Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

This Tuesday, Warner Bros. is releasing the “ultimate cut” of “Watchmen,” a 5-disc box set intended to do the graphic novel justice–something that writer Alan Moore would be (but still isn’t) proud of. The feature included is an hour longer than the theatrical release, and there are plenty of bonuses to be seen. Go through it all with me, one disc at a time, after the jump.
Disc One: The “Ultimate” Cut
I’m among the select group of people who loved both the graphic novel and Zack Snyder’s film “Watchmen” when it released in March. And though I agree the book trumps the film, I am a tremendous fan of both for different reasons.
Thus as expected, this “ultimate cut” of the film is pretty special for a fanboy like myself. It’s the director’s cut of the film with all the side stories thrown »

Ever since Watchmen came out we’ve heard tale of an “ultimate cut” that would offer fans the Total Watchmen experience, including the full-length director’s cut of the movie, with the added bonus of having animated segments from the Tales of the Black Freighter tie-in film spliced in with the live-action footage, much in the same vein as was done in the original Watchmen graphic novel.
Back in July we gave you some early details about the extras Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut would offer, but now you can find out for yourself as this super-special edition is slated to hit stores everywhere next week!
Amazon is pre-selling both the DVD and Blu-ray versions of Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut for around $30. You can take advantage of that low price by going Here. As for what special features the new edition(s) will offer, check out this break down: »

I spoke to director Terry Gilliam yesterday, and while our interview will run much closer to the Christmas Day release date of his newest film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, I couldn't help but ask him about Watchmen. Gilliam twice attempted to mount Watchmen for the screen (even going so far as to pitch it as a television miniseries) but could never make it work, so I was curious what he thought of Zack Snyder's theatrical adaptation of the graphic novel, which came out earlier this year. »

Finally! Our first real look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has arrived in the form of this HD trailer courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes. Based on the popular video game series which made it big with the release of Sands of Time back in 2003 and its pair of sequels the following two years, the video game adaptation is hoped to help bring a change to a movie genre that has traditionally suffered from low quality movies based on known video game franchises.
Prince of Persia stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan (unnamed in the video game) as he tries save the world using the an ancient time-manipulating weapon and the help of a foe/love-interest.
Check out the action-packed and visually appealing trailer after the jump.
For those unfamiliar with the story of the movie, here’s the synopsis:

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog have it on good authority that grand-old-thespian (Sir) Anthony Hopkins has been cast as Chris Hemsworth's father in Thor. The role will be the latest in a long-line of bearded old men that this one-time actor has played in recent years.
Other British-thespian Kenneth Branagh's film will start shooting in the new year and will tell the story of the god of thunder as a 'powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war'... as punishmlent for his careless actions Thor is bannished from the heavenly realm to Earth where he must live amongst humans and learn how to become a true hero by facing down the dark invasion force of his nemesis Asgard.
Tell us what you reckon of Hopkins playing Odin, and if you have an opinion on whether Branagh's got the directorial chops to better the bar »

Film adaptations of comic book visionary Frank Miller's 300 and Sin City graphic novels have generated more than $280 million at the box office, so it's not surprising that more of Miller's ideas will be coming to the big screen soon.
Back in June, director Zack Snyder announced his interest in making a sequel or prequel to 300, and in September actor Clive Owen, who played Dwight in Sin City, announced that a sequel to Sin City might be in the works. Also in September, it was announced that Sylvain White might be directing a 3-D adaptation of Miller's Ronin graphic novel.
Now, there's confirmation from producer Stephen L'Heureux of Solipsist Films that production on Sin City 2 will begin in late 2010 from an original script by Miller, who will co-direct with Robert Rodriguez. In a recent interview with Mania, L'Heureux also announced that another of Miller's graphic novels, Hard Boiled, is being developed for the screen. »

For most of you, Max Brooks needs no introduction. He wrote the novel "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War," which is currently on the road to getting a big screen adaptation with Marc Forster directing a script from Matthew Michael Carnahan.
Brooks was kind enough to take some time to chat with me a few weeks ago while he was promoting the Starz Inside documentary, "Zombiemania," which you can catch replays of this week (check your local listings for times). During the interview, I had to ask for a kickass zombie movies list to run with this week's special Halloween coverage. Brooks was more than happy to oblige, and he delivered quite a list. The last one in particular blew my mind, and I welcome anyone who's seen it to write in their reviews in the comments section below or @MTVMoviesBlog on Twitter.

