In the wake of major advertisers pausing their spending on X shortly after Elon Musk’s reply to an antisemitic conspiracy theory, the social media service formerly known as Twitter has sued left-wing advocacy group Media Matters for allegedly defaming the platform by reporting that ads for major companies appeared next to antisemitic content.
The lawsuit, filed in Texas federal court on Monday, claims that the media watchdog group “knowingly and maliciously manufactured” the report to mislead advertisers into believing that the ad pairings were organic. X seeks monetary damages, as well as a court order directing Media Matters to “immediately delete” the report that led to the exodus of advertisers.
The filing of the lawsuit comes on the heels of Musk posting Saturday that X would file a “thermonuclear” complaint against Media Matters. The message came in response to the organization issuing findings that the platform was placing ads...

Empire Cinemas closed six sites in early July.
Rival operators are circling the six English cinemas closed after the Empire Cinemas chain went into administration in early July, Screen has learned.
The Light Cinemas, Parkway Cinemas and Merlin Cinemas, all from the UK, along with Ireland’s Omniplex Cinema and Arc Cinemas are all understood to be considering taking over the sites. They are in Walthamstow, Wigan, Catterick Garrison, Sunderland, Swindon and Bishops Stortford.
Seven other Empire sites remain open while the Empire Sutton Coldfield has been closed since the Covid lockdown of late 2020.

UK landlords are being forced to renegotiate leases with embattled exhibition giant.
Figures within the UK cinema sector have expressed dismay at how UK landlords are being treated by Cineworld as the troubled, debt-laden exhibition giant attempts to restructure.
It emerged this week that one landlord is fighting back. Cineworld’s 4Dx extreme cinema screen at its flagship Leicester Square venue has reportedly been boarded up by the landlord. When Screen visited on Monday afternoon, the screen was cordoned off and closed and tickets were not available to be bought. Venue staff referred questions about its closure to Cineworld’s PR company.

It's an old adage that comedy doesn't travel well, but some shows definitely fare better than others. As a Brit, I've met many Americans with a creepy zeal for quoting sketches from "Monty Python's Flying Circus" at me. "Red Dwarf" is hugely popular where I live in the Czech Republic. And the bawdy BBC sitcom "'Allo! 'Allo!" sold to 56 countries -- the cast was reportedly greeted "like the Beatles" during a visit to Bulgaria. I once had the pleasure of dining at a pizza restaurant in the Serbian capital of Belgrade called 'Allo! 'Allo! where all the pies were named after the characters.
But one British sitcom that doesn't seem to travel well is also one of our most enduringly popular, "Only Fools and Horses." The show follows the fortunes of the Trotter family, headed by a dodgy wheeler-dealer whose dubious get-rich-quick schemes always go disastrously wrong. It aired from...

The owners of iconic British comedy show “Only Fools and Horses” have won a copyright battle against an “Only Fools”-themed dining show.
“Only Fools The (cushty) Dining Experience” is billed as an “interactive dining show” in which diners are subsumed into the world of the long-running TV series, which aired on BBC 1 between 1981 and 1991, with actors dressed as the characters delivering a part-scripted, part-improvized performance.
In a judgment handed down today, Deputy High Court Judge John Kimbell found in favor of Shazam Productions, a production company owned by the heirs of John Sullivan, creator of “Only Fool and Horses.”
Sullivan died in 2011 but his wife Sharon and children James, Dan and Amy, continue to run Shazam Productions as a vehicle for exploiting the “Only Fools and Horses” IP. Among the projects they have granted a license to are board games, books and a musical co-written by James Sullivan and comedian Paul Whitehouse.

Update: John Sullivan was arrested and charged on January 14th, according to the Department of Justice, with “one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and one count of interfering with law enforcement engaged in the lawful performance of their official duties incident to and during the commission of civil disorder.” An FBI affidavit discounts Sullivan’s claim to be a journalist: “He has admitted,” the agent writes of Sullivan, “that...

