6 Days is a new feature film chronicling the events that took place during the notorious Iranian Embassy siege in London, 1980, when the whole country stopped still and looked on as a tense standoff played out between the British security forces and armed militants, culminating in a dramatic and brutal assault. Directed by Toa Fraser, the film was shot on location in London’s Knightsbridge. The screenplay was written by acclaimed screenwriter Glenn Standring after extensive research and interviews with various individuals who played a key part in the days leading up to, during, and after the Embassy siege.

In 1980, there was a siege on the Iranian Embassy in London, which led to a tense standoff between the Sas and the six gunmen inside. Nearly 40 years later, the story will hit the big screen with 6 Days, an action thriller from The Dead Lands director Toa Fraser. Ahead of a U.K. release this summer, the first trailer has now arrived.
Starring Jamie Bell (Snowpiercer) and Mark Strong, and penned by Glenn Standring (The Dead Lands), 6 Days was shot on location in Princess Gate, London for maximum authenticity. Whether this commitment to detail and accuracy will lend to a thriller worth your time is set to be seen, but it seems they’ve gotten off on the right foot. See the trailer below, along with a poster, synopsis, and set of images, with a tip of the hat to HeyUGuys.

Judging by the pic below, Mark Strong will be helping out in a hostage negotiation capacity.Shot partly in New Zealand and now underway near the notorious incident's actual epicentre, 6 Days is the latest from Kiwi director Toa Fraser (The Dead Lands, Dean Spanley). Action adventure The Dead Lands is in UK cinemas this weekend. Director Toa Fraser talks about its making and how James Cameron’s a fan...
A taut and intense action adventure, The Dead Lands is a superb showcase for director Toa Fraser. It provides an insight into a culture not often explored on screen - set in pre-colonial New Zealand, the film’s dialogue is entirely in the Maori language - while delivering the kind of pared-back revenge story you might expect from a western or a samurai film.
In other words, The Dead Lands is both unique to its country and universal; its historical setting and subtitles might suggest something for the arthouse crowd, but its bruising fight scenes will please the action crowd, too. What’s more, James Cameron is officially a fan.

A film boasting Mark Strong, Jamie Bell and Abbie Cornish in the cast? Don’t mind if we do. That’s the line-up promised by director Toa Fraser and his new based-on-truth thriller 6 Days.According to Deadline, the film will be drawn from the events in April 1980 when six armed gunmen took over the Iranian Embassy in London and held more than two-dozen people hostage. The Sas laid siege to the place and a tense standoff happened across six days, with the forces preparing to raid the place when the time was right. Fraser, who last directed The Dead Lands, is once more teaming up with writer Glenn Standring, and they have several former Sas members acting as consultants while filming takes place this summer. And, as you’ll not be too surprised to learn, the rights to the film will be up for sale at this month’s Cannes Film Market.

Some very promising casting news today, as Jamie Bell, Mark Strong and Abbie Cornish have been set as the principal cast for Toa Fraser’s 6 Days, a siege thriller that the Auckland-based director will shoot this summer as the follow-up to his acclaimed drama The Dead Lands.
Based on a true story, the thriller centers on the storming of the Iranian Embassy at Princes Gate in London, in April of 1980. Six armed gunmen took over two dozen people inside the embassy as hostages during their campaign for Arab national sovereignty in the Khūzestān Province of Iran. The hostage-takers demanded the release of Arab prisoners from jails in the province, located in the south of Iran, as well as their own safe passage out of England, which the British government refused to grant. What 300 does to project Sparta’s glorious lust for battle upon more civilized audiences, The Dead Lands intends to do for the native Maori culture of New Zealand. All the casting is locally sourced (something 300 might have flubbed a bit), lush and exotic locales call back to “simpler” times, and character motivations boil down to animalistic assertions of alpha dominance, which are the only matters that director Toa Fraser deals with. His film might as well be re-titled History Of The Bro Pt. 1, since Glenn Standring’s screenplay never reaches past a simple-as-pie revenge arc, but historical differences do their best to assert some sort of aboriginal individuality versus just any loin-cloth strapped imitator. Key words – “do their best.”

One leader, Wirepa (Te Kohe Tuhaka), suffers an insatiable thirst to crush the wipe out the current détente and aggrandize his legacy throug whichever means available, including the senseless massacre of Hongi’s entire tribe. Left to fend for himself and seeking justice, Hongi will be call upon the help of an estranged warrior (Lawrence Makoare), some would say monster, who lives in a damned region of the...

