FX has opted not to move forward with Belated, Peter Tolan’s comedy pilot starring Kal Penn, Deadline has confirmed.
Tolan, co-creator of FX’s Rescue Me, wrote, directed and executive produced the semi-autobiographical pilot, with Nick Alford of Cloudland also executive producing for FX Productions.
In addition to Penn, cast included Ellie Taylor, Kaden Kearney, Amir Bageria and EaeMya ThynGi.
The half-hour comedy followed an unexpected intergenerational friendship between Sachin (Penn), a recently out man in his 40s, and Clay (Kearney), a 17-year-old trans teen, as Sachin and his ex-wife (Taylor) and children (Bageria and ThynGi) attempted to find their new normal.
FX still two other comedy pilots in the works — English Teacher from Brian Jordan Alvarez, who also stars, and Paul Simms; and an untitled half-hour from Lauren Ludwig (American Auto). English Teacher is a comedy about gay high school English teacher Evan (Alvarez) and his fellow teachers...

The comedy pilot “Belated” from creator Peter Tolan and starring Kal Penn is not moving forward at FX, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
The half-hour series was meant to follow an unexpected intergenerational friendship between Sachin (Penn), a recently out man in his 40s, and Clay (Kaden Kearney), a 17-year-old trans teen, as Sachin and his ex-wife and children attempt to find their new normal. Along with Penn and Kearney, the pilot starred Ellie Taylor, Amir Bageria, and EaeMya ThynGi.
FX did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.
Tolan wrote, directed, and executive produced the “Belated” pilot. Nick Alford of Cloudland also executive produced. FX Productions was the studio. Variety exclusively reported the pilot had been set up at the basic cabler back in October 2021.
The pilot would have brought Tolan back into the FX fold. He previously co-created the hit FX series “Rescue Me” with Denis Leary.

Denis Leary is joining the “Law & Order: Organized Crime” family in a recurring role, TheWrap has confirmed.
The actor is set to play Frank Donnelly, of the NYPD. His character will interact with Det. Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), with Leary’s debut episode airing March 3.
The Leary casting comes a little over a week after the news that Dylan McDermott is leaving “Organized Crime,” (he’s played baddie/mob boss Richard Wheatley) and heading to another Dick Wolf series — “FBI: Most Wanted” on CBS — as Julian McMahon exits that program March 17.
Leary played Tommy Gavin, a New York City firefighter, across seven seasons of the FX series “Rescue Me,” which he created alongside executive producer Peter Tolan. He was nominated twice for lead actor at the Emmys for his role, and once for writing.
Most recently, he starred in “The Moodys” on Fox.

Exclusive: Kal Penn has signed on to produce and star in Stampede Ventures’ biopic Superfan, which will tell the story of Nav Bhatia, a decades long follower of the Toronto Raptors, who last year became the first fan inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame. When director David Dobkin brought the 2005 comedy “Wedding Crashers” to the marketing team at New Line Cinema, he didn’t get the reception he thought he would. Marketing head Russell Schwartz thought that Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson’s characters were too misogynistic, since their main aim seemed to be crashing weddings to look for girls.
Dobkin pushed back. He saw it a different way: The pair loved weddings and were the life of the party. When the film came out on July 15, 2000, “Wedding Crashers” became the first R-rated comedy to break $200 million at the domestic box office.
“Wedding Crashers” follows Jeremy Grey and John Beckwith — played by Vaughn and Wilson, respectively — two divorce attorneys who spend their free time sneaking into weddings in hopes of meeting eligible women. When they see that the Secretary of the Treasury Cleary (Christopher Walken) is celebrating his son’s marriage, the two crash...

Hollywood is a hell of a drug. To some, knowing that they walk the same streets as legitimately famous people who grace the covers of magazines and walk the red carpets and can be regularly seen on the big (or small) screen is intoxicating. For those people, nothing can dissuade them from chasing the facade of fame down whatever rabbit hole; anything to bask in the proximity of celebrity for a little while.

