The saying “90 percent of directing is casting” has been attributed to everyone from John Ford to Robert Altman to Martin Scorsese, but in the case of Netflix’s much-buzzed-about romantic political drama “The Diplomat,” you might even be able to crank that number to 95, especially as casting director Julie Schubert tells it, getting your first-choice leads is the ultimate Hail Mary pass.
“Keri Russell was on the very first list,” says Schubert, who can barely contain her enthusiasm for the versatile actress. “She is truly one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet in your entire life. And one of the hardest working people you will ever meet in your entire life. She’s top to bottom: pure joy.”
As written, Ambassador Kate Wyler checks a lot of boxes for Russell’s abilities, but for the role of Kate’s roguish, charismatic, upward climbing husband-with-benefits Hal, there’s...

This year “Succession” swept the drama guest acting Emmy nominations, nabbing seven of the 12 available slots. I thought about that while watching “The Sandman” on Netflix. It’s a supernatural fantasy drama based on a comic book series by Neil Gaiman, the type of TV show that might not normally get on awards voters’ radar even in an era when genre shows like “Game of Thrones” and “Watchmen” collect trophies left and right. Sure the sterling crafts of “The Sandman” may be major players in the year to come, but allow me to make a case for the actors who already make a strong case for sweeping next year’s guest acting races. Greenlit means a project is officially a go, so all you have to do is follow these leads to stay up to date. You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “New Gods” The DC Extended Universe is extending even further. Warner Bros. announced last week that acclaimed director Ava DuVernay will be coming on board to direct the studio’s “New Gods,” based on the DC Comics series of the same name. The project will be the beginning of a new universe to build, and they’ve picked one of the buzziest people for the job. DuVernay, who most recently directed the much-anticipated “A Wrinkle In Time,” will join Patty Jenkins of last year’s “Wonder Woman” in the female superhero director category. Unless Warner Bros. wants to have a say in who gets to add cast to the new franchise, it's likely DuVernay...

Billy Magnussen, Navid Negahban, Numan Acar, and Nasim Pedrad will also appear in the adaptation of the 1992 animated film. Guy Ritchie is directing, John August wrote the script, and Lucinda Syson and Tess Joseph handled casting. Frequent British TV director Toby Haynes ("Sherlock," "Doctor Who," "Being Human") is reportedly in talks to direct a new film adaptation of Lionel Bart's classic musical "Oliver!" for Working Title and Sony Pictures.
The project, which will be greenlit in a matter of weeks once rights deals are completed, aims to start shooting on location in and around London early next year for a late 2016 release. The tone is said to be grittier than the original.

Famed choreographer-director Matthew Bourne previously indicated he was linked to the project but that's not certain anymore.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Casting directors are among the most powerful figures in showbusiness, able to make or break careers. But what exactly do they do? Laura Barnett talks auditions, callbacks – and tears
Up in his office on the sixth floor of the Palace theatre, in the heart of London's theatreland, Stephen Crockett is letting me in on a secretive world. The walls are lined with posters for hit shows he has worked on: from Chicago to almost every Andrew Lloyd Webber musical; from Mamma Mia! to Jerry Springer: The Opera. His desk is buried beneath piles of newspapers, CVs and headshots. But – showing me a photograph of performer Dianne Pilkington, just cast in Mamma Mia! – he assures me it's organised chaos. This is the mysterious world of the casting director.
They are rarely interviewed. Few people outside theatre, film and TV know who they are. Yet casting directors rank among the most influential operators in showbusiness.

It wouldn't be a day if there wasn't a new X-Men: First Class casting rumor, this time coming from the muchachos over at Latino Review regarding yet another non-original X-Men team member.
According to those always reliable "unnamed sources," it appears as though relative -- rather, make that totally unknown actor Caleb Landry Jones is getting some face time with X-Men: First Class casting agent Lucinda Syson for the role of Banshee. While X-fans are all too familiar with howlin' Irish mutant, Jones, on the other hand, is known as "the kid on the bike in No Country for Old Men," according to Latino Review. He's also had stints on Friday Night Lights and will has a role in the upcoming film The Last Exorcism.

