Tiger Woods said Monday that his sponsorship relationship with Nike has ended, bringing to a close a 27-year partnership that teamed golf’s and the sports world’s biggest athlete with the biggest athletic brand.
The partnership began when Woods turned pro at the age of 20. For Nike, it was perhaps the most prominent teaming with an athlete apart from the company’s even longer association with Michael Jordan.
In exchange for the roughly $500 million it paid to Woods, Nike benefited from billions in sales of its golf apparel and gear. The swoosh-emblazoned red shirt and black cap that Woods wore during climactic Sunday rounds of dozens of championships gave Nike untold extra ad impressions.
The partnership faced a major test in 2009 when a flurry of reports about Woods seeing women other than his then-wife, Elin, put the golfer under a harsh spotlight. While AT&T and others bailed and Woods...

Eddie Merrins, the gentlemanly golf pro at the Bel-Air Country Club who taught the game to the likes of Bing Crosby, Ringo Starr, George C. Scott, Dean Martin, Celine Dion and Jack Nicholson, has died. He was 91.
Merrins died Wednesday after a long illness, according to UCLA, where he coached for 14 years. His son Michael had launched a GoFundMe campaign this year to help the family with expenses.
Nicknamed “The Little Pro,” the 5-foot-7 Mississippi native played on the PGA Tour before serving as Bel-Air’s head pro from 1962 until he was asked to step aside in 2003. However, he remained a beloved fixture at the fabled club as pro emeritus in a jacket/sweater, tie and white driving cap.
Remarkably, Bel Air, which opened in 1925, has had only three head pros: Joe Novak, Merrins and now Dave Podas.
Inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame in 2009, Merrins arranged for Jack Nicklaus to meet Tiger Woods,...

Whether you're a golf fan or not, we're willing to hedge a bet that you - like most people - can agree that pro-golfer and dad of two Tiger Woods is a household name. As of 2023, Woods is tied for first with Sam Snead for PGA Tour wins among all golfers and has also been the face of prominent athletic brands like Nike in the past. While Woods is known for holding numerous records and is regarded as one of the best golfers in the history of the sport, not every fan might be up to date on his family life. While married to his ex-wife, supermodel Elin Nordegren, between 2004 and 2010, they welcomed two children: Sam and Charlie.
Woods and Nordegren split in 2010, but Woods later said he wanted to be honest with his kids about what happened. "I've taken the initiative with the kids, and told them up front,...

What is it about the game of golf that makes good cinema? We can barely keep our eyes open during the PGA Tour. Its tranquil vibes are more relaxing than a glass of warm milk. And we can't name but a handful of players: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, er... Is there a famous "Dave" in there? Still, we could pop in and enjoy at least a dozen films about the sport at a moment's notice on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There's something majestic about the luscious greens, the stillness of the crowd, the whispered play-by-play, and the distant thwack of a ball that translates to the big screen.
Or maybe it's the class struggle, as golf is seen as a gentleman's sport designed for the wealthy. A round of golf at Pebble Beach will set you back nearly 600! Or perhaps we're intoxicated by the psychology of the game,...

Speaking to the media for the first time since his car crash last February, Tiger Woods declined to address details of the accident but affirmed he is unlikely to return to full-time pro golf.
“As far as playing at the tour level, I don’t know when that’s going to happen,” Woods said. “I’ll play a round here and there.”
During the 38-minute news conference (watch it below) at the Hero World Challenge, a PGA Tour stop in the Bahamas, Woods repeatedly emphasized the pain and difficulty of his recovery. Even once he started chipping and putting in the back yard, he asked workers at his house to fill the hole with sand so he wouldn’t have to bend over as far to retrieve the ball. The comments from Woods built on an interview released Monday by Golf Digest, in which he declared he would never return to full-time pro golf.

The zany Lewis found an ideal straight man in crooner Dean Martin in 1945. They took their stage act to radio, then television, and then to film, where they appeared together 17 times. A haunted castle, a beautiful ghost and a menacing zombie gave Lewis plenty of comedy ammo in 1953’s “Scared Stiff.” Golf pros of the era Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Julius Boros joined Martin and Lewis in “The Caddy,” which also featured the Dean Martin classic song “That’s Amore.” Don’t let the title “Artists and Models” fool you. Shirley MacLaine co-starred in this 1955 gem about a.

Chicago – I rage quit “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14’” multiple times. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, and I think the franchise has put out quality games in the past, but when it came to putting in this year’s edition, it wasn’t uncommon for me to miss my hit window, short my putt, stand up, turn my Xbox 360 off, and storm outside in search of an adorable kitten to boss around. I mean, golfing has always been a frustrating experience - but in real life if you get a cart, a nice day, five or six (or nine) brews in the back of that cart, and some good friends, you’ll very likely have yourself a quality afternoon where you don’t care about what your stroke count was and how many holes you 9-putted.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational could very well be called the Tiger Woods Invitational, because Woods has has won the Orlando tournament seven times over the course of his career. If he manages to win it this weekend, it will tie him with Sam Snead as the only players to win a PGA Tour event eight times. Beginning today with coverage on Golf Channel (details are below), the Arnold Palmer Invitational takes place at the 7,419-yard, par-72 Bay Hill Club and Lodge. Palmer said in a press conference this week that the course is in great shape and that the set-up [...]...
