Catch new photos from The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, starring Skylan Brooks, Ethan Dizon, Anthony Mackie, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jennifer Hudson, Jeffrey Wright, Jordin Sparks, Julito McCullum and Adam Trese. Admitedly, I'd never heard of this one, which is quite surprising considering the intriguing title. George Tillman Jr. is quite picky about his projects, having just 6 times at the helm from 1995 until now. So you know, this project must have attracted him very strongly. He's known for films like strong films like Soul Food, Men of Honor, Notorious and Faster, and now directs from the script by Michael Starrbury.

Chicago – “Silent House” inspires the same strange mixture of feelings that I felt while watching fascinating yet severely flawed pictures like “The Life Aquatic” or “I Heart Huckabees.” My rational mind recognizes that the film doesn’t quite work, and yet my inner cinephile urges me to recommend it anyway. Here’s a movie that’s nearly worth seeing in spite of itself.
The directing team of Chris Kentis and Laura Lau made an enormous impression on horror fans with their 2003 indie hit, “Open Water,” which remains one of the scariest films of the last decade. For the majority of its running time, the film centered on the bobbing heads of a couple hopelessly stranded in the middle of shark-infested waters. By following the premise to its logical conclusion, the film refused to loosen its grip on viewers’ imaginations, while masterfully playing on their most primal fears.

Directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau (Open Water) return to the horror genre for another unique spin on a rather basic story. Silent House is a one take horror film, which uses lengthy shots and low lighting to capture the fear and suspense of a creepy house. Elizabeth Olsen takes the solo lead role and attempts to grab your attention for a little under an hour and a half, but eventually her screams and panting wears off and Silent House‘s true colors are revealed. It’s just another disappointing horror film with an interesting premise, great actress, but no story and a twist ending that ruins everything before it.
Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen), her father (Adam Trese) and her uncle (Eric Sheffer Stevens) are gathering up a few things and working on their lakeside home out in the middle of nowhere. Certain eerie events lead to Sarah getting trapped inside the house,...

*here be major spoilers. Director: Chris Kentis and Laura Lau. Writers: Gustavo Hernández, and Laura Lau. Cast: Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, Julia Taylor Ross, and Adam Barnett. Married couple, Chris Kenis and Laura Lau, return from their thriller Open Water (2004) with another terrifying movie, Silent House. Silent House is a North American remake of Gustavo Hernandez's Uruguayan film La Casa Muda (2010). Both films incorporate long takes into their narrative. Some scenes last for longer than ten minutes. During each take, actress Elizabeth Olsen delivers an astounding peformance as Sarah, a young woman who must confront a tortured past. That tortured past is going to revealed here along with some of the pseudo-psychological aspects of the film. Sarah experiences memory loss: "I think I have holes up here (pointing to her head)." Her memory loss has been caused by years of repression. Also, her conversation partner is a figment of her imagination,...

Although it slightly runs off the rails by the end, Silent House manages to provide a few scares thanks to the intense performance of Elizabeth Olsen, tight camera angles and a brilliant use of bare bones lighting. In 2010, a small budget Spanish language horror film from Uruguay appeared called La Casa Muda. Directed by Gustavo Hernandez, it was supposedly shot in one take (this fact came into dispute soon after it's release), and followed, in real time, a girl who is stalked through an abandoned cottage by an unknown assailant. It was praised for it's originality, technical achievements, and ability to to create some genuinely scary moments. With all this praise it was inevitable that Hollywood would come calling with a remake. But as has been the case with recent english language remakes, it is quite good. Silent House is the story of Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen), a young woman fixing up an old family home for sale with her father (Adam Trese) and Uncle (Eric Sheffer Stevens). When her and her father go to investigate strange noise in the house, they become victims of a terrifying home invasion.

Remaking a revered foreign film is a thankless, usually insurmountable task. But what if the original film is not all that good to begin with? The Silent House, a Uruguayan horror from 2010, was distinguished largely for its admittedly impressive single-take gimmick, filmed on a Canon 5D as one apparently continuous 78-minute sequence (a spurious claim under scrutiny, though). Much like the source material, this low-fi Hollywood remake, Silent House, is a technically impressive feat – and better-acted for sure – but let down by a dearth of scares and uneven pace.
Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen) is staying at a lakeside vacation home with her father, John (Adam Trese) and uncle Peter (Eric Sheffer Stevens), and they are fixing it up for sale. It has no electricity, and has been set upon by vandals constantly; thus it isn’t much of a surprise when the house is invaded by a gang of intruders,...

It’s odd that the CinemaScore rating for Silent House, a more than decent gimmicky scare picture that opened last Friday, is an “F” — suggesting that critics like me are more excited by formal inventiveness than most of the film-going public. The gimmick here is that the camera follows the main character, Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen), for the entirety of the film, beginning with a striking descent as she sits on a rock staring pensively at the water and finishing … I’m not saying just yet. There are a few discreet edits in what follows but as Sarah helps her father (Adam Trese) and uncle (Eric Sheffer Stevens) clean their old summer house (mysteriously without power or light) and prepare it for sale, the takes go on and on, with no time for Olsen — or the audience — to decompress, exhale. We’re essentially marooned with the girl as the creaks...

