Ma Hsin Yi was an eminent officer and a military general of the late Qing Dynasty who, together with other prominent officers, formed the Green Standard Army to fight against the rebels during the Taiping Rebellion. Chang Cheh's “The Blood Brothers” is an epic historical drama retelling his assassination by his officer and sworn brother Chang Wein Hsiang, played by David Chiang. Ti Lung's incredible portrayal of Ma won him the Special Award for Outstanding Performance at the 11th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan and Best Actor Award at the Asia Pacific Film Festival.

Before he became one of Shaw Brothers’ foremost fight choreographers, Lau Kar Leung used to work as an extra besides choreographing the old black and white Wong Fei Hung series. Together with fellow choreographer Tang Chia, he would spend many years working for director Chang Cheh until they had a fallout while doing “Marco Polo”. So it was only natural that he would eventually evolve into a director during the early 70s when the martial arts films were in full swing. Furthermore, after Shaw Brothers Studio stopped making films, he would continue to choreograph, direct and even act in films like “Drunken Master II” with Jackie Chan and Tsui Hark’s “Seven Swords” in 2005.

Best known for his novels, film producer, screenwriter and novelist Xiong Yao Hua (pen name Gu Long) wrote “Xiao Li Fei Dao” (“Little Li Flying Dagger”), a wuxia series consisting of five novels from 1968 to 1981. This film is an adaptation of the second novel “The Bordertown Wanderer” in which two swordsmen team up to investigate the murder case of a legendary swordsman, Bai Tian Yu. Apparently it is the 20th anniversary of his death and his son is showing up to settle the old score with the remaining surviving seven murderers.

Li Xun Huan, the sick gentleman of jianghu, the martial arts world, returns with yet another adventure full of intrigue and bloodshed. Widely claimed as the 100th film directed by Chor Yuen, this straight continuation of “The Sentimental Swordsman” (1977) with most of the original cast returning though some playing different roles, did even better at the box office than its predecessor.

Hardly a stranger in the wuxia films universe, Chor Yuen from the Shaw Brothers Studio is renowned for his adaptations of Ku Lung’s swordplay wuxia novels onto the big screen, starting with “Killer Clans” in 1976 that ultimately made him well known internationally. “Clans of Intrigue”, adapted from “Fragrance in the Sea of Blood” is one of five such films the prolific director released in 1977.

Starting with “The Flying Guillotine” back in 1975, director Ho unleashed his deadly decapitating machine on the big screen and started a trend. But he was too busy doing other horror projects like “Black Magic”, “Oily Maniac” and “The Mighty Peking Man” that he was not able to do the official follow-up. Even so with “The Dragon Missile” (1976), he did manage to do a quick knock off version while other directors and actors were finishing off the troublesome sequel. Interestingly, when it finally came out in 1978, Ho also released the concluding chapter concerning the flying guillotine for the Shaw Brothers in the form of “The Vengeful Beauty” or “Bloody Hibiscus” as in the Chinese title.

Underneath all that flashy Shaw Brothers production standards, this was essentially a rushed and cashed in “B” grade road adventure drama from Ho Meng Hua. Released at the same time as Jimmy Wang Yu’s “Master of the Flying Guillotine” this was pretty much a knockoff of his own hit “The Flying Guillotine” (1975) starring Chen Kuan Tai. Nonetheless, it crashed at the box office during its short run while Jimmy’s guillotine clone won the hearts of many fans and attracted a cult following.

Back in 1975, Ho Meng Hua introduced his cool but deadly decapitating flying machine and caused a sensation. But the problematic official sequel didn’t really take off till 1978, a very long time for a follow-up. For a start, Ho was too busy with other projects like “Black Magic”, “The Mighty Peking Man” and “Vengeful Beauty”. Conversely, in 1976 both Chen Kuan Tai and Liu Wu Chi were keen to reprise their roles but Liu unexpectedly disappeared from the movie industry altogether but they quickly replaced her with Hsiao Yao.
Then in late 1967, leading man Chen abruptly left Shaw Brothers, and if that was not enough, Hsiao Yao also left the studio. At this point and not wanting to abandon the project, they signed up Ti Lung to take over Chen as Ma Teng and the role of his wife went to Chen Szu Chia. By this point a well-oiled machine, The Shaw Brothers studios operating out of Hong Kong had been pumping out swordplay and kung-fu films since the 1960s. A tradition going back centuries, countless stories of objects, most notably books and other dark tomes, have been claimed to be made of human skin, a practice that was reportedly accomplished by Ed Gein who made a lampshade of human skin. However, the real-life inspirations for such gruesome antics might not have been at the center of planning for this gruesome kung-fu/horror hybrid from the Shaw Brothers.

One of the most well-regarded choreographers of the day, Chia Tang has never caught on the way contemporaries Chang Cheh, Yuen Woo-ping or Liu Chia-liang have become luminaries in the style. Still, judging by this first directorial offering, he had enough to offer that should’ve kept his name in the genres’ upper echelon with this strong and highly enjoyable late-era Shaw Brothers effort.

The final film in Hammer's Dracula series is perhaps the least talked about, despite being the weirdest. By 1974, Hammer's star was fading. The seminal British studio struggled to keep up with the changing tastes of genre audiences and attempts to cram their gothic ghouls into modern film styles weren't working. While some experiments - like the campy Dracula Ad 1972 or Satanic Rites Of Dracula - have a certain cult appeal now, they were poorly received at the time and drove their star Christopher Lee to quit the franchise for good.
Not to be dissuaded, Hammer decided to inject new blood into the Dracula franchise one last time by cashing in on the latest cinematic craze – kung fu.

If you’re a fan of high definition video and martial-arts classics from Hong Kong’s famous Shaw Bros. studio, you didn’t have much luck to enjoy these two things together in the past. With Chia Tang’s Opium and the Kung Fu Master Bci Eclipse released only one title this January, but got shut down from the Navarre Corporation because of the financial situation before they could release the other announced title, Cheh Changs Life Gamble.
But now Amazon.com lists a Blu-ray Disc release of probably the most famous film coming from the studio, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin starring Gordon Liu for March 2, 2010! The product detail on the site mention Videnvdi Entertainment as the distributing studio, but since Vivendi had joined forces with the Weinstein Company for the home video market in September, this disc will probably be released (like the DVD) under the Dragon Dynasty label.
