- Received a tribute from Dartmouth University on January 11, 1985 for his contributions to the movie industry, cinema history, and film preservation.
- Turell was founder of the prestigious Sterling Films (later Walter-Reade-Sterling) and became President of Janus Films in 1965. Turell was a pioneer in helping to distribute classic American and foreign films and helped revive interest in silent film classics with his vast collection through the landmark 1960 TV series, "Silents, Please.".