If you needed any more evidence as to just what an acting talent Elizabeth Olsen is, take a trip to Silent House...
Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen) is returning to the house where she spent her summers growing up for the first time in years. She's in the company of her father John (Adam Trese) and her Uncle Peter (Eric Sheffer Stevens). The three of them are in the process of cleaning out and refurbishing the long-forgotten old place in an attempt to sell it and get a little money out of it, since nobody in the family really uses it anymore. The house is in pretty bad shape, so the refurb has been taking longer than expected.
However, Sarah's not long for this work. She's just going to be there a few days to pack up some of her things from childhood, and then she'll be moving on with her life.

Based on the Uruguyan film La Casa Muda, directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau take viewers on a journey through the inner psyche of a tortured young woman named Sarah who finds herself trapped alongside her family in an abandoned home in Silent House.

Silent House, directed by Chris Kentis (Open Water) and Laura Lau, is an American remake of a Uruguayan film that sets its premise around the notion that the film is done all in one take. I have not seen the Uruguayan film and therefore will not be commenting on how the films compare/contrast. I went into Silent House with little knowledge of the story and I was anticipating a competent experience. Part of that competence I expected from Elizabeth Olsen who has gotten attention lately for her role in Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene. Olsen did turn out to be one of the better aspects of the film but she became lost in other issues the film had. Silent House is fantastic with its “one-take” premise, but poor writing and a horrible payoff make this film avoidable.

John Carter: Willem Dafoe as Tars Tarkas (center), Taylor Kitsch As reported earlier today, John Carter earned a paltry $500,000 at Thursday midnight screenings in North America despite recent ads comparing the Andrew Stanton sci-fier to George Lucas' Star Wars and James Cameron's Avatar. Things haven't gotten much better since. As per Deadline.com, John Carter is expected to collect slightly less than $10 million at 3,749 North American locations, including 290 IMAX houses, on Friday. The film's weekend box-office take is expected to reach (a 3D/IMAX-inflated) $28 million — or about $5 million less than the maximum amount predicted based on early Friday showings. To say that's bad news for Disney would be a major understatement. Starring Taylor Kitsch in the title role, John Carter cost Disney a reported $250 million, in addition to millions more spent on marketing. In other words: Disney may have in its hands another box-office disaster not unlike last year's Mars Needs Moms.

John Carter movie: Taylor Kitsch & pal John Carter earned a relatively meager $500,000 at Thursday midnight screenings in the United States despite recent ads comparing it to George Lucas' Star Wars and James Cameron's Avatar. In France, it had the sixth biggest opening day of the year, smack between the Clint Eastwood / Leonardo DiCaprio biopic J. Edgar and the Josh Hutcherson / Dwayne Johnson / Vanessa Hudgens fantasy/adventure Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. And earlier today, Deadline.com reported that John Carter looks poised to collect only $9.5-$11 million at 3,749 North American locations, including 290 IMAX houses, on Friday, and at most (a 3D/IMAX-inflated) $33 million for the weekend. Directed by Andrew Stanton and starring Taylor Kitsch in the title role, John Carter cost Disney a reported $250 million. Not to mention millions more spent on marketing. In other words: Disney may have in its hands another box-office cataclysm not unlike last year's Mars Needs Moms.

A gimmicky horror film from Chris Kentis and Laura Lau (Open Water), Silent House keeps you engaged until that timeless genre staple, the moronic plot twist, takes the movie to a weird, sinister places and saps the fun out of it. Of course, that makes it hard to review the picture, which depends so heavily on that third act reveal. The first hour-plus is pretty gripping, a real-time single-take (undoubtedly including disguised cuts) depiction of a young woman named Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen) being tormented by mysterious stalkers inside a lakeside home she and her father (Adam Trese) are restoring. It’s a creepy place, with the windows boarded up, the doors locked and the power shut off. Cell phones don’t work and there are no neighbors. The filmmakers, remaking a 2010 Uruguayan movie, play up the closed-off quality by setting the action during the late afternoon, with the sun first setting outdoors. The...

Chicago – Elizabeth Olsen does her damned best to save “Silent House” from itself but this quasi-thriller collapses under the weight of a script that just doesn’t work. It’s one of those horror movies with no internal logic and camera tricks as ways to heighten tension instead of anything that feels remotely genuine. The trip through “Silent House” starts promisingly but you’ll be running for the doors before it ends.
The trick behind “Silent House” is a relatively clever one. The story is told in one take, never leaving the location of its female protagonist, a clearly troubled girl named Sarah (Olsen) who is helping pack up an old house with her father John (Adam Trese) and her uncle Peter (Eric Sheffer Stevens). There are some obvious cuts (like when it gets pitch black, door transitions, or running scenes) but the film is an impressive technical accomplishment...