‘He pops up absolutely everywhere doesn’t he?’ says Daniel Mays about his Code 404 co-star Stephen Graham. You could say the same of Mays. A draw on any cast list, between them in the last year alone they’ve appeared in almost 20 major titles – 1917, Good Omens, White Lines (Mays), The Irishman, The Virtues, Line of Duty, Save Me (Graham) to name just a handful.
Why Mays and Graham are in such high and regular demand is no mystery; they’re two of our best. Mays has an instant affability on screen that he’s able to turn to tragedy or comedy or both at once. Graham’s characters are often the reverse, unknowable and dangerous before he lays their vulnerabilities bare.
In sci-fi comedy Code 404, they play detectives with a tangled personal history. Mays is a Di unexpectedly brought back from the dead via some bug-ridden experimental AI tech.

The final verdict is in: Pokémon Sword and Shield are welcome additions to the franchise, but have fans’ worst fears – a lack of content – truly been realized?
The answer to that question will naturally differ from person to person depending on how thoroughly one decides to explore optional content, of course. There are, however, some facets of the Switch exclusives open to scrutiny with an objective focus, namely the main story. Traditionally speaking, each installment of the core RPGs usually boasts a meaty campaign for players to chew through, mostly consisting of a region-specific Gym Challenge.
Side stories and distractions are often interspersed within that primary goal as a means of interim pace changes, which cumulatively adds to an overall runtime of around the 40-50-hour mark. It should come as a great relief to Trainers wary of the current criticisms, then, that Sword and Shield promise a similarly-sized experience.

Stephen King films can be a mixed bag. For every really good film adaptation (Carrie; The Shining; Misery) there’s a bad one (Maximum Overdrive; Graveyard Shift; The Dark Tower). There are also a whole slew of Stephen King films that fall somewhere in the middle. I think Children of the Corn is one of the films that falls squarely in the middle of the pack.
There are some real strengths in the film. It has some genuine star quality, with soon-to-be action star Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) and TV heartthrob Peter Horton (Thirtysomething) starring as married couple Burt and Vicky, who become stranded in a town filled only with murderous, brainwashed children. The children are led by Isaac (John Franklin), who has a direct connection with an evil entity the children worship called He Who Walks Behind the Rows, and Malachai (Courtney Gains), Isaac’s mean-spirited enforcer.

It would be tough finding a harder working actor than Liev Schreiber who has successfully transitioned from supporting roles in movies to his very own TV show, playing fixer Ray Donovan on the Showtime series for five seasons. He’s received four Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy nominations playing that role.
In between seasons he’s found the time to make Chuck, a movie about the famed “Bayonne Brawler,” Chuck Wepner, whose career was documented in the Espn “30 for 30” doc, The Real Rocky. Besides being the New Jersey Heavyweight Champion in the ‘70s, Wepner famously went 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali, but his somewhat tragic story was also the inspiration for Sylvester Stallone to make Rocky.

Preston Sturges’s immortal 1941 Sullivan’s Travels fulfils its own premise brilliantly. Citizen Smith will not be returning to our screens, despite actor Robert Lindsay hyping up a possible comeback for Wolfie.
Lindsay told The Independent that the rise of Jeremy Corbyn to hot favourite to lead the Labour Party had inspired talk of a reboot.
However, the family of the show's creator John Sullivan have rejected any plans to bring back the hit BBC sitcom.
"These stories are news to us - and we own the rights to the series," said Jim Sullivan of Shazam Productions.

"Every episode of Citizen Smith was written by Dad - all the lines, ideas and plots were his.
"As we have said about Only Fools and Horses, the show only ever had one writer and it is going to stay that way.

