Robert Pattinson Credits James Dean for Twilight's Edward (Videos)

26 October 2009 8:47 AM, PDT | TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news »

”Twilight” star Robert Pattinson says took inspiration from 1950s teen heartthrob James Dean for his role in 'Twilight'. The Improper noted the similarities in an article in August. Rob’s looks and career trajectory are very similar to two early film icons, Dean and Marlon Brando. The 23-year-old British actor, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the hit movie franchise, says he owes his success to the Academy Award-nominated star of “Rebel Without a Cause.” Dean, a relative unknown, vaulted to fame in “East of Eden,” a film based on a novel by Nobel Laureate John Steinbeck. He played the troubled son of a farmer in a story loosely based on the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel. »

American Rust For Guevara Duo

20 October 2009 12:34 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Director Walter Salles and his screenwriting partner Jose Rivera have signed on to adapt Philip Meyer's debut novel American Rust, possibly coming to the screen via Universal, who get first look at the completed script. The novel is about two friends from a derelict Pennsylvanian mill town who hit the road in search of something better, but only encounter violence, mistrust and urban degeneration. Set in 2002, it nevertheless taps into the tradition of depression-era Americana, from authors like William Faulkner and John Steinbeck. Some critics have compared Meyer to Cormac McCarthy.A downbeat story certainly, but with John Hillcoat's hotly anticipated The Road (from McCarthy's novel) finally approaching, it may be that that's not the gloomy prospect for a major studio that it once might have appeared. Salles and Rivera previously brought us the excellent Motorcycle Diaries, which might give some indication of the tone and approach we'd see here. »

Band of the Week: Vandaveer

24 August 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Hometown: Washington, D.C.

Album: Divide & Conquer

Band Members: Mark Charles Heidinger (vocals, multiple instruments), Rose Guerin (vocals)

For Fans Of: Elliott Smith, Frank Sinatra, The Bird & The Bee

Mark Charles Heidinger, the primary member of Vandaveer, is at once an old soul and a little child trapped in a 32-year-old's body. His band's name comes from the middle name of many men in his family, the word engraved on a pocket watch passed down for as many generations as the name itself. He balks at the idea of reading on a Kindle ("I want the pages, man") and begins our conversation by saying, "I am often failed by modern technology—I couldn't answer my phone." Yet he believes the kids' section of The Washington Post is "absolutely the best part of the whole paper" and draws as much songwriting inspiration from Shel Silverstein as from the work of John Steinbeck. »

Twilight Saga Daily Dosage - 06/23/09

23 June 2009 12:54 PM, PDT | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

The Twilight Alaskan Cruise is all anyone is talking about these days; even Ashley Greene chimed in on the subject. The actress is booked to appear on board and doubts her famous costar Robert Pattinson will be in attendance. Ashley is planning on brining her dad with her onboard who will also dub as her bodyguard she joked. The cruise sounds like a blast and we will be bringing you more details about the Twilight party at sea. Speaking of Rob, have you seen the pictures of him being arrested in New York City? Yup, there he stands jammed up against an NYPD Blue squad car with his legs spread and hands cuffed. Okay, so maybe we are taking the scenario out of content and Rob was in character when he was arrested, but it's all the same-lol. Filming for Remember Me is pushing on and after last week's near-accident »

Interview: Christopher Hampton On East Of Eden, The Seagull And Cheri

23 June 2009 11:39 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Christopher Hampton could be considered the king of adaptations, having brought the words of writers as varied as Graham Greene, Ian McEwan, and now Colette to the screen. He won an Oscar last time he wrote a screenplay for director Stephen Frears, 1988's Dangerous Liaisons, and now he's working with Frears again on Cheri. At last weekend's press junket for the movie, we asked Hampton about his process of translating a book as sexy and specific as Colette's Cheri, which tells the story of an affair between an aging courtesan and her friend's young son in glamorous turn-of-the-century Paris. I'll bring you our roundtable talk with Hampton, but first he talked about a few of his upcoming projects, including a new screenplay of John Steinbeck's East of Eden for director Tom Hooper, and plans to bring last fall's New York stage version of The Seagull-- starring Kristin Scott Thomas, »

