Another of Kitano's masterpiece is also his most commercially successful film, taking $23.7 million in the Japanese box office and $31.1 million worldwide, mainly because of its wide release in the US that reached 55 theaters. Furthermore, Kitano won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival and yet again, plenty of awards from all over the world, and finally some from the Japanese Academy, although he was solely mentioned in the editing one, along Yoshinori Ohta.

The story behind the production is, once again, one of extreme interest. Shortly after Shintaro Katsu's death, who played the main character throughout the Zatoichi franchise, Kitano was approached by the very powerful madam and ex-dancer Saito. She was a close friend of Katsu's, and owned the rights to everything pertaining to Zatoichi. An extremely wealthy woman, the owner of dozens of strip clubs,...

In the 1960s, director Kinji Fukasaku created what would be the ultimate yakuza-sage for years to come with his “Battles Without Honor and Humanity”-series. While the various features of the series can be regarded as great entertainment on the one hand, they gain much more value when considered as a reflection on human greed, power and manipulation. Over the course of his career, director Takeshi Kitano has made quite a number of features, such as “Sonatine” or “Brother”, which would blend these themes with a certain poetic or philosophical approach, depending on your point of view. However, with the “Outrage”-series, he attempted to create his own version of Fukasaku's epic, albeit with a much more cynical undertone.

(Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: "Tokyo Godfathers.")
In Satoshi Kon's fantastic holiday fable, an unruly alcoholic named Gin, an angry and rebellious runaway teen named Miyuki, and a stoic albeit lonely trans woman named Hana are all surviving their Christmas Eve on the streets of Tokyo as a makeshift, houseless family. As the three dumpster dive to try and find something good to eat, they come across an abandoned newborn baby in the trash. With little to no information on the baby's identity, this ragtag trio spends their night desperately trying to find the parents of the infant and return the baby to safety.
If the premise of "Tokyo Godfathers" sounds vaguely familiar, it's because Kon was inspired by the John Ford western, "3 Godfathers," which starred John Wayne and was based on Peter B. Kyne...

After three features which focused on Japanese media, society and the cult surrounding his own persona, director Takeshi Kitano decided to return to the yakuza-genre with “Outrage”, which was the start of a trilogy of movies about the inner turmoil of a criminal syndicate. Given the commercial failure of works such as “Takeshis’” and “Achilles and the Tortoise”, this decision was perhaps also fueled by the idea of winning back the kind of audience that got to know the filmmaker through “Sonatine”, “Brother” or “Hana-Bi”. While this premise does not actually sound like “Outrage” might be Kitano’s passion project, the movie itself, along with its successors, is easily one of the best works of the director and, at the very least, another look at the connections of organized crime and society.

It’s not every day that an avant-garde/experimental picture both makes its way to theaters and also has a relatively modest marketing push behind it. Released by Factory 25, and eyeing both a Blu-ray release for the feature itself as well as a vinyl release for its great Keiichi Suzuki score, For The Plasma is just that rare type of art comedy that will hopefully go from the festival world (it played festivals like BAMcinemaFest as well as IndieLisboa) to find an audience in general release.
The debut feature from Bingham Bryant and Kyle Molzan, For The Plasma introduces us to Helen (Rosalie Lowe), a woman living in a remote cabin in Maine forest whose job it is to keep an eye on potential forest fires. However, while looking at numerous monitors all day, she has uncovered something highly profitable within these feeds. When her friend Charlie (Anabelle LeMieux) arrives,...

Earthbound turns 20 years old today, so let’s discuss the cult classic.

Earthbound

Available on Snes, Wii, Wii U
The Snes is arguably home to some of the best Japanese role-playing games ever made, but even among such revered company, Earthbound (known as Mother 2 in Japan) stands out as a brilliant satire about growing up and our fears of conformity. It’s anarchy versus conformity only conformity doesn’t stand a chance. This often funny, always poignant coming of age tale, deeply embedded in suburban mores, centers around four kids, off to save the planet by collecting melodies while en route to defeating the evil alien force known as Giygas.
Earthbound didn’t reinvent the wheel, but it sure had fun twisting the usual Jrpg tropes. There’s a princess you must rescue, not once, but twice, who’s really just a child prodigy,...

In many ways, Takeshi Kitano is perhaps as close to a one man machine as you will find in the filmmaking business. As is generally the case with most of his films, Kitano wrote, edited directed and starred in his latest film to hit the United States called Outrage (2010). Once again, Kitano delves into a story centered on the Yakuza life. As is often, but not always the case, Outrage contains more than a fair share of violence bordering on gratuitous, but relevant given Kitano.s ideology of showing the Yakuza in the extreme light and ironic nature that he often does with his storytelling.
Kitano, credited under the fitting pseudonym of .Beat. Takeshi, plays Otomo, an experienced Yakuza enforcer with an implied history as a boxer. The boss of the head family, known as Mr. Chairman, orders his lieutenant to crack down on the drug trafficking being perpetrated by...

[Our thanks to Guillem Rosset for the following review.]
It's been a while, but Takeshi Kitano has finally returned to the genre that launched him to the international success. After exploring the mysteries of artistic creation and his own inner world with his last three films, Kitano returns with Outrage to his origins and the violent world of the yakuza.
The film revolves about the power struggle within a yakuza clan. Otomo (played by Kitano himself) is a mid-level boss who's ordered to do the dirty work for his boss, Ikemoto.
