"Stand and deliver, sir!" Dennis Hopper in Philippe Mora's Mad Dog Morgan.
Philippe Mora: Ballad Of A Mad Dog
By
Alex Simon
Born in Paris in 1949, Philippe Mora is a member of one of Australia’s best known artistic families. His parents, Georges Mora and Mirka Mora, migrated to Australia from France in 1951 and settled in Melbourne, where they quickly became key figures on the Melbourne cultural scene. Georges, a wartime resistance fighter, became an influential art dealer, and in 1967 he founded one of the first commercial art galleries in Melbourne, Tolarno Galleries. The Mora family home and restaurants were focal points of Melbourne's bohemian subculture. As a result of this, Philippe and his brothers had what he has described as a "culturally privileged childhood."
Philippe moved to London in late 1967 to pursue painting and filmmaking. He was one of many important Australian artists, writers and others who »

Today we have the trailer for “Creation” a biopic movie telling the life of Charles Darwin.
From director Jon Amiel (The Singing Detective, Entrapment) and writer John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) comes “Creation”. A psychological, heart-wrenching love story starring Paul Bettany (A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) as Charles Darwin, the film is based on “Annie’s Box,” a biography penned by Darwin’s great-great-grandson Randal Keynes using personal letters and diaries of the Darwin family. We take a unique and inside look at Darwin, his family and his love for his deeply religious wife, played by Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream), as, torn between faith and science, Darwin struggles to finish his legendary book “On the Origin of Species,” which goes on to become the foundation for evolutionary biology.

Creation is the partly biographical, part fictional account of scientist Charles Darwin's relationship with his eldest daughter 'Annie', as the author struggled to document his evolutionary theories in the book On the Origin of Species. Produced by Jeremy Thomas, the film was directed by Jon Amiel, starring actors Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as 'Charles' and 'Emma Darwin'. Screenplay is by John Collee, adapting author Randal Keynes's biography of Darwin titled Annie's Box. The film had its world premiere September 10, 2009 at the Toronto International Film Festival as the opening night Gala Presentation. According to producer Thomas, the Us was one of the last countries to find a distributor due to the prominence of the ongoing 'creation' vs. 'evolution' controversy. Newmarket Films (The Passion Of Christ), eventually acquired distribution rights to the Icon film with plans to release it December 2009. In Canada, D Films will release Creation January 22, 2010. In the dark days following the death of Heath Ledger, Terry Gilliam was grieving the loss of a close friend and couldn't bring himself even to contemplate what would happen to the film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, that they had both been working on when the young Australian actor sadly passed on.
"It was a terrible time," he says. "And frankly I was just devastated by the loss of such a great guy. The film didn't really come into it at that point."
But gradually, encouraged by his collaborators including his daughter, Amy Gilliam, who is a producer on the film, he began to accept that finishing it would be a fitting tribute to Heath even though, at first, he couldn't see how they could do it. Ledger died in January 2008 with the British end of the production completed but with weeks of shooting still planned on sound stages in Canada. »

Film Independent's Filmmaker Forum is underway this weekend, and we asked writer/director Zak Forsman to attend and report back. Here's the first of his posts. I’ve just locked picture on my first feature-length motion picture and it seems I couldn’t be entering the world of distribution at a worse time. I strolled into the DGA in Los Angeles for day one of the Film Independent Filmmaker Forum optimistic and eager. I left it determined to batten down the hatches in preparation for stormy seas ahead. Veteran producer Jeremy Thomas (Creation, The Last Emperor, Crash) keynote opened with the concession that these are tough times for filmmakers making art house cinema for “sentient human beings,” as he put it. While he rejected the »

The Charles Darwin documentary Creation was selected to open this year's Toronto Film Festival, probably on the starpower of Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, who star in the film and were instrumental in getting it made. And I've gotta be honest, the response wasn't great. My twitter feed was packed with journalists claiming to have walked out halfway through of boredom, or stuck around only to not be rewarded for the effort. Variety had only tepid praise for the film, and predicted it as a "medium" specialty performer. But of course, the film's producers won't admit that anything could possibly be wrong with their movie, so they're blaming creationists instead. In the British newspaper The Telegraph, Creation producer Jeremy Thomas seemed outraged when he said "The film has no distributor in America. It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the Us, and it's because of »

A biopic about the father of evolutionary theory, Charles Darwin, may never be seen in the Us. Too shocking for American fundies? This is the theory posited by Jeremy Thomas, the movie producer, who was also behind many excellent Bernardo Bertolucci films, such as "Dreamers", "Stealing Beauty" and "The Last Emperor". "Creation" tells the story of the father of evolutionary theory, his struggle to find a balance between faith and reason, and his crushing depression at the death of this 10-year-old daughter in 1851. With the rights to the movie purchased by several distributors, "Creation" will premiere in the next several months around the world except in the Us, despite rave reviews from the American film press. For several decades now, Charles Darwin's scientific theories - which say that man was not created by God, but rather evolved through natural selection - have come under increasing fire from those promoting "creation »

So let's see if I've got this straight: We can have movies about serial killers about once a month, and we can have movies that glorify violence, drug use, and general debauched behavior, and America doesn't even shrug. But a movie about Charles Darwin is just beyond the pale.
The Toronto Film Festival entry, oddly titled Creation, stars Paul Bettany as the noted naturalist and father of the evolutionary theory, and according to The Telegraph, Us distributors aren't anxious to pick up rights to the film.
"The film has no distributor in America," confesses producer Jeremy Thomas. "It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the Us, and it's because of what the film is about. People have been saying this is the best film they've seen all year, yet nobody in the Us has picked it up." »

Long after his death, Charles Darwin continues to stir up fuss over his landmark theories of evolution, and the producers of Tiff Opening Night Film Creation are clearly hoping to milk said fuss for all the Stateside distribution it's worth.
The Telegraph of the UK has producer Jeremy Thomas on the record as saying, "It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the Us, and it's because of what the film is about." He then cites early rave reviews, including anonymous word-of-mouth calling it "the best film they've seen all year", the Hollywood Reporter's positive reaction and the Telegraph's own 300-word review -- accessible through the sponsored page of content linked within the article.
But many critics have simply found the film to be too much of a bore to merit controversy. The A.V. Club's Noel Murray said, "for the most part Creation is Biopic 101, earnest and over-explained. »

The reason why film festivals pick movies like Creation for opening night is that they have all the right credentials: respected producer (Jeremy Thomas) and director (Jon Amiel) and two major stars (Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly) willing to show up for the gala Tiff screenings and party. But Creation was Doa tonight. Flat, dull, and painful to sit through, Creation brings none of the excitement, energy and radical thought that … »

Hnr's Michael Stevens reporting from Toronto... Director Jon Amiel's newest feature Creation, a film about radical evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin, will open the 34th Toronto Film Festival, Sept. 10. "This intimate look at Darwin puts a human face on a man whose theory remains controversial to this day," said Tiff director/CEO Piers Handling. Produced by Jeremy Thomas, the bio-pic stars actor Paul "Gangster One" Bettany as the English author of "The Origin of Species", with Jennifer "A Beautiful Mind" Connelly playing his wife 'Emma'. The screenplay by John Collee adapts the book "Annie's Box," written by Darwin's great-great-grandson Randal Keynes. The film was developed by the Recorded Picture Co., BBC Films and the UK Film Council. This year's Tiff has so far announced three galas and 19 special presentations. Galas include Aaron Schneider's Get Low, starring actors Robert Duvall, Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek, the biopic Max Manus, focusing »
