It’s truly a measure of the pandemic that the 19th annual Ves Awards (to be held virtually on April 6) was dominated by Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” with 13 nominations (topped by photoreal episode). Like the Oscar shortlist, there was an absence of big budget, VFX-intensive studio films. But, truth be told, Season 2 of Jon Favreau’s engaging “Star Wars” bounty hunter series offered the industry’s most innovative tech (wrapped around Industrial Light & Magic’s improved StageCraft virtual production system).
Pixar’s “Soul” was the top animation contender with five nominations, while the feature competition was split between “Project Power,” the Netflix superhero film, Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” (which streamed on HBO Max), and Disney’s live-action “Mulan” (which streamed on Disney+), each garnering three nominations.

Robin Murray | The Graduate and Souvenir reviews | Oil price | Miliband brothers | Welsh crosswords
Many people owe much to the vision and prodigious industry of Robin Murray (Obituaries, 19 June). Unmentioned was his excellent contribution to the co-operative movement, especially his report for Co-ops UK, Co-operation in the Age of Google, and his superb contribution as a member of the Welsh government’s co-operative and mutuals commission.

• In reviewing The Graduate (Film and Music, 23 June), a film about the relationship between an older woman and a 21-year-old man, Peter Bradshaw says “the element of predatory abuse is inescapable”. On the same page, Benjamin Lee, reviewing Souvenir, a film about a relationship between an older woman and a 21-year-old man, says “it is refreshing to see her (Isabelle Huppert) in a romance with a 21-year-old without anyone making a point of their age difference.” Well, that’s clear then.

After a relatively competitive bidding war between several studios, Sony has acquired the rights to adapt Scott McCloud’s acclaimed graphic novel The Sculptor.
And for good reason, McCloud is somewhat of a legend in the medium of comic books, having picked up multiple awards for his Understanding Comics and Making Comics not to mention the creation of comic series Zot! in the 80s. So, given that The Sculptor represents the writer’s first work of fiction in almost twenty years, it was almost inevitable that studios would stand up and take notice.
In essence, McCloud’s latest work revolves around a man who makes a deal with the Devil in order to become a world-famous sculptor for exactly 200 days. No more, no less. After that window of time expires, the character will meet his demise but when he falls in love with the girl of his dreams, complications soon...

Sony Pictures has acquired the film rights to Scott McCloud's The Sculptor.
The cartoonist and comics scholar's long-awaited new book will be coming to the big screen.
Sony won the rights after what The Hollywood Reporter claims was some competition to secure the rights.
The Sculptor centres around struggling young artist David Smith who makes a deal with Death. He is given incredible sculpting powers but only 200 days to live.
But when he meets and falls in love with a young woman, he begins to question his approach to his art and his life. And all the while, his time is slipping away.
The book is the first comics project from McCloud - who is best known as the creator of Understanding Comics - since 1998's The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln. It is published by SelfMadeHero in the UK and First Second in the Us.

Shares for the TV station group are down about 6.6% this morning after it missed Q4 earnings estimates, bringing its year-to-date stock performance to -27.2%. But execs urged analysts not to fret about its prospects — including if broadcasters fail to persuade the U.S. Supreme Court that Aereo infringes on their copyrights. For example, networks probably wouldn’t follow through on threats to restrict their prime time shows to pay TV if justices say that the streaming service can pick up local broadcasters’ over-the-air signals without paying a license fee. “The truth of the matter is that the amount of support that we provide as affiliates to the network programming is significant, especially with the amount of local programming that we supply, news production, and syndicated product that we purchase,” Sinclair CEO David Smith says. The variation in network ratings in different markets “demonstrates the importance of local branding to the networks and to their viewing.

Nashville, Tenn. — Carrie Underwood has found her voice on Twitter.
The country music star and former "American Idol" champion admitted 3 1/2 years ago she was afraid to join Twitter, but since deciding to take the leap in 2011 she's embraced the social media tool in ways that go beyond fan engagement. Recently she used Twitter to oppose the "Ag Gag" bill in Tennessee, reaching out directly to Gov. Bill Haslam with a boldly worded message saying if he signed it "he needs to expect me at his front door."
It was the first time she's taken a political stand so publicly, and it seemed to have an impact. Haslam contacted Underwood to discuss the issue and went on to veto the bill that opponents claimed would have stopped investigation into animal abuse on farms.
"He really just wanted to hear everybody's point of view, which I really respected," Underwood said in a recent interview.