Directors: Chris Kentis, Laura Lau Writers: Gustavo Hernández (based on the film by), Laura Lau (screenplay) Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, Julia Taylor Ross Single-take films are a rarity, probably both because of the obvious challenges involved in making them and because there aren't many stories that work well in that format. The most famous single-take film is probably Alfred Hitchcock's 1948 classic Rope. Based on the Uruguayan horror film La Casa Muda, also a single-take film, Silent House looks every bit the part of an uninterrupted 88 minute shot although I sense that it's not (and I've read that the final 15 minutes were re-filmed after the film's Sundance premiere). I'm sure there are several splices and cuts hidden in there but directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau masterfully manage to keep them well disguised. If you've seen the trailer or heard about Silent House, you probably have...

Pro-tip: if your family owns a summer house that hasn't been used since your early childhood, probably best to hire someone else to renovate and sell it. If you return to this home, chances are extremely high that you'll be the victim of an uninterrupted horror sequence that works out well for approximately no one.
Welcome to "Silent House," the Elizabeth Olsen starring thriller hitting theaters today (March 9). Olsen takes the lead as Sarah, a young woman working with her father (Adam Trese) and uncle (Eric Sheffer Stevens) to patch up their old vacation house before putting it on the market. But one fateful evening in the all-but-abandoned home leads Sarah to realize that the house isn't so silent after all, and that some terrors are truly inescapable.

Silent House Directed by Chris Kentis and Laura Lau Written by Laura Lau (screenplay) Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese and Eric Sheffer Stevens Horror fans will find themselves in a familiar position when they watch Silent House, a film that does an excellent job building tension and dread, but ultimately succumbs to an unsatisfying ending that cheapens the overall experience. Why do so many horror films fall apart in the last ten minutes? It’s frustrating to experience the exhilaration of a well-executed tale of creeping dread, only to watch your well-earned admiration dissolve when the movie takes an easy out. Such is the case with Silent House, a film I will still give an enthusiastic recommendation to, because when it is good, it is very good. I’m an adamant fan of the horror genre, and sometimes, I take my scares where I can get them. Silent House is...

Silent House is a remake of the 2010 Spanish-language flick that gained notoriety for its unique delivery approach: real-time. Yep, the entire 85 minutes are captured in one continuous take by a single camera. And the American version is doing the same exact thing.

Film: Silent House (2011) Cast includes: Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Adam Trese (Zodiac), Eric Sheffer Stevens (Julie & Julia) Directors: Chris Kentis (Open Water), Laura Lau (Open Water) Genre: Horror (85 minutes) It's a beautiful shoreline area, and Sarah waits outside while her dad, John, runs errands. "I hit the internet café ... answered email ... checked your Facebook page," he tells her when he returns. "What's His Name wrote on your wall again. I think he wants to get back together... Princess, he doesn't deserve you." Uncle Peter's in the house, and he's got something to show John. The house needs a lot of work if the brothers are going to get it in shape to sell. It's been years since they were here ... vandals, rats and neglect have taken a toll. Peter documents the damage with Polaroid snapshots. When John and Peter go to check the basement, they take lanterns because the electricity's out.

Elizabeth Olsen was out in NYC last night for the premiere of her new film Silent House at the AMC Loews theater at Lincoln Square. She spoke with reporters on the red carpet and also posed for photos alongside the movie's directors Laura Lau and Chris Kentis, as well as her costars Eric Sheffer Stevens and Adam Trese. The group celebrated together following the screening at the Stone Rose Lounge. The evening was Elizabeth's latest outing in the Big Apple. "Silent House" has a nifty hook – it's being billed as a "real time" (probably not) horror movie filled in a single, unified shot (again: there are eight separate shots, but that's still pretty impressive). In a way it's a stylish extension of the current found footage craze, as we're locked into a single character (played, with believable intensity, by Elizabeth Olsen) as she scurries around a dilapidated lake house, but it also allows for far more flowery filmmaking (particularly in the film's freaky final act). What makes "Silent House" such an exceptional little genre treat is that, locked into a very rigid technical framework, filmmakers Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, have gone out of their way to make a genuinely scary, occasionally surreal, intensely imaginative thriller. What could have simply been an exercise ends up being truly engaging.

The English-language remake of Silent House is based on the original ultra-low-budget La Casa Muda, an Uruguayan horror from 2010.
Chris Kentiss and Laura Lau, the filmmakers behind the 2004 shark thriller Open Water, were directors-for-hire on the remake, which purports to be all one long continuous shot, à la Hitchcock’s Rope.
It isn’t. By the filmmakers' own admission, the film was shot much the same as any movie, scene by scene, and is only edited together to give the illusion that it’s all one long uninterrupted hour and a half. Because this film takes place in one house with one main character over the course of one hour and a half, there are a lot...

Motion posters are few and far between but their rarity makes it that much cooler when a studio decides to go with movement and sound to promote a movie and when it comes to thriller Silent House, the results will raise the hair on the back of your neck.
This American remake of a 2010 Spanish-language movie set in Uruguay is based on a true story, and, impressively, filmed in one 88-minute-long take. Directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau are the ones recreating the chilling tale of a father (Adam Trese) and daughter (Elizabeth Olsen) who visit the family's lakeside retreat only to find themselves the victims of terror when it's clear they aren't alone in the house.
A moving poster for the movie has just been released and shows our favourite Olsen experiencing some of that "real fear" mentioned in the movie's tagline.
Check it out after the jump.
