On April 17th, Umbrella Home Entertainment in Australia will be giving the film a collector’s edition Blu-ray release – and copies are available for pre-order Here! (Just make sure you have the ability to play Region B Blu-rays before ordering one.)

Director and documentarian Mark Hartley scores both a film history and comedy success with this ‘wild, untold’ account of the 1980s film studio that was both revered and despised by everyone who had contact with it. Reviews like this are tough, because a movie like Return of the Living Dead has been discussed-to-death on the internet for at least the last two decades. What can one possibly say that another hasn’t already? In addition to that, this is also the third Blu-ray release of the film I have seen. There was the disappointing MGM release in 2010, and then much better Second Sight release from the UK that dropped in 2012 and resurrected the original audio track containing the songs that were cut from the Us release. And here comes Scream Factory to topple them all. Sorry to spoil my review, but this is the definitive Blu-ray release of Return of the Living Dead. I have never seen this movie look so beautiful in all the years I have watched it. Couple with that, the fact that there are several audio options for you to choose from,...

It’s hard to believe that the same year George A. Romero released Day of the Dead, the ultra-gory, ultra-bleak conclusion of the trilogy he began with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, writer/director Dan O’Bannon was spinning Romero’s original classic into a totally new direction with The Return of the Living Dead. Whereas Romero’s film is dark and sober, Return is pure punk rock anarchy—a horror comedy that successfully manages to be equal parts horror and comedy while introducing one of the most significant elements into the zombie mythos since Romero first made them flesh-eaters 17 years earlier.
The film’s ingenious premise—which was “meta” before being meta was really a thing—is that the events of the original Night of the Living Dead really did take place and were covered up, with the zombies locked into airtight drums and left in the basement of a medical supply facility.

On August 7, 1987, "Masters of the Universe" stank up movie theaters across the country and killed any hopes of kicking off a live-action franchise for He-Man and his merry band of heroes (the property is currently in the process of being rebooted with the help of "Thor" screenwriter Christopher Yost). As I wrote earlier this week, "MotU" actually wasn't all bad, with standouts like Frank Langella's Skeletor and Bill Conti's excellent score keeping the film just this side of unwatchable. Glory be! A happy byproduct of my online research arose in the form of a YouTube recommendation for a video entitled "The Making of Masters of the Universe the Motion Picture," which is not, as it turns out, an extra ripped from the film's DVD release but rather a segment from a 2012 documentary entitled "Toy Masters," which boasts the following synopsis on IMDb: "Filmmakers Roger Lay, Jr. and Corey Landis...

“Jurassic World,” now the third biggest movie in history, had its fair share of references to its source material, Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster “Jurassic Park,” but in a parallel universe, there’s a version that had even more to reference. Though almost twenty years have passed without much word leaking out, it turns out that in the aftermath of the film’s blockbuster success (at the time, it was the top-grossing film ever), an animated spin-off was planned, one that ultimately never came to pass. Concept artist William Stout, whose credits include “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Prestige” and “The Myth,” has revealed on his website that in the 1990s, he was recruited to help work on a cartoon spin-off of the blockbuster hit. “This was not going to be a kiddy show,” Stout wrote. “They wanted the show to be a mature prime time series with top writers and state-of-the-art...

“Where are they? Where are your friends now? Tell me about the loneliness of good, He-Man. Is it equal to the loneliness of evil?”
You never know what’s brewing at Webster University’s Strange Brew cult film series. It’s always the first Wednesday evening of every month, and they always come up with some cult classic to show while enjoying some good food and great suds. The fun happens at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, Mo 63143).
Master Of The Universe starring Dolph Lundgren as ‘He-Man’ wasn’t given a chance back when it was released in 1987 simply because it was based on a toy. Nowadays, with big-budget epics based on video games and other playthings (Transformers, Legos, Battleship)being a common occurrence, you’d think people would be a bit more open-minded. The downfall that faced Tobe Hooper's creative relationship with The Cannon Group in the eighties wasn't much different than the fate of George A. Romero's collaboration with Orion Pictures. After leaving an iconic legacy for horror in the previous decade, Hooper had a reputation to live up to when he made a three picture deal with Golan and Globus that resulted in the ambitious, but entertaining failure Lifeforce, the misunderstood parody The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and the family friendly remake of Invaders From Mars that helped sink Cannon out of Hollywood forever.
When considering the talent involved in this production that included screenwriting duties from Dan O' Bannon and special effects from legends like Stan Winston (who was simultaneously working on James Cameron's Aliens), John Dykstra (Star Wars) and Alec Gillis, this quite frankly should have been an exhilarating fantasy spectacle at the very least. Ironically,...

Here's a great series of concept art for the 1985 cult horror film The Return of the Living Dead. The early pre-production art features various zombie characters from the movie. These were done by illustrator William Stout, and the art served as a basis for creating the makeup and effects for the movie. If you haven't seen this film yet, you should give it a go. It's actually a really fun and entertaining horror comedy. Here's a brief plot summary:
When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.
I also included the trailer for the movie. Thanks to Stan Winston School of Character Arts for the art.

Even if you haven't heard about the legendary “Mummies of Guanajuato” – a massive army of well-preserved human bodies first unearthed in Mexico nearly 150 years ago – chances are you've seen some of the horror films that were directly or partially inspired by them. All Photos © Guanajuato Museo de las Momias Beginning with references to Aztec mummies and similar undead walkers in Mexican horror films of the '60s and '70s (often pitting the monsters against popular wrestlers like El Santo), cinematic nods to the dessicated specimens also include Werner Herzog's classic 1979 version of Nosferatu – which included an extended scene of the mummies in close-up during the haunting opening credits – and the distinctive ghouls of Return of the Living Dead, which director Dan O'Bannon and designer William Stout based on images from the Guanajuato collection. Apart from their many movie appearances, the mummies are also a vital part of Mexican culture: the Guanajuato exhibit,...

