Trick 'r Treat (2009)

15 October 2009 1:52 PM, PDT | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Written and directed by Michael Dougherty

Featuring Anna Paquin, Tahmoh Penikett, Rochelle Aytes, Dylan Baker, Lauren Lee Smith, Quinn Lord, Brett Kelly, Moneca Delain, Isabelle Deluce, Leslie Bibb, Jean-Luc Bilodeau

Review by Lis Fies

Warner Brothers apparently had no idea what a rare and wonderful cash cow it had acquired in Trick r' Treat, and made the totally bone-headed decision of releasing this stellar movie straight to DVD instead of giving it what would have been a smashingly lucrative theatrical release supplanting tired warhorse Saw this Halloween season. Not that Hollywood is known for understanding or respecting thriller/horror material and its fans, but their throwaway treatment of Trick 'r Treat is shockingly dumb even for them...

To add insult to injury, they've printed a woefully inadequate amount of DVDs to supply the awesome word of mouth, to the point that it's difficult to find a copy to buy or rent anywhere except in Blu-ray. »

Trick ‘r Treat Director Considering a Sequel

8 October 2009 6:55 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Michael Dougherty, the writer/director of the long-delayed Trick ‘r Treat, has been doing press interviews to promote the release of the cult horror film.  After three years of toiling through development at Warner Bros, the movie finally hit DVD shelves on Tuesday, and it’s definitely worth a look.

The R-rated movie is an anthology of four twisted and interwoven Halloween stories.  I won’t give anything away, but they’re the kind of tales you’d tell during an eerie night around a campfire or while holding a flashlight under your chin.  Dougherty shows them with such precision and clever direction that on film it’s just creepy and fun.

If you’ve had the chance to see it already, you’re probably wondering why WB dumped it to DVD without giving it at a chance in theaters.  I wish I could tell you.  It’s cast includes “True Blood” star Anna Paquin, »

Trick 'r Treat - DVD Review

7 October 2009 10:28 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

More of a treat than a trick, this horror anthology film follows several stories on Halloween night. It is Halloween night and many have plans of a spooky kind. Emma (Leslie Bibb) ignores an ancient tradition of Halloween and pays dearly. Principal Steven Wilkins (Dylan Baker) has to have a talk with one of his troubled students (Brent Kelly) before beginning his questionable Halloween activities. Laurie (Anna Paquin) is a shy girl and needs to find a date if she is to attend a party with her friends Danielle (Lauren Lee Smith), Janet (Moneca Delain), and Maria (Rochelle Aytes), but she has to walk through the dark woods to get to the party. Trick R Treat Exclusive Interviews

5 October 2009 7:19 PM, PDT | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Trick 'r Treat received great reviews, however it never got a theatrical release. But now horror fans can check it out on DVD as it finally hits stores nearly three years after it was filmed. Trick 'r Treat marks X2 and Superman Returns screenwriter Michael Dougherty's feature film directorial debut and features four interwoven stories all taking place on Halloween.

A few months back I got the chance to talk to Dougherty and some of his cast (not Anna Paquin as she was busy with True Blood at the time) about working on the creepy thriller and the film's debut on DVD:

CSI Recap, Review & Discussion

24 September 2009 9:53 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Tonight was the premiere episode of CSI’s 10th season. At the end of last season, we saw two things: Langston volunteering at a hospital in his spare time - and him having to use, for the first time, deadly force to kill someone. Let’s see where this new season picks up and what, if any, ramifications it has had on him and what the entire team has been up to.

My interest is more than a little piqued for this premiere episode as we see the return of Sarah. The episode descriptions promise that they welcome her return as they become tighter to investigate the death of a famous young actress killed in a dubious traffic collision.

As with my previous CSI recap, review and discussion, I’m warning you now that I’m going to spoil everything. I’ll even spoil the commercials for you (Target, Pepsi). See, »

8 September 2009 10:52 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” jumps from the first season to the most recent when it comes to Blu-Ray releases of one of the most successful and beloved shows of the ’00s. It’s only a matter of time before the seven seasons in-between are filled-in but, until then, you can watch the beginning and the end of the William Petersen era on “CSI” with the recent release of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - The Ninth Season”.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 With six discs, over 17 hours of murder mystery mayhem, and hours of special features, the ninth season of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” is a great Blu-Ray release to catch up before the tenth season of the flagship show of a franchise that shows few signs of slowing down.

Interview with Liz Vassey

7 September 2009 9:31 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Liz Vassey won a Daytime Emmy at the tender age of 18, thus throwing her already busy acting career into overdrive. With gigs ranging from Beverly Hills 90210 to Tru Calling, the stunning brunette cites a brief cameo on Joss Whedon's internet musical, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog as one of her most cherished roles.