That’s 100 more than last year, and part of an easing of a longstanding cap on the number of new members allowed to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences each year.
AMPAS usually adds between 130 and 180 new members, replacing those who have quit or passed away. The membership now stands around 6,000.
Jason Bateman, Jennifer Lopez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emmanuelle Riva, and Chris Tucker are among the actors who have been invited to join, the organization announced today.

London — Rolf Harris, a veteran entertainer who has released hit singles and painted Queen Elizabeth II's portrait, has been arrested as part of a police investigation into sexual abuse allegations stemming from the Jimmy Savile scandal, British media reported Friday.
Major media outlets followed The Sun newspaper in identifying Harris, an Australian-born artist, musician and television host who is a household name in Britain.
He was first questioned by police in November but not arrested. He was arrested in March and released on bail pending further inquiries.
Asked about Harris, London's Metropolitan Police said they would not name suspects who have not been charged.
Police said an 82-year-old man in Berkshire, west of London, was arrested March 28 as part of Operation Yewtree, an investigation launched after revelations that Savile targeted hundreds of young victims over five decades. Savile died in 2011 at age 84.

Sinclair continues its TV station buying spree today by snapping up Fisher, a TV and radio power in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Sinclair’s stock is up 5.8% this morning to the highest levels investors have seen in more than a decade after it agreed to pay $373.3M, or $41 a share, for Fisher. That’s a 44% premium to Fisher’s trading price before January 10 when it said it would explore “strategic alternatives,” effectively putting itself on the block. Fisher shares are up 4.6% this morning, and more than 50% since the beginning of 2013. Fisher’s 20 TV stations, which reach 3.9% of the country, include ABC affiliates in Seattle and Portland, Or; CBS stations in Spokane, Boise, and Eugene; the NBC outlet in Eugene; and Fox, Univision, and CW affiliates. “We are excited to acquire Fisher and expand our coverage westward, especially in the two key markets of Seattle and Portland,” Sinclair CEO David Smith says.

Sinclair Broadcast Group‘s shares are up about 1.6% in after-market trading after it announced its second major station deal this week — part of an effort to boost its presence in small markets — and a side pact to sell stations to a new firm owned by conservative commentator Armstrong Williams. The latest acquisition includes 18 stations owned by Barrington Broadcasting, with an additional agreement to either operate or provide services to six other stations. The 24 stations reach 3.4% of the country and include affiliates for all of the major networks including NBC outlets in Flint, Mich.; Toledo, Ohio; and Syracuse, NY. Sinclair says it expects the deal to close in Q2, following FCC and antitrust approval. It will take out bank loans or access capital markets to pay for the stations. On Tuesday, Sinclair agreed to pay $95M for four outlets owned by Cox Media. When combined, Sinclair expects “our expertise and resources...

Los Angeles -- Ravi Shankar passed away in December before he could attend The Recording Academy's Special Merit Awards celebration where he was to receive a lifetime achievement award. But the 91-year-old sitar master, Indian music promoter and friend to The Beatles got the call a few days before he passed away, and that meant everything to his family.
"I was very excited to hear about the lifetime achievement award a week before my dad passed away, one day before he went into surgery," Shankar's daughter, Norah Jones, said in an email to the Associated Press a few hours before the ceremony. "He knew about it and was very happy, and also that he and my sister, Anoushka, were both nominated in the same category for a Grammy (this year) was a special thing as well. The "Powerpuff Girls" are returning to Cartoon Network.
Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles will star in a new special premiering later in 2013 on Cartoon Network. However, they may look a little different. The pint-sized superheroes are getting re-imagined in CG. Look for the girls to expand their saving duties from Townsville to the Us as a whole.
Ringo Starr created an original song, "I Wish I Was A Powerpuff Girl," for the new special. The original voice cast will return to their roles for the "Powerpuff Girls" special. Dave Smith will direct the special with Kevin Dart serving as art director.
"Powerpuff Girls" originally aired on Cartoon Network from 1998-2005.

