Politician. He began his political career with election to the Lowell,
Massachusetts, City Council and later served as a Middlesex County
commissioner before winning a seat in the House and later the U.S.
Senate.

He was the leading rival to Bill Clinton for the Democratic nomination
in the 1992 election. Bill Clinton defeated him in the primaries, and
went on to win the election.