Before "The Dark Knight," many fans wondered how Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker in Tim Burton's "Batman" could ever be topped, least of all by the seemingly unnatural choice of Heath Ledger. But if you believe one certain rumor, Nicholson almost lost the part to another actor—none other than Willem Dafoe.
Dafoe's IMDb page harbors a curious bit of "trivia," which states that the actor was considered for the Clown Prince of Crime in the Burton-directed "Batman." MTV News went straight to Dafoe for official word on the rumor, and while the actor said he was never considered for the Joker role, he did have an early attachment to the 1989 film.
"Very early, they talked to me about playing Batman," Dafoe told MTV News.
In Burton's "Batman," Bruce Wayne was played by actor Michael Keaton, who was viewed as an unconventional pick for the role—but just like Ledger as Joker, »

Actress Malin Akerman's career has been on an upward trajectory since her breakout role on the short-lived Lisa Kudrow series The Comeback. Since then, Akerman has gone psycho in The Heartbreak Kid with Ben Stiller, played a superhero in Zack Snyder's Watchmen, and is currently starring in one of this year's biggest comedy hits, Couples Retreat.
In the October issue of 944 magazine, Akerman talked about some of her upcoming projects and discussed the price of fame. For her next film, she's taking a break from comedy for a dramatic role.
Yes, The Bang Bang Club — it's based on a true story of two photojournalists' journey through the end of Apartheid — I play the photo editor. The story's incredible and it's really raw. We used a lot of locals and shot in all the same places where things happened.

Abbie Cornish has made her mark in edgy, unconventional films such "Candy" and "Stop-Loss," but the 27-year-old Aussie is finding 2009 is turning into her biggest year yet. She's already drawing raves for her work in Jane Campion's "Bright Star" (more on that later), but she's currently spending her days playing Sweatpea in Zack Snyder's highly anticipated new epic "Sucker Punch." Cornish jumped on the phone earlier today to discuss "Bright Star," but it was her enthusiasm for "Punch" which was most apparent. While doing press for Bright Star, HitFix was able to get actress Abbie Cornish to dish some dirt on the upcoming Zack Snyder film Sucker Punch, which began shooting in Vancouver last month. As you know already, Snyder has called the film "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns", a 1950's-period action movie which tells the story of a girl named Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While imprisoned, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain. In this fantasy world, where she needs to steal five objects to help her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. So what juicy tidbits did Cornish spill? Details after the jump. Cornish says Snyder's latest is "seriously, six films in one almost," revealed that she carries "a good shot gun, »

The guys from The Metal Den says they have the first poster art for the upcoming “Heavy Metal” movie, drawn by artist Raymond Swanland. It looks very heavy. And metal. Heavy metal-ish, if you will. Fincher and James Cameron are going to be Co-Executive Producers on the film. The movie will be split into segments. Fincher will direct one. Cameron will direct one. Zack Snyder is going to direct one and Gore Verbinski is going to. Mark Osborne and Jack Black from Tenacious D are going to do a comedy segment for the film. The Metal Den says the movie is due out in 2010, but IMDb.com has the more practical 2012 as a possible release date. »

Jim Sturgess, last seen onscreen in the indie drama Crossing Over, has joined Kirsten Dunst to star in Upside Down, a sci-fi film set up at Onyx Films. According to Variety, Upside Down will have a Romeo and Juliet vibe.
Cinematographer Juan Diego Solanas wrote the script and will be directing the film. Shooting is reportedly set to begin in February in Montreal. If so, this may be a tight squeeze for Dunst who will be starting work on Spider-Man 4 in March, if the fourth Spider-Man movie continues on its current schedule.
Dunst recently wrapped work on All Good Things with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Ryan Gosling and based on an unsolved New York murder case. Sturgess just completed work on Peter Weir's The Way Back, a fact-based drama set in Siberia. Sturgess is also part of the voice cast of Zack Snyder's first animated film, Guardians of Ga'Hoole, »