The Return of the Living Dead‘s Tarman is featured in this month’s offerings from Fright Rags and multiple items are now available for pre-order, including a limited edition shirt and poster designed by William Stout:
“Remember the good old days of trick-or-treating where all we had were the Ben Cooper/Collegeville vinyl costumes and cheapo paper-thin masks with the rubber band that lasted like three houses before it busted? Well, we’re bringing those back – but in a modern way. We tapped master artist Monte Ward to create a brand new Tarman mask (based on Stout’s original design), made of high-density plastic, complete with black elastic band. This isn’t your childhood “trick-or-snap” mask!”
Includes:
Exclusive Tarman face mask handmade and hand painted by Monte Ward Original Tarman two-sided t-shirt designed by William Stout and colored by Ray Frenden. Collector’s box with mask window

Remember a couple of days ago when we shared that little tease from Fright Rags' newsletter showing what looked like a vintage-style Halloween mask of “Tarman” from Return of the Living Dead? Well, it turns out our guess was spot-on, as proven by their latest update. From 10Am Thursday, July 11th through 10Am Monday, July 15th (all times Eastern), Fright Rags will be taking orders for an extremely limited run of a special Tarman Box Set, which includes a two-sided shirt print featuring a cool new design by William Stout, and a plastic mask designed by sculptor Monte Ward that was inspired by those old Ben Cooper dime-store costumes – which most monster kids of a certain age fondly remember, even if they were cheap as hell and smelled nasty. The set comes packaged in a vintage-style costume box with retro graphics. Also available on July 11th is a limited edition...

Toy Masters, on the other hand, is my biggest disappointment of this year’s Fantasia Festival. It’s almost not fair to review the film, it is such a work in progress. The Q&A after the film was filled with talk of extra footage that the production team were about to shoot or had just shot, “Dolph Lundgren? “Does anybody have a laptop?” That’s the way Thomas Jane started off his Raw Studios panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. It seems there was some sort of technical difficulty with their initial set-up.
And as he’s known to do, Jane just rolled with it.
After securing a computer from one of the attendees, and getting all that set up, the panel was getting off to a late start. As people were still trickling in, Jane seemed to decide, “To hell with it; let’s just do this.” And the panel started. There was none of the usual formality associated with a Comic-Con panel on display here. There was no barrier between the panelists and the audience. Instead of sitting up on a stage talking into microphones, as is the Comic-Con standard, these panelists stood on the floor talking with their fans. It was an incredibly refreshing thing to see.

I sat down with Raw Studios creators Thomas Jane (The Punisher, The Mist) and Tim Bradstreet (Hellblazer) on Thursday to talk about their visions for film, comic books, and stories that become both, such as the Twilight Zone-esque Dark Country. These two are intensely involved in their creative work and very dedicated to dark storytelling. They’re also Monster Kids, through and through. Huzzah!
Famous Monsters. You hear so much about Comic-Con having becoming this gigantic, mainstream, corporate thing with toy companies and whatnot… I have comic creator friends who complain that it’s not the way it used to be. How does Raw Studios still fit into Comic-Con for you?
Tim Bradstreet. We fit in against the wall, don’t we, Tom?

Somewhere, I'm sure William Stout is grinning. I think the latest Alamo Drafthouse and Mondo print - for Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park , by Aaron Horkey - is very much influenced by the man who draws dinos so well. The art you see below was revealed last night at the Alamo Drafthouse "Mondo Mystery Movie." The event included a 35mm surprise screening of Jurassic Park with legendary FX artist Phil Tippett in attendance. In honor of Alamo's guest, a surprise 2nd screening of The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad on 35mm was shown (the film that inspired Phil Tippett to be a filmmaker). Unfortunately, it sounds like you'll never get one. The print was sold last night to the Drafthouse's audience. It's the first in a series of Jp -inspired prints leading up to the...

Few contemporary artists work in so wide an array of media as William Stout. But since the start of his career, the genial genre giant has been fueled by a desire to fuse his love of horror, science fiction and fantasy to a myriad of projects – in comics, books, TV, film and music. A regular at the San Diego Comic-Con, he illustrated the cover of the special issue of The Hollywood Reporter given free to attendees of this year's convention. And his production design talents have adorned such films as the original Conan the Barbarian, The Return of the Living Dead (on which he served as the youngest production designer in film history), Masters of the Universe, Men in Black, The Prestige, The Mist and Pan's Labyrinth....

A brand new never-before-seen print was screened for the sold out crowd, and writer/director Kevin Smith hosted a Q&A panel with director Joe Johnston, star Billy Campbell, seven time Academy Award winning make-up artist Rick Baker, screenwriters Paul De Meo and Danny Bilson, and artist William Stout.

If you live in Los Angeles (or within driving distance) and you're a fan of Joe Johnston's The Rocketeer, this is for you.
This Tuesday, June 21st, 2011, Disney is hosting a 20th anniversary screening of a newly restored version of the film at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the same theatre where it premiered back in 1991. And though the movie is fantastic - it happens to be one of my all-time personal favorites - the film itself isn't even the main attraction at this event. Writer/director/fanboy favorite Kevin Smith will be hosting a panel before the film featuring director Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger), the Rocketeer himself Bill Campbell, legendary make-up designer Rick Baker, screenwriters Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, and illustrator William Stout to talk about the movie.
All audience members will get a special 20th anniversary Rocketeer program, and D23 Members...