John Sullivan, co-director of Dinesh D’Souza’s popular documentary films, is suing the producers of God’s Not Dead claiming that he and actor Brad Stine originated the plot of what became one of the biggest Christian films of the modern era. In a lawsuit filed Friday against Pure Flix Entertainment and co-founder David A.R. White, Sullivan and Stine allege they co-created and wrote a comprehensive original treatment for a faith-based film similar to what eventually became God’s Not Dead and negotiated its production with Pure Flix, which then cut the two out of the equation. Sullivan’s Travels
Written and directed by Preston Sturges
USA, 1941
At the start of Sullivan’s Travels, movie director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) has been screening his latest effort. The picture within the picture concludes with an intense rooftop fight aboard a train. It’s almost absurd in its inflated action and Sullivan is not at all pleased with his creation. This type of escapist entertainment may be all right for some, but it’s social commentary he now seeks. These are troubling times, he argues, with war in Europe and strikes on the home front, and the ambitious, idealistic filmmaker wants something beyond mere cinematic frivolity. Apparently, so did the director of Sullivan’s Travels, the great Preston Sturges. At least that’s what he ended up with anyway.

There are very good intentions at the core of America: Imagine a World Without Her, Dinesh D’Souza and John Sullivan‘s follow-up to their smash hit 2016: Obama’s America. In focusing much of their attack on Howard Zinn, the filmmakers look to rewrite history again, this time in a more positive manner. That isn’t to say the documentary is out to defend slavery or imperialism or any of the other shameful things spotlighted in “The People’s History of the United States,” but it does concentrate on how the nation has continually gotten on the right path and put its wrongdoings behind. Narrating and appearing on screen as the film’s main driving force, D’Souza implies that America is great because we did have that Civil War and eventually abolished slavery. Basically, he believes we should be celebrating the fact that we no longer treat people like property, not...

This involves pitting straw-person arguments courtesy of the designated interviewees from the “Blame America First” crowd (a Sioux activist who'd like to see the Black Hills.

Update: Lionsgate has confirmed it is in talks to buy U.S. rights to the docu America: Imagine A World Without Her, which Dinesh D’Souza and John Sullivan wrote and co-directed, with Gerald R. Molen producing. While word from the filmmakers was the film would be released July 4, Lionsgate will put it in limited release June 27 and open wide July 2. According to Lionsgate, D’Souza “journeys to discover what has made America great and its impact on the world. D’Souza argues that American ideals and patriotism should not be things we shy away from. He defends not an idealized America, but America as it really is, and measures itself not against a utopian ideal, but against the rest of the world.” Lionsgate handled home entertainment on 2016: Obama’s America. Will this have the flash and controversy of the Obama movie? It will certainly get more distribution backing than the last pic did,...

David Beckham made his much-anticipated appearance in Only Fools and Horses on Friday night (March 21).
The former footballer starred opposite Sir David Jason (Del Boy) and Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney) in the one-off skit for Sport Relief.
The Only Fools short saw Del Boy and Rodney trying to flog 'Golden Balls' boxers, which Rodney begrudgingly modelled.
Sitting in the cafe, Del Boy was moaning about 'that git' who signed the pants, only for Beckham himself to correct him: "They're boxer briefs."
Beckham, as well as delivering the classic line "Shut up you tart" to Rodney, also told Del Boy's younger brother exactly how to model the boxers.
Swapping their favourite artist picks, Rodney went for Matisse while Beckham chose Tony Hart: "That Morph cracks me up."
Trying to keep a low-profile in the market, Beckham then drew attention to himself in a humiliating incident which paid tribute to...

Only Fools and Horses will not return for a full series, according to writer Jim Sullivan.
The much-loved comedy will return for a one-off sketch for Sport Relief on BBC One tonight (March 21), with David Beckham starring opposite Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.
However, Jim Sullivan - the son of late creator John Sullivan - has confirmed that there are no plans for it to return for further episodes.
"It's a relief now that it's done as we were all sworn to secrecy for what felt like a long time," he told Radio Times.
"It's also good to be able to set the record straight about some of the rumours - that the sketch is based on a 'missing script' about Del's 65th birthday, that it's a trailer for a new episode, that we're writing a new series etc. None of it is true."