Ellen Burstyn Walks The Red Carpet And Talks Main Street

4 May 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Ellen Burstyn took a break from discussing politics on the red carpet for Poliwood to tell me about Main Street. There haven't 't been many details on the production, minus one image of Orlando Bloom in costume from Screening Log, but Ellen confirmed she's wrapped shooting the film alongside Bloom, Colin Firth, and Patricia Clarkson. While Burstyn didn't work directly with Amber Tamblyn she did confirm that Tamblyn is part of the project. Main Street is based on the Horton Foote's final screenplay about the town of Five Points and the residents who are disrupted from their daily routines when an outsider introduces some dangerous changes to their lives. Foote nabbed an Academy Award back in 1963 for Best Writing for adapting Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. He's also responsible for bringing John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men and William Faulkner's short story "Tomorrow" to the big screen. »

Seven Scores: Lee Holdridge - East of Eden

27 April 2009 10:21 PM, PDT | Daily Film Music Blog | See recent Daily Film Music Blog news »

We begin the journey with one of Lee's earliest released scores, East of Eden (1981), a mini-series based on John Steinbeck's novel starring Jane Seymour. Up to that point Holdridge was already getting estabilished in film and television scoring, but East of Eden was the first work that got him noticed among film music collectors. A soundtrack LP was released by Elektra and for a long time a suite appearing on Charles Gerhardt Conducts The Film Music of Lee Holdridge was the only CD release of the score. Now the full Holdridge score is available from Intrada, who put out a special disc that begins with the album program in stereo, than culling together the remaining music from surviving elements, several previously unused cues are presented in mono. Here's Lee's thoughts about the picture and the rocky road to getting a commission of this magnitude:

I read many of John Steinbeck's novels growing up. »

Stars To Re-Enact U.S. History

Actors Matt Damon, Viggo Mortensen and Marisa Tomei are among the stars who will re-enact the past for a documentary chronicling American history.

A number of celebrities are teaming up with TV network The History Channel to film dramatic performances for The People Speak, which will shed light on how the country's democracy was shaped by ordinary Americans.

Damon will appear in a vignette about John Steinbeck's 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath, while Tomei will play factory worker Harriet Hanson Robinson.

These clips will be aired together with actual interviews and archival footage.

Damon says, "I am a firm believer in this project, proud to be part of it and proud that we are working jointly with History. The message that is so critical to disseminate is that change doesn't come from the top, but rather from the bottom, and that without everyday citizens pushing to make a difference, there would be no America." »

William Shakespeare’s Land Of The Dead

“They’re coming to get you Benjamin…” Once the home of Benjamin Franklin, soft pretzels, and cheese steaks, this city now has another brotherly love, a dead brother at that.  Zombies. Philadelphia, or recently renamed “Zombiedelphia”, featured zombie related activities throughout the whole month of March.  With various bar crawls, makeup workshops and loads of stage performances, Philadelphia has become the hot spot for all your zombie needs.

The zombies recently invaded audiences in the gut munching East Coast premiere of John Heimbuch’s William Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead.  Both Shakespeare and horror nerds will enjoy this brilliant Elizabethan production of bloody proportions, taking zombies into new and exciting terrain.  Set in 1599, the play features a “true and accurate account of the 1599 zombie invasion of the globe theater”.   Riddled with humorous nods to both Shakespeare’s and Romero’s work, this production opened iast month at Philadelphia 's Plays and Players theater. »

The 25 DVDs Barack Obama Gave to UK Prime Minister

11 March 2009 7:00 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown recently made a visit to the United States to sit down and chat with President Barack Obama. As with most such visits, the two leaders exchange gifts. Brown gave Obama an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian ship Hms Gannet, which was used in anti-slavery patrols alongside its sister ship the Hms Resolute. The desk currently used by Obama in the White House Oval office is built from the timbers of the Hms Resolute and is called the "Resolute desk." Clearly, much thought went into this unique gift, which points out how far America and African-Americans have come and shows the signifance of Obama's jorney to the White House. So what did Obama give to Brown? A box of 25 DVDs. Not only is Brown not a big fan of movies, but apparently the DVDs are not even for the right region. »
