Jack Whitehall voices a disgraced doggie who ends up joining a canine fight club in this mirthless animated caper
These are indeed the misadventures of one of Her Majesty’s pluckier canine companions. Much of the action thus takes place in and around a functionally rendered Buckingham Palace, complete with photorealistic Liz and Phil in union-jack slippers. And yet this is not a homegrown animation. The credits reveal that most of the key personnel – headed by directors Vincent Kesteloot and Ben Stassen – are Belgian. Is there no one on this side of the North Sea who could digitise a few poop gags? Or would that leave the animators facing charges of treason?
Since Fly Me to the Moon (2008), Stassen’s Brussels-based nWave studio has generated cheap and cheerful product for harassed parents to make do with if the latest Pixar has sold out. The Queen’s Corgi script, by Gnomeo & Juliet...

A sequel to 2001's Mike Bassett: England Manager will begin shooting later this year.
Titled Mike Bassett: Interim Manager, the comedy will see Ricky Tomlinson reprise his role as the fictional football coach as he's brought back into the national team setup to assist German coach Jorgen Mannstein.
Steve Barron, who directed the first film, will return to oversee the sequel alongside screenwriters Rob Sprackling and John R Smith.
"Bassett was the last England manager to take the national team to Brazil. We reached the semis then, who knows what we could achieve this time?" Barron said.
Footballer and actor Andy Ansah, who starred in Dream Team and coined Soccer Am's "unbelievable tekkers" segment, is so far the only other cast member confirmed to return from the previous film.
"As the years have gone by, Bassett seems to have dug deeper into football folklore," Barron added of the hapless fictional coach.

Taylor's Victorian-set fantasy-thriller Mariah Mundi and The Midas Box. Jonathan Newman, who wrote and directed the Mandy Moore/Martin Freeman rom-com Swinging with the Finkels will helm the adventure, which follows the journey of a teen boy who discovers a mysterious box in the basement of the opulent Prince Regent, where he's employed. Writing team Rob Sprackling and John Smith (Gnomeo & Juliet) and Gavin Scott (Small Soldiers) have been tasked with translating the first book in Taylor's optioned trilogy into a family-friendly romp, which Newman's described as a mix of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter. While that is a preposterous amount of hype to level on Mariah Mundi and The Midas Box, the project is at least...

I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 picked up 12 nominations for the 39th Annual Annie Awards — announced today by the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood — including Best Animated Feature and Best Director. DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots and Paramount’s Rango won nine nods, and Pixar’s Cars 2 earned seven. Steven Spielberg’s motion-capture The Adventures of Tintin won five nods, including Best Feature; the last animated film built from performances by live actors to earn a nod for the top prize at the Annies was 2006′s Monster House.

I don't put much stock in the Annie Awards and neither does Disney after withdrawing from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010. I have personally never found them to be a good judge of quality and as such don't pay them any particular attention, though I will pass along the information as they have announced their 2011 nominees with Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 2 leading the way with 12 nominations, followed by Puss in Boots and Rango each with nine. Of course, while Disney has withdrawn from the Annies that doesn't mean they aren't considered for the awards as Cars 2, Gnomeo and Juliet and Winnie the Pooh are among the nominees. Last year How to Train Your Dragon reigned supreme over Toy Story 3 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kung Fu Panda 2 take home plenty of hardware, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which beat out...

Kelly Asbury interview: Gnomeo & Juliet, Spirit, Statham, and why animation is getting too expensive
Director Kelly Asbury tells us about making Jason Statham into a garden gnome, Elton John, Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron, and Gnomeo & Juliet…
In a year that’s given us a couple of surprise animated hits, perhaps Gnomeo & Juliet is the least likely. A film made partly in Britain, partly in Canada, and once on the Disney slate, it crosses Shakespeare with gnomes, with a healthy dose of Elton John music. It’s also taken in nearly $200m at the worldwide box office, and has arriving on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK this week.
To mark that fact, we got the chance to chat with its director, Kelly Asbury. And here’s how we got on…
One of the interesting by-products of the film already is that it’s got youngsters a little more curious about Shakespeare. Is that one of the ramifications you were looking for?

For the fifth year in a row, October gets a little creepier and scarier when the Spooky Movie Film Festival rolls into the Washington, D.C. area on Oct. 21-25 for six terrifying nights of of feature films and shorts.
Every year, Spooky Movie redefines the very definition of “horror” by presenting an absolutely unique selection films from all over the world. Most exciting, however, is the return of the father of the splatter movie himself: Herschell Gordon Lewis, who will be screening his latest gore extravaganza, the diabolical The Uh-Oh Show!. This is Lewis’ first gross-out flick in seven years and is an unholy combination of blood, social satire and fairy tales. Bad Lit’s seen it and thinks it’s a real hoot and a holler.

The first official trailer for Touchstone Pictures’ Gnomeo and Juliet is now online, and if you’re looking for a cheap giggle it might be just the ticket! Featuring the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Jason Statham, Patrick Stewart, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, Stephen Merchant and Matt Lucas, the film is an animated retelling of William Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet and, well, you get the rest.
The film is directed by “Shrek 2” helmer Kelly Asbury and written by “Mike Bassett: England Manager” scribes John R. Smith and Rob Sprackling, the film is due in theatres next year. It’s not exactly pushing boundaries and some of the English accents sound a little flat even for me, but if your looking for light entertainment then you’ve come to the right place! Check it out below:

The greatest love story ever told, starring…garden gnomes? In “Gnomeo & Juliet,” Shakespeare’s revered tale gets a comical, off-the-wall makeover. Directed by Kelly Asbury (co-director of “Shrek 2″) and showcasing both classic and original songs by Elton John, the film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet, who have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. The script was co-written by newcomers Rob Sprackling and John R. Smith.
Michael Caine, Jason Statham, Maggie Smith, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, Matt Lucas, Jim Cummings, Julie Walters, Richard Wilson and Ozzy Osbourne also provided their voices.