Sir David Jason never expected to return to 'Only Fools and Horses' following the death of the show's creator. The actor plays Del Boy in the popular British comedy - which has a special sketch for Sport Relief that will air on March 21 - and thought it was ''the end'' of the show when John Sullivan died in April 2011. Speaking on 'The Michael McIntyre Chat Show', David explained: ''As you know, unfortunately, bless him, John Sullivan, the creator of it all, very unfortunately died. ''And as Nick Lyndhurst used to say, Sullivan made the ammunition and we just fired it.

David Jason has admitted that he never expected to return to Only Fools and Horses.
The Del Boy actor said that the death of creator John Sullivan convinced the cast that there would be no more episodes of the BBC sitcom.
A special Only Fools and Horses sketch will air on Sport Relief on Friday (March 21).
Speaking on The Michael McIntyre Chat Show, Jason said: "As you know, unfortunately, bless him, John Sullivan, the creator of it all, very unfortunately died.
"And as Nick Lyndhurst used to say, Sullivan made the ammunition and we just fired it. So he was the brains behind the whole thing. So when dear John died, we thought that was the end of it."
The 74-year-old also revealed that it was David Beckham who came up with the idea of making a cameo appearance in the Sport Relief sketch.

Roger Lloyd-Pack was originally scripted into the new 'Only Fools and Horses' sketch. The late Trigger actor - who passed away in January following a battle with pancreatic cancer - had expressed his desire to star in the charity special with Sir David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst and football legend David Beckham before his untimely passing. The new sketch was written by Jim and Dan Sullivan, the sons of show creator John Sullivan, who passed away in 2011. Prequels, sequels, spin-offs and remakes are a regular occurence in pop culture. They create healthy (and sometimes unhealthy) debate amongst fans, and one of the reasons for their popularity is the creation of great characters.
If people fall in love with a character, sometimes it makes sense for them to be made the King of their own film or series. In the case of TV, you have the upcoming Better Call Saul to look forward to, charting the rise of Breaking Bad’s much-loved criminal lawyer. But then you also have Joey, which should have been huge following the success of Friends, but instead ended up dying a death.
There are plenty of TV characters who have walked off into the sunset for new adventures, but the prequel series is one that is often overlooked. John Sullivan’s Rock and Chips – which charted Del Boy and Rodney Trotter’s upbringing – was a gallant attempt,...

David Beckham has spoken about his upcoming appearance in an Only Fools and Horses sketch.
The football icon said it was "nerve-racking" filming the one-off scene to be used in BBC One's Sport Relief coverage later this month.
Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst return in the sketch as Del Boy and Rodney Trotter, who bump into the former England captain in Sid's Cafe.
"I'm a huge fan of the show. I have been for many years, as far back as I can remember," Beckham told Radio Times. "Being from the East End of London, it's what I was brought up on."
He continued: "The day of filming started off with a slightly sleepless night, going over my script. The thought of being on set with Nicholas and David was obviously very nerve-racking."
Creator John Sullivan's writer son Jim praised Beckham's performance, saying: "His acting and delivery were very good.

Only Fools and Horses legend Roger Lloyd-Pack died last month after losing a battle with pancreatic cancer.
The comedy legend will be sorely missed by TV fans and when we caught up with his Only Fools co-star and close friend Paul Barber, we spoke about what made Lloyd-Pack so special and how there was so much more to him than the character Trigger.
Barber also shared his thoughts on a possible Only Fools reunion.
Paul on his memories of Roger...
Whoever has worked with Roger can count him as family. Every show he's done, he turned it into a family environment. I am sure everyone who has worked with him will say that. To me he was a great mate - fabulous. I was actually in Liverpool when he died.
I was on set all day and didn't turn my phone on until about 3pm, by which point when I did turn it on,...