In a twist befitting its distributor’s limited audience, Spectrum’s “Mad About You” revival only works if you really want to see it. Picking up two years before the original NBC series finale’s flash-forward ending, the new episodes rewrite history a little bit: Paul (Paul Reiser) and Jamie (Helen Hunt) are still married, and their only daughter, Mabel (Abby Quinn), is leaving for college when the limited series starts up. In the finale, she was a full-grown adult filmmaker by 2021, not a junior at NYU. By then, her parents had separated, and she devised a scheme to bring them back together.
The revival’s showrunner and head writer, Peter Tolan, has said they’re pretending like the flashforward from the last NBC episode “didn’t happen.” But arguably the only way the revived “Mad About You” proves worthwhile is if viewers believe the new episodes are headed to that preset destination: Splitsville,...

“Will & Grace,” “Roseanne,” “Murphy Brown” and now “Mad About You.” The list of multicamera revivals is only continuing to grow, although unlike the first three on this list, “Mad About You’s” return will be for Spectrum, rather than its original home, NBC.
But the network is one of few things that has changed. The series reunites original stars Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser as Jamie and Paul Buchman, respectively, a married couple living in New York City. Original series regulars such as Anne Ramsay, Richard Kind and Jerry Adler will also appear in the new batch of 12 episodes. The production team painstakingly recreated the Buchmans’ apartment, and the key to the storytelling will be the relationship tension, according to Hunt.

Mad About You was one of my very favorite shows when it was on, and especially in the years after, while it was still highly syndicated. I was a pretty young kid when I watched it, but I loved the dynamic between Paul (Paul Reiser) and Jamie (Helen Hunt), and was so in love with the fun couple who lived in New York with their dog, Murray, and watched movies and had a fun and humorous relationship. I have always loved Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt separately throughout their careers, and I felt like this show was just magic. With all that being said, I also have to say I Hated the series finale. It made me so mad and sad that I just ignored the ending in my brain.

The long-in-the-works Mad About You revival with original stars Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt has found a home. Charter Communications’ premium content platform, Spectrum Originals, has picked up the new Mad About You to air as a limited series. The half-hour comedy, from showrunner Peter Tolan and Sony Pictures Television, is slated for a late 2019 launch.
Hunt will direct the first episode of the revival, with Danny Jacobson, who co-created the original series with Reiser, serving as an executive consultant.
The pickup by Spectrum Originals comes almost a year after the revival of the hit 1990 sitcom came together at Sony TV, with Reiser and Hunt closing deals to reprise their roles as Paul and Jamie Buchman and Tolan coming on board to steer the project. The Mad About You followup was taken out to buyers last spring. There was interest and production commitment offers but I hear the talent and...

Don’t dismiss TV’s waning reboot craze just yet. More than a year after talks first started, Mad About You is officially the next in line to get a reunion run — only, instead of original network NBC, the sitcom is being revived by Charter’s fledgling Spectrum Originals.
Both Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt are set to reprise the roles of Paul and Jamie Buchman, while Peter Tolan joins as showrunner. Hunt is also set to direct the first episode back, which is scheduled to launch on Spectrum later this year. The run is being billed as a limited ...

Helen Hunt is confident that a reboot of classic 1990s comedy Mad About You will happen but told Deadline she’s “resigned from handicapping when.”
This comes six months after her co-star Paul Reiser, who created the NBC comedy with Danny Jacobson, claimed he was not optimistic about the revival’s chances.
Hunt said that there had been “zero” developments since 2018, when the project looked to be picking up steam. Sony Pictures Television had tapped top comedy showrunner Peter Tolan to write and showrun the revival, and Hunt and Reiser were closing deals to reprise their roles.
She said, “We’re right where we were. It’s not not going to happen and it’s not set. The news is that nothing has moved in one year. It’s a little bit frustrating. I am rooting for it. I sort of think it will [happen], but I’m sort of resigned from handicapping when or if.