Jackie Earle Haley received his passport to geekdom when he played the masked anti-hero Rorschach in Zack Snyder's adaption of the Watchmen graphic novel.
Since then he has been cast as the new Freddie Krueger in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, following lobbying by fans.
And in the latest rumour, Ain't It Cool News recently reported that the 48-year-old actor was playing supervillain Sinestro in the Warner Bros superhero flick Green Lantern, which will star Ryan Reynolds.
It's surprising because this time Haley has not suggested for the role by the fan community. Most have named Hugo Weaving and Jason Isaacs as their preferred choices for the character, whose comic book look was modelled on the late British actor David Niven.
So what does Haley make of this? Has he been cast? If not, would he play the part?
He says it's the first he's heard about being cast as Sinestro, »

Despite receiving less-than-stellar reviews, the new thriller starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx took the #2 spot at the box office this past weekend, bringing in more than $20 million. According to Butler, who also produced Law Abiding Citizen, a last-minute change ended up making for a very different movie.
Law Abiding Citizen tells the story of a father (Butler) who seeks violent revenge against the criminals who murdered his family and the district attorney (Foxx) who lets them off easy. Butler, who was initially going to play the D.A., became fascinated with exploring the character arc of the father and switched roles with Foxx.
Initially, I was playing the prosecutor and just before the movie started, I swapped over because I had such a fascination with him. But it was always my argument and my purpose that at a certain point in the movie, Clyde turns, that he goes too far, »

Following confirmation about its production that has been pulled out of Australia, "Green Lantern" is hit with a casting rumor. Ain't It Cool News (AICN) has come up with the story that the lead villain in this adaptation of the DC Comics' superhero may well be portrayed by Jackie Earle Haley.
According to Harry Knowles of AICN, someone "working on the film" claimed that the new Freddy Krueger of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is on top of the actors list considered for the part of Sinestro. The scooper reportedly also spoiled that Superman "will be making a cameo," adding that "all depends upon how... other DC things go."
Sinestro is the former mentor of Hal Jordan and the arch-nemesis of the entire Green Lantern Corps. He was banished from the Corps after using the power of the Green Lantern to instill fear rather than combat it. In the casting call, »

When Jon Favreau said he would not be available to direct "The Avengers" for Marvel, he opened the doors for speculation about who would be behind the camera.
Favreau's "Iron Man" breathed life into the current wave of Marvel films culminating in 2012's gigantic crossover event, but someone else will have to step in to bring his storyline together with "The Incredible Hulk," "The First Avenger: Captain America" and "Thor."
Here are five directors who might be able to pull it off and make the "Avengers" movie fans want to see.
Zack Snyder: Was "Watchmen" Snyder's last word in superhero movies? Its box office performance may have made that debatable, but its visual presentation was spectacular. Snyder's name sits on a short list including Brett Ratner and Bryan Singer who have tackled superhero team movies in recent years, and his name comes at the top right now.

'It gave Spike [Jonze] room to create and to try to find something new,' Forest Whitaker says of director collaborating with Maurice Sendak.

Hollywood history is overflowing with sad tales of storytellers unwilling or unable to share their vision with someone else. And when you look back on barely speaking "collaborators" like Mark Steven Johnson and John Irving ("Simon Birch"), Tom Clancy and Phillip Noyce ("Patriot Games") or Zack Snyder and Alan Moore ("Watchmen"), it's no wonder that such unusually matched folks had trouble finding common ground. Much like the classic children's tale "Where the Wild Things Are," however, the behind-the-scenes story of Maurice Sendak and Spike Jonze had a happy ending.
When now-81-year-old Sendak originally published his beloved tale of a boy named Max and his adventures, it »