The sad death of Roger Lloyd-Pack last week marked the passing of one of the UK’s great comic actors. A hugely recognisable face in British film and television, Lloyd-Pack’s comedic talents shined in shows such as The Vicar Of Dibley and the hugely underrated The Old Guys, while more serious appearances in the likes of 2011′s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy allowed him to flex his acting muscles.
Indeed, despite being largely associated with comedy, he was a classically trained and accomplished stage actor and recent performances in Richard III and Twelfth Night were acclaimed by critics.
Yet it will always be the role of simple road sweeper Trigger in the immortal Only Fools And Horses that the man will be best remembered for. And it’s not hard to understand why. The only actor other than Del Boy and Rodney to appear in both the first and final episodes of the show,...

Only Fools and Horses is to return as part of this year's Sport Relief.
The classic BBC comedy will make a comeback with a short sketch to be featured during the charity event from Comic Relief. More details are to be confirmed.
The sketch would mark the show's first material since creator and writer John Sullivan passed away from viral pneumonia in 2011.
Sullivan is said to have had hundreds of ideas for Only Fools' return and his sons, Dan and Jim, have been working on bringing their father's ideas to life.
David Jason, who played Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter, recently described a new script as "very good".
In December 2012, Jason revealed that Sullivan had planned to centre a new episode of Only Fools around Del Boy's 65th birthday.
"The idea of it was Del's 65th birthday," he said. "That was his premise. There was nothing else said. He just wanted to know what I felt.

Here's what Michael thought of Bridget, a Ray Donovan episode that focuses on family with predictably painful results...
This review contains spoilers.
1.8 Bridget
Fun Fact: Del Boy and Rodney’s mum, gawd bless ‘er, was deliberately written as a deceased character after writer John Sullivan observed that many cockney families had a tendency to venerate a dead female family member. A similar thing occurs in many Irish families and it’s certainly true of the Donovans, formerly of Boston, Massachusetts. Bridget Donovan, by whom I mean Ray’s sister, not his daughter, has hung deathly over this entire series. Finally, she gets an episode named for her. Or is it her namesake niece?
Whoever it is, (both, actually) Bridget is an episode concerned with families and relationships. It’s a full-cast diversion. Lena, who has been given very little to do so far, is...

There are great dialogue-free scenes (most of Buffy’s Hush for one) and there are great silent or music-free moments (the credit sequences in Game of Thrones’ The Rains of Castamere and The Walking Dead’s The Killer Inside, most of Buffy’s The Body). But here, we’re celebrating musical moments where the score or soundtrack comes to the fore. The scene may or may not include dialogue, the music may be part of the scene (the technical term for this is diegetic) or part of the score, that is, music that does not exist for the characters but enhances the experience for the viewer (non-diegetic or extra-diegetic). If you write a list of your 10 favorite British TV sitcom characters, probably half of them were created by comic genius David Croft. His creations include Mr Humphries (Are You Being Served?), Sergeant Major ‘Shut up’ Williams (It Ain’t Half Hot Mum) Herr Flick (Allo, Allo) and Corporal Jones (Dad’s Army). Like many great comedy writers, Croft collaborated with others including Jimmy Perry and David Floyd. Few writers though could match his creativity or career longevity. Such was Croft’s popularity that he was a regular guest on the British TV convention circuit right up until his death at the age of 89.
Paul Abbott
BAFTA and Emmy winning writer Paul Abbott, rose from humble origins to become one of the most successful writers in British TV history. His hard-hitting dramas are far removed from the idyllic world of Marple and Midsomer Murders.

No, we are not talking about the 1980 Ulli Lommel flick, the awful 2005 flick (or its senseless sequels, though the third wasn't too bad), or even the failed worm-eating WWE grappler. What we have here could be the most terrifying iteration of the mythical character yet, if only because it's on a kids' channel.
