio and Long Beach, we heard more than our share of underqualified, overannoying singers who were let through anyway. But forget about them. All of them. Well -- except for one of them.
A gorgeous weirdo named Papa Peachez emerged at some point to sing a song he penned himself. The song? Is awful. His voice? Is not nearly good enough for Hollywood. But Nicki Minaj praised his wackiness because she, too, has thought about renaming herself after fruit, and now he's on the road to stardom. I normally wouldn't bring up such a dazed, kooky gent, but listen to the lyrics of his ditty and tell...

Nicki Minaj would prefer to go down with the ship than to walk down the Queen Mary's gangplank in her enormous platform heels. At least that's the impression we got when the fire alarm went off and Nicki just sat there rolling her eyes until Nigel Lythgoe himself told her to scoot.
The excitement all started when 16-year old Jesaiah Baer started singing Kimbra's "Settle Down" and the docked cruise ship's fire alarm went off, forcing the logistical nightmare of a mandatory evacuation of a thousand American Idol hopefuls, and Nicki.

American Idol doesn’t get everything right all the time, but let’s give the lumbering old beast a round of applause — or as J.Lo likes to call it, a standing ovation — for trimming back the Season 12 auditions to a succinct, three-week affair.
If I’m being completely honest, the sometimes uninspiring Golden Ticket recipients from tonight’s two-city, two-hour extravaganza had me wondering if maybe Nigel Lythgoe & Co. should’ve considered additional cuts. But ultimately, the episode was not without its charms: “The great Randy Jackson” ridiculing Shubha Vedula’s name in front of a national TV audience...