Sorry for missing last week, dear readers, but I was so busy with work and other commitments that I had to let the column fall by the wayside. But I’m determined to not let that become a habit, and I’ve got something really cool for you this week. In this installment of Trailer Trashin’, I’m taking a look at the upcoming New Zealand action film The Dead Lands.
Premise: After his tribe is slaughtered through an act of treachery, Hongi (James Rolleston), the teenage son of a Maori chieftain, must avenge his father’s murder in order to bring peace and honor to the souls of his loved ones. Vastly outnumbered by a band of villains led by Wirepa (To Kohe Tuhaka), Hongi’s only hope is to pass through the feared and forbidden Dead Lands and forge an uneasy alliance with the mysterious Warrior (Lawrence Makoare...

Exclusive: Icon Film Distribution has acquired UK rights to Xyz Films’ action thriller 6 Days which centers on the 1980 siege of the Iranian Embassy in London. The film covers the April 1980 siege and six days of a tense standoff as a group of highly trained soldiers from Britain’s Special Air Service prepared to raid the building where six armed men had taken over two dozen people hostage. Exclusive: New Zealander Toa Fraser will follow his forthcoming Best Foreign Oscar entry The Dead Lands with 6 Days, an action thriller depicting the tense hostage situation that ensued when armed gunmen stormed London’s Iranian Embassy in April of 1980. Fraser will re-team with his Dead Lands team of writer Glenn Standring, producer Matthew Metcalfe, and Xyz Films on 6 Days, which Xyz is executive producing and will rep worldwide rights on next month at Afm.
The real-life Iranian Embassy siege went down in Princes Gate, London when six armed men took over two dozen people hostage making demands on behalf of the Arab sovereignty movement, inspired by the Iran hostage crisis which began the year prior. On the sixth day following the execution of one of the hostages, members of Britain’s Special Air Service (Sas) were dispatched by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to raid the building, culminating in a violent end to the weeklong stand-off.

Cinema rarely looks to events of a pre-biblical vintage, but a mini-genre of pre-civilisation survival pictures does exist for those who pray to the old ones. The first instance of this primitive return to our roots which spears our interest was Clan of the Cave Bear, mysteriously directed by frequent Scorsese cinematographer Michael Chapman. More recently Kevin Reynolds took us on a adventure to Easter Island with Rapa Nui, and Roland Emmerich’s credibility was crushed with 10,000 BC, whilst the more seriously minded Nicolas Winding Refn added his brooding masculinity to the genre with his monosyllabic Valhalla Rising. Perhaps the highest profile film in the prehistoric swaps of survival is Mel Gibson’s brutal Apocalypto, which seemed to have been culled from the video game techniques of peril and boss fights rather than the historical archive of the local Natural History museum,...

A tediously clichéd, overblown, badly acted action flick full of bloody movie violence dressed up in Maori drag. I’m “biast” (pro): we need more films from cultures all but missing from cinema
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Apparently few films have ever been made entirely in the Maori language… and this one, set in New Zealand at a time before Europeans arrived, would seem to promise a sort of story we haven’t seen much of before, if ever. And so it is an enormous disappointment that The Dead Lands is nothing more than a tediously clichéd, overblown, badly acted action flick full of bloody movie violence dressed up in Maori drag. It starts out promising, with a confrontation between two tribal princes — Hongi (James Rolleston) and Wirepa (Te Kohe Tuhaka) — that speaks to a universal tendency toward...

Xyz holds world rights excluding Australia and New Zealand and will show early footage to buyers in Berlin as part of a dynamic genre slate that includes Kevin Smith’s Tusk.
The Xyz Films principals told ScreenDaily they expect The Dead Lands to raise the profile of Maori hand-to-hand combat in the way their action franchise The Raid has done for the southeast Asian Silat martial art.

Dave Gibson, one of the country’s most high profile producers, has been appointed chief executive of the New Zealand Film Commission.
Gibson replaces Graeme Mason who took up his new role at Screen Australia a couple of weeks ago, the equivalent government agency of New Zealand’s nearest neighbour.
Gibson is both good-natured and not afraid to speak out. His move from the private sector into government will surprise some because of his fierce independence.
His decision to take up this role also represents a move from television into film. He has produced several feature films but for most of his career has working in television across a range of formats and also interactive systems for museums across the world.
The Nzfc is responsible for directly funding film not television (handled by New Zealand On Air) although it does administer the Screen Production Incentive Fund, which caters for blue chip television drama.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

20th Century Fox is set to acquire Glenn Standring's edgy vampire film Perfect Creature, sources close to the deal confirmed Thursday. The deal is not only the largest sale ever made of a New Zealand film but also marks the first time a U.S. studio has acquired a picture from the compact market. With the country on a roll from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the worldwide success of Niki Caro's Whale Rider and Jackson's highly anticipated adaptation of King Kong due at Christmas, Perfect Creature looks to be the country's next highly commercial international release.