With X-Men: First Class casting apparently underway, rumors are starting to heat up, as the production may have found their Mystique, and could Rosamund Pike -- who was rumored to be up for the role of Emma Frost -- now be trying out for Dr. Moira MacTaggert?
The rockstars over at The Playlist point out an article in Production Weekly magazine stating that the casting agents at 20th Century Fox have "strong interest" in casting Amber Heard as "a young Mystique" and Pike for the role of MacTaggert, Professor X's (played by James McAvoy) longtime confidant and special lady friend. Astute readers will recall that, last week, rumors were flying that Pike was up for the role of Frost -- a vastly different character than MacTaggart in the funnybooks -- based solely on the fact that she was seen walking into casting agent Lucinda Syson's office clutching a copy...

Rosamund Pike (Surrogates) is rumored to be in line to play the young Emma Frost in the 20th Century Fox film, X-Men: First Class. Forces of Geek sources spotted Ms. Pike around Lucinda Syson’s offices (Syson is the casting director who has previously worked with First Class director Matthew Vaughn on both Stardust and Kick-Ass), and Pike was allegedly carrying a copy of the comic book seen below.

Former Bond girl Rosamund Pike ("Die Another Day," "An Education," "Doom") is apparently a contender to play Emma Frost in Matthew Vaughn's "X-Men: First Class" reports Forces of Geek.
A source for the site reveals Pike was spotted at the offices of Lucinda Syson, the casting director for Matthew Vaughn's last two films, and was spotted carrying a Emma Frost comic book at the time.
The fictional telepathic character, also known as the White Queen, started out as the X-Men's most dangerous foes to one of its most central members.

You won't find much debate among X-fans that Emma Frost puts the "class" in X-Men: First Class, and if rumors are to be believed, we may be seeing a former Bond Girl strapping into the former White Queen's super-skimpy designer duds -- namely, Rosamund Pike.
The folks over at Forces of Geek have it on good authority that Pike -- who played Miranda Frost (what a coincidence!) in Die Another Day -- may be up for the role of the arrogant-yet-absurdly sexy reformed villain turned Xavier School instructor. The source notes that Pike was recently seen walking into X-Men: First Class casting agent Lucinda Syson's offices carrying a copy of the X-Men Origins: Emma Frost comic book, which is always a telling sign. It’s been a slow news week or at least, it’s felt like a really slow news week and it’s only Wednesday. Yikes. So, when things get slow, stories like these actually become a story of note. Either way, Forces Of Geek is reporting that Rosamund Pike walked out of a office with an X-Men comic book tucked under her arm and now we’re all assuming that she’s going to Emma Frost in X-Men: The First Class.
To be specific, the story cites that Pike left the office of Lucinda Syson, a casting director behind such recent films as Clash Of Titans, Ninja Assassin, and X-Men: The First Class director Matthew Vaughn’s last two films. While there could be some truth and weight to this story, let’s not assume it means anything regarding the casting and Rosamund Pike in the film.

We've got a couple more juicy casting rumours this week for the upcoming X-Men: First Class movie, which is slated to be directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass). Recently it was announced that James McAvoy had signed on to play a young Professor X [1] in the film, although that was called into question when word came out that Michael Fassbender (Hunger, Inglourious Basterds) was also supposedly up for the very same role. It turns out that there was a bit of a mix-up by Roger Friedman at Showbiz 411 [2], who later corrected himself to report that it is the role of young Magneto that Fassbender is actually being courted for. If this is true, it is a choice that makes a lot more sense than Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass), who was also being rumoured to play Magneto or possibly a young Cyclops. However, it seems that Fassbender may have a tough decision to make here,...

Another casting report from "X-Men: First Class" has surfaced. After Michael Fassbender is said to be wanted by director Matthew Vaughn to play Magneto, Rosamund Pike is rumored to take the role of Emma Frost in the same film.
According to Forces of Geek, the English beauty has been testing and could possibly be picked as the depicter of Frost aka White Queen. Additionally, a source told the site that Pike has been spotted around the office of Lucinda Syson, a casting director of Vaughn for "Kick-Ass" and "Stardust", while bringing a copy of "X-Men Origins: Emma Frost" with her.
Emma Frost is an urbane, mutant telepath with a well-noted dry wit. She first appeared in "X-Men" comic in 1980 and was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist/co-writer John Byrne. The younger version of the character has been previously portrayed by Tahyna Tozzi in 2009 feature film "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".
