Classically-trained leading actor of the Italian stage, from 1927. Entered films in 1934. Did some of his best work under the director Vittorio de Sica, notably as a villain in
Miracle in Milan (1951). Founded a theatre which employed Luchino Visconti during his early career. From the 1960's, appeared occasionally in international productions, memorable as Pope Alexander III in
Becket (1964). Frequently used as a voice-over actor, dubbing American stars like Kirk Douglas and Richard Widmark into Italian.
