“Outer Range,” the new Josh Brolin-led Western series from Prime Video, aims to twist the well-worn genre at its very roots. To showcase the land of the West in a never-before-seen fashion, the eight-episode series mixes in an element of the supernatural, with mind-bending results.
“It took a very simple, straight-forward genre and then it took extraordinary twists, whether it be metaphysical or whatever you want to call it,” Brolin told Variety at the show’s premiere at Hollywood’s Harmony Gold theater on Thursday night. “It’s uncertain because there are so many directions it can go, and a lot of them can feel really cliché. But I feel like we kept it grounded.”

Whatever you do, don’t put your hand down that epic hole in the pasture!
Prime Video today released the official trailer for Outer Range, a this-isn’t-another-Yellowstone neo-western that stars Josh Brolin as a Wyoming rancher “fighting for his land and family.” We know; that sounds a lot like a John Dutton problem. But this series features a supernatural element that, among other things, seems to rip off Brolin’s shirt at night.
Here’s the down low: “At the onset of the series, the Abbotts are coping with the disappearance of daughter-in-law Rebecca. They are pushed further to the brink when the Tillersons (the gaudy owners of the neighboring profit-driven ranch) make a play for their land. An untimely death in the community sets off a chain of tension-filled events, and seemingly small-town, soil-bound troubles come to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts’ west pasture.

The official, extended trailer for the new show was released today, which finds Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin starring as a rancher named Royal Abbott fighting for his land and family, and who discovers a supernatural mystery on his Wyoming ranch. Described as a “thrilling Western saga with hints of wry humor and supernatural mystery,” the series hails from creator and executive producer Brian Watkins.
The show looks to blend the ranching drama stylings of the Paramount Network hit series “Yellowstone” with the supernatural mystery box nature of “Lost,” as a massive void appears on Abbott’s ranch just as he’s in a land battle with the neighboring family.

Prime Video announced on Wednesday that its western thriller series “Outer Range,” starring Josh Brolin, will premiere April 15 on Prime Video with a two-episode premiere.
In the official teaser trailer, which dropped on Wednesday, Brolin’s Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott says a highly unusual prayer at the dinner table: “Dear God … we ask that you show us the way here, because we’re in trouble. You made this crazy world, so maybe you can give us some sort of hint as to what you’re up to. Because I don’t have the first f—ing clue.”
The trailer, which brings the western setting of “Yellowstone” and the freaky “what the hell is happening?” vibe from “Yellowjackets,” shows glimpses of strange symbols, blood, a police chase, a dead bear and Lili Taylor seemingly communicating with an unseen entity, ends with Brolin screaming, “There is a great void!”

Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.
For the 30th annual PGA ceremony slated for Saturday evening, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton, we already know that the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. Could it be a blockbuster like “A Star Is Born,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Black Panther”? Or maybe a critical favorite such as “Roma,” “Green Book” or “The Favourite”?

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. That is three days before the academy announces the nominations for the Oscars. While the PGA ceremony is not televised, it is an important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 20 of the most recent 29 Best Picture champs, including last year’s double winner. “The Shape of Water.”
Since both groups expanded the Best Picture category, the PGA has predicted 70 of the 81 of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years. Last year the guild went seven for nine in previewing the Oscars line-up: “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The other four guild nominees were “The Big Sick,...

Now we know what the most popular movies are vying for Oscars this year: The Producers Guild of America’s motion picture and television nominations went mainstream. Winners will be revealed at the 30th Annual Producers Guild Awards, to be held January 19 at the Beverly Hilton.
Many of these films will wind up on the the final list of Oscar nominations to be revealed on January 22; the eventual winners are here as well. That does not mean that “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Quiet Place,” or “Crazy Rich Asians” will land Best Picture nominations, but it is a sign of strength and popularity. Oscar voters tend to take degree of difficulty in production into consideration, and may lean into big box office hits this year.
(Left off the PGA list are long-shot Best Picture contenders “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “First Man.”)