Cartoon Network has revealed their 2013-2014 TV show lineup today and, much to the dismay of fans, confirmed that that “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” and “Young Justice” have been canceled. While this may not come as the biggest surprise for the “Young Justice” viewers who paid attention to both the series’ hiatus and subsequent cancellation of its comic book counterpart, the news certainly comes as a blow for fans. Together with the end of “Green Lantern: The Animated Series”, this leaves only “Beware the Batman” and “Teen Titans Go” as the remaining DC Nation shows, both of which have yet to premiere on the network.
While the absence of the shows didn’t necessarily cement the cancellation of the series, Giancarlo Volpe, the showrunner for “Green Lantern: Tas” confirmed the news via his Twitter stating, “This time we knew. They just didn’t want us to announce it publicly until they did.

The Information Commissioner's Office has fined Sony Computer Entertainment Europe £250,000 ($396,100) following the hacking of PlayStation Network in 2011.
Described as a "serious breach" of the Data Protection Act, the Information Commissioner's Office (Ico) attacked Sony for operating a sub-standard security system and claimed the hack could have been easily prevented.
Speaking with the BBC, a Sony spokesperson said: "Criminal attacks on electronic networks are a real and growing aspect of 21st century life and Sony continually works to strengthen our systems, building in multiple layers of defence and working to make our networks safe, secure and resilient."
But according to the Ico's report, technical developments on Psn led to user passwords becoming unsecured, exposing large amounts of sensitive data such as payment card information.

From Beijing to Berlin, a roundup of some of the events that have been wowing the crowds around the world this year
Kabul, Afghanistan
Afghanistan's first female rapper, musicians from nine countries, and the premiere of Oscar-shortlisted drama Buzkashi Boys drew hundreds to Sound Central, an international music festival held in a city more used to hosting military or aid conferences. For the mostly young crowd, it was a rare chance to let their hair down: there is little entertainment here beyond picnics, visits to friends or video games and films watched at home.
Sri Lankan band Paranoid Earthling brought music from another country that has endured years of bitter civil war. A day with only female performers gave hundreds of women, often barred from mingling with men, a chance to enjoy the music and art. And Buzkashi Boys, shot in Afghanistan with an all-Afghan cast, premiered to an enthusiastic...

Plant recorded "Walking Into Clarksdale" with former Zeppelin bandmate Jimmy Page and has visited the town numerous times. The rock star is returning to Clarksdale this weekend to headline the Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival's 25th anniversary celebration with his new roots-music band, the Sensational Space Shifters.
On Saturday, Plant will take the stage with Grammy-winning vocalist Patty Griffin, West African virtuoso musician Juldeh Camara, guitarists Justin Adams and Bill Fuller, keyboardist John Baggott and drummer Dave Smith.
The performance is being hailed "one of the single biggest things to happen to Clarksdale," said resident and Cat Head music store owner Roger Stolle.

Signs & Symbols Whitney Museum of American Art Through October 28, 2012 Saturday I woke up early, went for a run in Central Park, had breakfast at The Carlyle, and at 10 went over to the Whitney Museum to meet the artist and director Michael Lee Nirenberg (I just finished an interview with him on his new performance documentary Redacted), the actor James Franco, who Nirenberg was meeting to discuss doing the voice-over narrative for another doc, and Nirenberg's assistant Lana (who also works in the film industry, mostly punching up scripts for comedies) to catch the new exhibit Signs & Symbols, featuring the work of Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Tobey, Will Barnet, Forrest Bess, and others.
Drawn from the permanent collection, the works in the show represent a strain of graphic expressionism that was largely overshadowed in the Fifties by more painterly works, such as Jackson Pollock's spattered canvases and Mark Rothko's stained, atmospheric takes on Veronica's Veil.

"America's Got Talent" (Mon., 9 p.m. Et on NBC) is no stranger to danger and injury, but it's still devastating to see a group's chances in the competition come down to this. That said, it was because of a critical error during one of their high-flying stunts that 787 dance crew found themselves possibly down one member. Even should he return, it's possible the costly error could cost them their chance to advance in the competition.
To their advantage, though not in a good way, was the fact that the judges found themselves underwhelmed by so many of the performers featured. "Quite a few of the acts really blew it," Zap2It said of the episode.
At least three of them were spared the chance to blow their chances, as they were advanced automatically to the live shows. Those were William Close and his homemade instruments, animal act the Olate Dogs,...

