Serial will be back in March with its long-awaited fourth season. The popular podcast will return for a nine-episode fourth season on March 28, with a focus on Guantanamo.
The announcement was made today by Serial host Sarah Koenig, Julie Snyder and Dana Chivvis at On Air Fest in Brooklyn, an annual event that explores the art of sound and storytelling, during a session moderated by Pj Vogt (Search Engine).
The first two episodes launch on Thursday, March 28, with episodes released weekly after that.
In Season 4, Koenig and Chivvis tell the history of Guantanamo through the personal stories of those on the ground.
This year also marks Serial’s 10th anniversary.
“It’s fitting that this show is coming out on Serial’s 10th anniversary, because we’ve been trying to make a show about Guantanamo for almost a decade,” said Koenig. “Dana and I tried for years to figure out...

The New York Times and Serial Productions today announced The Retrievals, a new five-part podcast hosted by author and “This American Life” editor Susan Burton. Listeners can subscribe to “The Retrievals” and listen to the trailer now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and wherever podcasts are available. The first episode will be available on Thursday, June 29, with episodes released weekly after that.

Fans of Celine Dion gathered outside the offices of Rolling Stone on Friday afternoon to protest the superstar vocalist’s exclusion from our recent list of The 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
The small but vociferous cadre of Dion devotees sang and shouted and held signs that read “How Can You Forget Celine?”, “The Power of Celine,” “Justice for Celine,” “Celine Is No Longer By Herself,” and “I Drove All Night to Be Here!” Our personal favorite, however, was definitely “Rolling Stone Is Stoned,” which also was a popular chant in-between songs.

The team behind podcast breakouts Serial and S-Town have set their latest audio project – a podcast series about an alleged conspiracy to introduce an Islamist agenda into schools in the UK.
Serial Productions, which was acquired by The New York Times Company in 2020, is producing The Trojan Horse Affair with host Brian Reed, who was behind Serial follow-up S-Town, and Hamza Syed, a doctor-turned-reporter.
The pair are investigating a mystery at the heart of a scandal that emerged in the UK in 2013.
When a strange letter kicked off a national panic in Britain, Syed was skeptical. The letter appeared to be a secret communique between Islamic extremists who’d been infiltrating the city schools in Birmingham – Syed’s hometown – in a supposed plot called Operation Trojan Horse. The letter led to a crackdown on Muslim educators and harsh new British counterterrorism measures.
But Syed suspected the public had been misled...

The team behind the widely-popular Serial podcast will take on election fraud with the limited audio series The Improvement Association.
Launching Tuesday, April 13, The Improvement Association is a five-part series that features host, reporter and This American Life producer Zoe Chace as she travels to Bladen County, North Carolina to investigate the power of election fraud allegations. In 2019, Bladen County, North Carolina, made national headlines, becoming one of the few cases in modern history where a congressional race was voided due to fraud. The results of the election were thrown out because of evidence the winner’s campaign had tampered with absentee ballots.
But according to some Bladen County locals, the authorities got it all wrong. For at least a decade, people in this rural county have been pointing the finger at Horace Munn, the leader of a powerful Black advocacy group called the Bladen County Improvement Association Pac, accusing...

Adam McKay and Todd Schulman will executive produce via Hyperobject Industries, which is currently under a first-look deal with HBO. Chana Joffe-Walt, Julie Snyder, Alissa Shipp, and Sarah Koenig of Serial Productions will also executive produce along with Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry of 3 Arts Entertainment.

The beginning of “Serial” Season 3, which focuses on daily life within a Cleveland courthouse, opens like the beginning of a novel. Only, instead of a riveting crime yarn introducing the audience to hardscrabble detectives and unsolved murders, it starts with a bunch of buildings. That the intro is concerned with spatial architecture just as much as the people involved in what goes on inside them is at once a signal that Season 3 is a bit of a departure for the show, but one that still maintains the podcast’s impeccable attention to detail.
Instead of following a single crime or unexplained decision as they did in their inaugural two collections of episodes, this next batch of stories from “Serial” is focused more on an institution. Embedding in that Cleveland courthouse, the aim of this season is to present a representative sample of how our current American judicial system functions. Some...

Danish director Gustav Möller, in Sarajevo with his international festival hit “The Guilty,” is set to continue his genre-busting work with a new project in development after turning down an offer to direct a remake of his debut film.
“The Guilty” is a taut thriller about a police dispatcher, played by Jakob Cedergren, trying to help a kidnapped woman after receiving her emergency call. The pic has racked up a slew of awards on the international circuit since premiering at Sundance earlier this year and made a major splash at the Sarajevo Film Festival, where it received a rousing reception on Saturday.
Möller told Variety that there has been a lot of interest from around the world for remake rights to the film. But he himself has no interest in revisiting the “The Guilty.”
“I’ve been asked about remaking it myself in another language – you can guess which one...

Jeff Whitty, one of the creators of the Tony-winning musical Avenue Q, will write Zora for Warner Bros. Pictures and Plan B. The true story of Zora Colakovic first appeared on Ira Glass' National Public Radio show "This American Life." Colakovic was a young woman who, more than anything else, wanted to be a CIA agent. She trained herself intellectually and physically only to be rejected by the agency. Shattered, she rebuilt herself into a formidable bounty hunter. Glass and Julie Snyder will take producing credits. Courtenay Valenti is overseeing for Warners. The popular Avenue Q, which features sexually active puppets and racy humor, was the upset winner at this year's Tonys. It won for best musical, best original score and best book of a musical, which Whitty wrote. The playwright's other credits include The Plank Project, Suicide Weather and The Hiding Place. Whitty is repped by WMA.
