Fiona Apple has offered her first musical output in 2023 with a cover of Idaho’s official state song “Here We Have Idaho” for NPR’s This American Life.
On the May 26th episode titled “Jane Doe,” Apple’s incisive rendition follows a story about a 19-year old intern at the Idaho state legislature who reported that state Representative Aaron von Ehlinger raped her in 2021, and the repercussions she suffered after his public ethics hearing and subsequent resignation. The cover has not yet been widely released, but can be heard at the end of Act Two (starting at the 1:00:52 mark for the online stream).
The Idaho state song makes for an unexpected pick by the New York native, but also feels sonically familiar with backing from Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters collaborators, including drummer Amy Wood, guitarist David Garza, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, and guitarist-engineer John Would. Brandi Carlile has shared her rendition of Diana Ross’ The Wiz showstopper “Home” following its premiere on the latest episode of Ted Lasso.
For her version, Carlile enlisted former Pearl Jam (and current Bob Dylan) drummer Matt Chamberlain, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, pianist Dave Palmer, and a string section of Chauntee and Monique Ross.
It’s unclear if Carlile is a big fan of the Apple TV+ series, but she and Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis have some history: In November 2020, Carlile was among the performers at Sudeikis’ Thundergong benefit live stream,...

Brandi Carlile has shared her contribution to the Season 3 soundtrack of Ted Lasso. Out now, it’s a rendition of “Home,” made famous by Diana Ross in the 1978 film The Wiz.
Carlile’s version of “Home” appears in the penultimate episode of Season 3 of Ted Lasso, and like Dorothy in The Wiz, Ted is a far way from home. Nobody can quite match Ross’ level of soul in the original performance of the song, but Carlile adds a nice twist by swapping out its sweeping orchestral arrangements for a folksier piano.
Carlile also produced the track herself at ShangriLa Studios, with a backing band composed of Matt Chamberlain on drums, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, Dave Palmer on piano and organ, and Chauntee and Monique Ross on strings (no relation). Listen to the cover of “Home” below.

Up until now, Fiona Apple has dissected the intricacies of pain so well that it seemed silly to ask her for anything else. Her 1996 debut album, Tidal, turned heads for placing a young woman’s trauma against a lush piano backdrop, and thereby set in motion the Sad Girl archetype that reverberates through pop to this day. In the midst of praising her art, some critics mistook the 18-year-old’s woeful honesty for weakness. Her precocity was turned against her, and everything became a target for scrutiny or ridicule: her weight,...

Saturday night was a perfect summer evening for free Americana music at Lincoln's Center Damrosch Park as part of the Annual Roots of American Music, Americanafest NYC. The evening featured two of the genres rising stars. The headliners played two sets with the first half of the set featuring mostly original tunes by former Nickel Creek members Sean and Sara Watkin's new band The Watkins Family Hour. They and their extraordinary band entertained a robust crowd of New Yorkers and tourists alike. One of my favorite songs of the evening was their beatiful take on the Grateful Dead's "Brokedown Palace." And co-vocalist Fionna Apple's original song "A Mistake" was quite moving. Yes, she's one of the members of this band.
The second part of the set was a full-on tribute to Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited performed in its entirety by the band -- guitarist/vocalist Sean Watkins, fiddle/vocalist Sara Watkins,...

What happens when you wrangle some of the finest, most critically acclaimed musicians today, fly them to New Zealand and get them to collaborate on an album and live concert? Well, you'll find out in the music documentary "The Sun Came Out," a look behind the curtain at a pretty phenomenal undertaking all done in the name of charity.
In 2001 Neil Finn, lead singer and founder of Crowded House, gathered folks like Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Phil Selway and Ed O'Brien from Radiohead, Sebastian Steinberg of Soul Coughing and Lisa Germano, and they staged three successful charity concerts under the moniker 7 Worlds Collide. Seven years later at Piha on the wild west coast of Auckland, Neil did it again, this time inviting Wilco and KT Tunstall to the line-up, and in addition to three concerts, they recorded a double album of new songs in just three weeks.
