Some habits die hard, and now Jack Black has reverted back to being a gamer, falling deep into Minecraft to prepare for his upcoming role as Steve in the animated adaption of the insanely popular game.
Jack Black recently explained to IGN, “An actor prepares so I have literally been exclusive to Minecraft for the last month and a half. All Minecraft all the time…Just Steve-in’ it up in the Minecraft universe, getting back into it – because I did play years ago because my kids were super duper into it and I wanted to speak their language. So I studied hard and I learned and I was getting really into it, building houses and tunneling around…Now I’m getting back into it and it’s pretty rad.” Now we’re wondering just how deep Black will get into the Super Mario Bros. franchise now that a sequel has been announced…...

Jared Hess’ Minecraft is leveling up again with new cast members Kate McKinnon and Jermaine Clement. In addition to McKinnon and Clement joining the cast, Domain is a co-financier of the feature adaptation of Minecraft.
Kate McKinnon and Jermaine Clement join previously announced cast members Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. Cameras will roll in New Zealand, though the plot remains a mystery. The Minecraft movie is based on the hugely successful video game franchise, which allows players to explore a blocky, procedurally generated 3D world. They can mine and extract raw materials to craft tools and build anything their imagination can conjure up. A few short years after it launched, Microsoft acquired Mojang Studios, the video game company behind Minecraft, for a swift $2.5 billion.

Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro has nominated 27 Latino-driven films for inclusion in the National Film Registry. Among the suggestions are films that brought Oscar nominations to Latino actors and artists, including Salma Hayek, as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in “Frida” (2002); Catalina Sandino Moreno, who portrayed a desperate undocumented pregnant immigrant in “Maria Full of Grace” (2004) and Demián Bichir, who played an undocumented worker in Los Angeles in “A Better Life” (2011). All were nominated for lead acting Oscars.
Other notable titles nominated by the congressman are Peter Sollett’s coming-of-age indie “Raising Victor Vargas,” Alfonso Arau’s romantic drama “Like Water for Chocolate (1992) and Darnell Martin’s “I Like It Like That” (1994), a story of a Puerto Rican family in the Bronx.

In a film that sings the praises of heavy metal music and reveres those who create it, “Metal Lords” stumbles in its ability to truly rock. Director Peter Sollett’s coming-of-age feature centered on two teen outcasts who form a hardcore metal band explores some fairly unexpected, dark recesses given its lighthearted, comedically-inclined premise. Sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll are on the set list, yet it plays too fast and loose, failing to achieve a good balance to make the chords reverberate louder. And just as it begins to get into its groove, the song abruptly ends.

There hasn’t been a “battle of the bands” since an unfortunate scrotal incident scarred many a teen not expecting nudity a few years back, but the mere mention of the possibility Dean Swanson (Sufe Bradshaw) decided to give her students another shot has Hunter Sylvester (Adrian Greensmith) salivating. The problem: he doesn’t have a band. Wanting one and having one are two different things and Dad’s (Brett Gelman) money can only get Hunter so far before a reality check proves necessary. That’s the one thing he refuses to accept, though. His love for metal and unyielding determination given as a sacrifice to the genre’s Satanic gods must manifest success into existence no matter how many enemies are made in the process.

It would probably be impossible to keep up with everything coming out in April, which includes everything from a Covid-themed comedy to a tale of Mormons and murder. It also includes a new film from one of Texas’s greatest filmmakers. Let’s start with that.

It centers on Boy (Skarsgård), a deaf mute with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, Boy escapes to the jungle and is trained by a mysterious shaman (Ruhian) to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death. Production of the Minecraft movie has encountered another setback as Warner Bros. delays nearly all of their major upcoming productions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the Minecraft movie was recently scheduled to be released on March 4, 2022. Now, though, Warner Bros. confirms that the movie’s release has been pushed back from that date and that no updated release date for the project is available at this time.
While it’s entirely possible that WB is just trying to find the best way to squeeze Minecraft into their now-chaotic production schedule, we wouldn’t be surprised if they simply don’t know what the status of the project is and what a realistic timeframe for its release looks like.
After all, the production of the Minecraft movie has been chaotic so far. The original plan was for Shawn Levy to direct a Jason Fuchs-written...

The feature film version of Minecraft has been in development for some time already. Both Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) were attached to direct it at different points before Peter Sollett was hired to take it on.
Now the official website for the film has announced that the movie is moving forward and that it has a new release date of March 4th, 2022, so we are going to have to wait a good amount of time before we see it. Will Minecraft even still be popular in 2022!? Probably.

Dig this: Warner Bros has set date for the theatrical debut of its Minecraft film — and the game’s obsessed young fans likely won’t be happy. The movie will hit megaplexes on March 4, 2022.
Warners didn’t offer any new details about Minecraft, which has Peter Sollett attached as writer-director. The studio acquired rights and announced the film back in October 2014, then hot off its success with The Lego Movie. It originally had said in June 2017 that the vidgame adaptation would be released May 24, 2019. Now the pick — er, pic will see the dark of theaters nearly three years later.
As of now, Minecraft has that weekend to itself.
Microsoft paid $2.5 billion to acquire Mojang, the small Swedish company behind the popular PC game and app, in September 2014. The game uses decidedly lo-fi, Lego-like graphics but provides a rich and addictive experience. It allows a player to create their own world,...

March can be a long month, and that’s especially true for cinephiles. Wedged between the Oscars and the start of the summer movie season (which now begins sometime in April), the tail-end of winter can feel like the deepest of doldrums on the annual movie calendar. Fortunately, Netflix is doing what it can to sustain its subscribers from now until spring.
This month’s new additions to the company’s streaming library offer a little something for everyone, from the soaring acrobatics of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” to the chilled mysteries of Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone,” and the heartbreaking drama of Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation.” March’s Netflix Originals include Chiwetel Ejiofor’s directorial debut, Lukas Dhont’s controversial “Girl,” and the star-studded beefcake spectacle of “Triple Frontier.” “Music and Lyrics” and “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” join the internet’s deepest stable of 21st century rom-coms,...

It appears that the long-in-development “Minecraft” movie is moving ahead once again. This time, the project has a new director at the helm, and Warner Bros. is hoping the third time is a charm.
Variety is reporting that director Peter Sollett has signed on to direct the highly-anticipated video game adaptation. For those that don’t follow video games (and don’t have a child under the age of 12), “Minecraft” is a game that allows users to create basically anything they want in a fictional world that’s built on the style of older, pixelated games.

Peter Sollett has been brought on to write and direct Warner Bros.’ long-anticipated film adaptation of the popular video game “Minecraft.”
The pic will be produced by Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Jon Berg. Jill Messick, who died last February, is also still credited as a producer. The video game developer that released the game, Mojang, is also on board as a producer. Jon Spaihts will executive produce.