These days, when Vassey isn't peering at DNA patterns as Wendy, the forensic technician on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, she's hoping for a return to musical theater and touting her ta-ta's for a very good cause.

AfterEllen: How are things on CSI? What's in store for Wendy Simms this season?

Liz Vassey: I don't really know, but I'd love for her to go out in the field more. In one episode, I went out in the field for the first time with Laurence Fishburne. He's just fantastic and could not be nicer. And I got to swab John Schneider, »

Official Promo of 'CSI: Las Vegas' Season 10

18 August 2009 11:31 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Hailed as TV's No. 1 drama, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" is giving the reasons why it claims such title through the new season 10 promo. Called "A few words about CSI", it reminds viewers how "ground-breaking", "jaw-dropping" and "pulse-pounding" the show can be and expects them to wait for "what's next?".

The first and original CSI will return on September 24, no longer featuring its forefather William Petersen aka Gil Grissom. He has been replaced in the last season by Laurence Fishburne who plays Dr. Raymond Langston.

Although she appears in the new promo, Riley Adams (Lauren Lee Smith) will also be absent starting this season because "the character never quite found its footing in terms of the rest of the gang." The show, however, is bringing back Jorja Fox to reprise her role as Sara Sidle.

Furthermore, TV Guide quoted a CBS rep as saying that Nick (George Eads) will get a promotion in the new season. »

Lauren Lee Smith is leaving Las Vegas

31 July 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

No soup for you, CSI. The hit crime drama is parting ways with the Lauren Lee Smith, the artist formerly known as the Soup Chef. Lauren joined the show last season as new CSI Riley Adams. But now, just as original cast member Jorja Fox is set to return for five episodes, Lauren is shown to door. Bummer.

The new season will start with Riley already gone, so Lauren won’t have a chance to say goodbye on screen. Executive producer Naren Shankar confirmed the new to TVGuideMagazine.com earlier this week saying:

It was an issue of how we were feeling the ensemble was working. When we brought in the character of Riley, it got lost in the shuffle a little bit because we had lost Warrick, we had lost Sara, and then in the middle of last season Grissom finally left. I think, as a result, the character »

CSI: Sara and Grissom "Absolutely Ended Up Together"

29 July 2009 12:45 AM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Just when I think we've heard enough about the developments on CSI over the past week--Jorja Fox arriving for five episodes, and Lauren Lee Smith leaving entirely--then comes more.  Maybe you've already heard some of these things, but I shall point your attention to this article's title, somewhere up there.  Yeah, exactly.

Executive producers Carol Mendelsohn and Naren Shankar talked to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello, and discussed a little bit more about Sara Sidle's return to the Las Vegas lab for the tenth season of the crime drama.  And, well, it does clear a few things up.  Minor spoilers are up ahead, so if you don't want them, then stay away. »

'CSI': As Sara Re-Enters, Riley Leaves

28 July 2009 1:17 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

One person in, another is out. While Jorja Fox is welcomed back as Sara Sidle on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", an actor has to be let go because the character is not working for the whole show. The unfortunate one would be Lauren Lee Smith aka Riley Adams, the crime investigator who joined the unit in season 9.

Executive producer Naren Shankar confirmed the elimination through TV Guide Magazine, specifying that Riley will not return for the 10th season. "It was an issue of how we were feeling the ensemble was working," he reasoned. "When we brought in the character of Riley, it got lost in the shuffle a little bit because we had lost Warrick, we had lost Sara, and then in the middle of last season Grissom finally left. I think, as a result, the character never quite found its footing in terms of the rest of the gang. »

CSI: Sara Gets Five Episodes As Riley Leaves The Lab

I guess people didn't really warm to Riley Adams after all.

Lauren Lee Smith is not going to be back for the tenth season of CSI, executive producer Naren Shankar told TV Guide Magazine.  And, much like the departure of Kim Delaney on her first season in CSI: Miami, it's because the character just wasn't working well as everyone had expected. »

Jorja Fox sidles back to "CSI" for several episodes

20 July 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Oh, Sara Sidle. CSI just can’t quit you. Original series actress Jorja Fox will return for five episodes in the new season of the hit crime drama.

Jorja left the show in its eight season, but returned a few times last year in its ninth season for guest appearances. When we last saw Sara, she was caught in an embrace with her bearded boyfriend Gil Grissom, who had left the lab behind for good to meet her in the jungle.

While I don’t want to get into the great awww or ewww debate when it comes to the Gil and Sara relationship, I will say that it’ll be nice to see Jorja back on my TV. The actress, with her serious scowl and gap-toothed smile, was always one of my favorites on the show.

The word is that Sara will be back without Gil. This happily clears »