It's time for the "America's Got Talent" judges to whittle the 100+ acts they put through from the auditions to the 48 semi-finalists.
The judges immediately put the acts into Judges' Favorites (who get to go first) and the Stand-Bys (who perform second for any remaining spots). There are also some acts that are in neither group and are going home right away, plus three acts get sent straight through to the live shows, leaving 45 slots. Those three acts are the Olate Dogs, the human cannonball David Smith and the weird homemade harp thing guy William Close.
The categories are divided thusly:
Danger: The All Wheel Sports stunt team, the American BMX stunt team, the New Guard America drill team, balance artist Cristin Sandu and crossbow artist Ben Blaque.
Female Singers: Mary Joyner, Roxy Doll, Brianna Price, Cecilia Detwiler, Luna and Nikki Jensen.
Dance Groups: Funk Beyond Control, All That!, Loyalty and 787 Crew.

Bow chicka bow wow. Lulu—ladies and gents—is a mom, wife and plus-size pole dancer. The fiery redhead showed up on stage wearing a teal bikini, ready to manhandle the large pole behind her. Google's new privacy policy is too vague for users to control how their personal details are shared, according to the UK's data protection chief. Deputy information commissioner David Smith expressed concerns about how the internet giant manages information across its various services. "Google's privacy policy is too vague," said Smith. "The requirement under the UK Data Protection Act is for a company to tell people what it actually intends to do with their data, not just what it might do at some unspecified point in future. "Being vague does not help in giving users effective control about how their information is shared. It's their information at the end of the day." Google implemented the policy on March 1, enabling it to produce tailored adverts based on collated user data across 60 of its services. The firm's strategy has already (more)...

A New York judge has ordered supermodel Jessica White to enrol in anger management classes for her part in an argument over a cab last year.
The runway beauty, who has previously dated Sean Penn, was detained by police in October after she allegedly struck Vanessa Kian in the face and pulled her hair during a dispute over a taxi.
White twice turned down a plea deal over the misdemeanour assault and harassment charges, and on Wednesday, a Manhattan judge ruled that as long as she stays out of trouble for the next six months, the charges will be thrown out.
White's lawyer, David Smith, tells the New York Daily News, "Jessica has maintained her innocence from day one and that has not changed. This case will now correctly end in a complete dismissal. Jessica looks forward to moving forward with her career and charity without distraction."
White was told to pay a $490 (£306) fine, while she must also complete three days of community service and two days' anger management classes.

Blood Oath David Buchert is the director behind the recently released slasher film Blood Oath starring legendary scream queen Tiffany Shepis (Night of the Demons). Blood Oath deals with a group of friends on a weekend camping trip who decide to investigate a local urban legend. Unaware of just how true this urban legend is, they are forced into a fight for survival against a horrific monster who roams the woods feasting on the bodies of who ever enters his domain. With Blood Oath, director David Buchert was able to capture the nostalgia of the slasher films of yesteryear that horror fans grew up watching such as Friday the 13th, The Forest, Madman, etc. He showed an ability to play up the inherent spookiness of sitting around a camp fire telling urban legends to one another. He showed an ability with Blood Oath to remind slasher fans why they so...

The reason behind the breakup? Emily still has feelings for her ex-boyfriend, automotive executive David Smith, explains the source. “She’s got something with David,” says the source. “And David totally digs Emily.”
But even though Emily has ended things with Brad, she and David are taking it slow.

“David’s very patient,” continues the source. “He knows that Emily totally digs him, but wants to let her get herself together.”

It's the character issues on Fairly Legal that keep me tuning in and "Bridges" gave us plenty. The season finale had Kate Reed on an emotional roller coaster, with both her personal and professional lives left in shambles.
We started off with a shocking disclosure: Kate's home pregnancy test was positive. I couldn't wait to find out what implications that might have for Justin and Kate's on again, off again relationship. Unfortunately, the aftermath of this revelation wasn't pretty.
When Kate all but missed Justin's award ceremony, he was furious. He's mentioned this issue before. In his eyes Kate, always put her cases before their marriage.
