Plot: A businessman mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell with only an old grist mill. Forced to work as a beast of burden, he must find a way to escape before the birth of his child.
Review: It’s easy to set your expectations for a certain level of comedy when you see a film starring Lil Rel Howery. But that would be a mistake when it comes to The Mill as this is anything but a comedy. It’s clear Howery really wanted to make a legitimate horror film with a modern bend to it. Waking up in a mysterious mill, Joe Stevens (Lil Rel) is forced to push an old grist mill or face the consequences. The tactics of motivation are manipulative and can be pretty brutal. As someone with a bad back, I was constantly re-adjusting in my seat at the sheer stress put onto...

Alice Cooper fans run the gamut between teenage goths in ripped fishnets and pension-age old rockers with slightly grown-out mullets and a little too much denim. After all, he’s been making music for close to fifty years, and a star for most of that time.
Never exactly a critical darling, his legions of rabid obsessives still comb old record shops for sixties bootlegs and cram arenas worldwide to hear the hits (and more; much, much more) delivered faultlessly just one more time. And yet, with all that, he still feels like ours: that’s why we all call him ‘Alice’, like he’s the guy we see in the pub every Friday night.
He’s the shock rock icon who’s kept the tabloids in lurid copy for the last five decades: a sneering, androgynous serial killer on stage in the seventies, smeared with blood and eyeliner,...

'True Grit' 2010: Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges. 'True Grit' 2010 review: 'Far Superior' to 1969 John Wayne Western I've gotten to the point with the Coen brothers where I just expect something wonderful every time they make a movie. For me, that was the case even with an effort like True Grit. For others, however, it was different. When the Coens announced their plans to adapt Charles Portis' novel, heads turned and were scratched by many. After all, not only were the brothers going to adapt a book, something they had done only once before (twice if you count The Odyssey), but they were going to remake a movie made famous by John Wayne in 1969. To many, especially lovers of Westerns, touching True Grit was sacrilege. But the Coens weren't deterred, and thankfully so. Their adaptation of True Grit is not only far superior to Henry Hathaway's 1969 version, it...

Buck Wild (2013)
Directed by: Tyler Glodt
Written by: Matthew Albrecht, Tyler Glodt
Cast: Matthew Albrecht (Craig), Isaac Harrison (Lance), Dru Lockwood (Tom), Jarrod Pistilli (Jerry), Mark Ford (Billy Ray), Meg Cionni (Candy), Joe Stevens (Clyde)
One classic situation in horror (and other genre films for that matter) is the group of friends going into the wilderness to get away from it all. The only difference between horror and other genres is that instead of comic mishaps and talking about their feelings, someone is inevitably going to get killed, eaten by a monster or said former friends, or transformed into a hideous monster themselves. The great thing about “Buck Wild” is that all that stuff happens.
Craig, Lance, Tom, and Jerry are all headed to the Buck Wild Ranch on a deer hunting trip. Craig is the straight laced, buttoned down one with a ring...

Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges in True Grit
Photo: Paramount Pictures Don't get caught up trying to compare Joel and Ethan Coen's True Grit to the 1969 version that won John Wayne his one and only acting Oscar. There is no comparison. The two films aren't even within a thousand miles of one another.
Instead, look at this as a brand new adaptation of Charles Portis's novel of the same name. The brothers penned the screenplay themselves, tightening it up when necessary and while they'll tell you they pulled most of the dialogue directly from the novel (which they did), the subtle changes to key lines only make it that much better.
In an instance of obvious casting, Jeff Bridges was chosen to fill the shoes of the snarled and drunken U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. He's a weathered old man that loves to drink and tends to shoot first and ask questions later.

USAToday has five new images from the Coen Brothers’ upcoming remake of “True Grit”. There is also an article on the movie’s new star, Hailee Steinfeld, and her interaction with the guy-centric cast. Steinfeld’s bubbly personality contrasts with her character’s dark intensity. “My goal when I was filming was she would never be happy,” she says. “She’s trying to be as tough as she can be. A father would be the one to help her out of it, but she doesn’t have one.” Hiring Bridges’ Rooster Cogburn makes the two become begrudging surrogates. “The entire time, she’s testing to see if he can be like a father,” she says. Starring Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper, Domhnall Gleeson, Hailee Steinfeld, Paul Rae, Elizabeth Marvel, Dakin Matthews, Nicholas Sadler, Ed Corbin, Joe Stevens and directed by the brothers Coen. Coyote Grace, the up-and-coming Sonoma County-based acoustic duo, joined their Northampton, Ma pal Chris Pureka for both separate and combined sets at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood on Wednesday night. Hailing not from our cultural capitals, but from backroad country and college towns, these three 20-something singer-songwriter-musicians are reinventing traditional Americana for a gender-unbound Facebook generation. They are "self-made" in ways even our most ruggedly independent forebears could not imagine. Coyote Grace's hunky, bearded Joe Stevens is a transman; and lissome, soft-butch Pureka is genderqueer. Their adoring fans transcend the usual boundaries, too, as straight women openly confess to crushes on cleavage-bearing, hip-swaying femme Ingrid Elizabeth. There's a yearning, freight-train-hopping, propulsive energy to many of their songs that suggests not only an indie-band road tour, but the road to one's true identity, a destination on a map still...
