“Normal People” star Paul Mescal, who made a splash last week when he was cast in the “Gladiator” sequel, is replacing Blake Jenner in “Merrily We Roll Along,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Richard Linklater is directing the feature film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical of the same name.
Mescal will play Franklin Shepard, a once-in-a-generation composing talent who morphs into a self-centered Hollywood producer barely clinging to his second marriage.
Jenner, the former “Glee” star, left the project shortly after allegations of domestic abuse were raised by his ex-wife and former co-star Melissa Benoist in 2019. Jenner would issue an apology almost a year later.

Richard Linklater’s feature film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along” is merrily rolling again, with “Aftersun” and “Normal People” star Paul Mescal stepping into the lead role of Broadway composer Franklin Shepard, replacing original star Blake Jenner.
Mescal joins Ben Platt, who plays Franklin’s creative partner and lyricist Charley, and Beanie Feldstein, playing the duo’s good friend, theater critic Mary. The story tracks the trio’s disintegrating friendship as Franklin abandons Charley and Mary to become a successful Hollywood film producer — the twist is that the story is told in reverse chronological order, starting with Mary castigating Franklin as a sell-out and ending 20 years earlier with the characters as fresh-faced hopefuls.
Variety has confirmed that Mescal has already shot a segment for the film.

Where did that come from, Andrew Garfield?
Mr. Garfield stars in Tick, Tick... Boom! for Netflix, and he stuns.
Lin-Manuel Miranda directs the feature, based on the musical of the same name by the late Jonathan Larson.
Tick, Tick... Boom! never made it to Broadway, performing only off-broadway.
Known for Rent, Larson's work has seen plenty of acclaim.
Miranda's new take on Tick, Tick... Boom! turns Larson's simple stage musical into a sweeping and engaging 115 minutes.
Everything was beautiful; from the sets, the performances, and even the cheesy cameos of literally every Broadway star living,
The choreography used was nothing to laugh at, and for Garfield, who has never done a musical before, could not have been easy.
But he, along with the rest of the cast, performed some incredible dances and musical numbers.
Garfield's singing voice also surprised, as he's never shown off his vocal chops until this film.

There is no easy way to write about drug addiction, just as there is no easy way to read about it. Lost in Ghost Town, author Carder Stout’s new memoir, somehow grabs the problem of addiction head-on while shattering common stereotypes behind it: by writing about a privileged kid, the book shows how drug addiction has no bounds when it comes to socio-economic status.

Richard Linklater, who earned an Oscar nomination for directing “Boyhood” over the course of 12 years, is embarking on an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s 1981 stage musical “Merrily We Roll Along” that will be filmed over the next 20 years.

They say Rome wasn’t built in a day, but they never say Rome wasn’t built in a play — wait, no, I mean they never say a play wasn’t built in day. That’s because of the 24 Hour Plays, a group of actors, writers, and directors who write and produce short plays in 24 hours, with the proceeds of the performances going to charity. Last night was the 15th annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway, an event put on by the company to benefit the Urban Arts Partnership, a nonprofit that creates arts-integrated programs for underprivileged public-school students. How it worked was six groups — each with its own writer, director, and ensemble — met at the American Airlines Theater at 10 p.m. Sunday. The writers, which included David Cross, Jonathan Marc Sherman, and Lucy Thurber, then worked overnight putting together a script that the directors and cast had started Monday...

Amanda Seyfried, who will soon appear in the 24 Hour Plays project with her boyfriend Justin Long, brought her beloved dog Finn out on a jog Thursday.
Amanda Seyfriend & Dog Finn
Seyfried, 28, headed out with Finn for a jog in Los Angeles. The Ted 2 actress dressed for the workout in a pair of short black running shorts, a Wakeman basketball t-shirt and running sneakers. Multitasking, Seyfried held onto Finn’s leash and a water bottle in one hand while listening to music.
Though Seyfried has been spending a lot of time on the East Coast lately while filming Ted 2, she’s managed to keep her faithful dog at her side. Earlier this month, Seyfried shared a picture on Instagram of Finn posing with the stuffed animal star of the movie.

Ethan Hawke has had the most unique of careers: a bona fide film star who has avoided Hollywood. On the eve of Before Midnight, Emma John meets the actor, director, novelist – and music lover – in New York
Ethan Hawke is out and about in New York, the city he's lived in for 30 years, a place where famous faces slide past every day. He's wearing a baseball cap, a muddy brown hoodie and a schlubby pair of cords. It's an outfit you might think he chose especially to look nondescript, but in reality it's because he likes corduroy trousers, though his stylist hates them and wishes to God he wouldn't wear them in public.
Someone spots him and timidly approaches. As they lean forward Hawke can see the tears in their eyes. The fan trembles: "Mr… Dorff?" Hawke doesn't want to ruin their moment, so he gives a smile, shakes their hand.

Classic Stage Company, New York
Last summer, at least three different Uncle Vanyas bestrode New York stages. Recent years have also witnessed fields of cherry orchards, a small flock of seagulls, and at least a dozen sisters. With Anton Chekhov's tetralogy seemingly exhausted, the Classic Stage Company has revived his lesser-known 1887 play, Ivanov, with a new translation by Carol Rocamora. Ethan Hawke performs the title role under Austin Pendleton's direction. (Polymathic Pendleton also plays Lebedev, standing in for an injured actor.)
Like The Wood Demon, Uncle Vanya's precursor, Ivanov offers a chance to see the theatrical master not yet certain of his powers. Chekhov renders some of its scenes and speeches adroitly, but its construction falters, particularly in the final act. No wonder, soon after revising Ivanov, Chekhov would cry out that he needed new endings, complaining in a letter, "The hero either gets married or shoots himself!

Chicago – He’s the accomplished actor best known for locking horns with Daniel Day-Lewis in Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterpiece, “There Will Be Blood.” She’s the acclaimed playwright who’s earned raves for her acting both onstage (“Angels in America”) and onscreen (“The Exploding Girl”). Together, they are a match made in movie heaven.
The new romantic comedy, “Ruby Sparks,” marks the latest collaboration of real-life couple Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan, who first met after being cast in Jonathan Marc Sherman’s 2007 Off-Broadway play, “Things We Want.” Last year, Dano and Kazan played an anguished married couple in Kelly Reichardt’s existential western “Meek’s Cutoff.” Yet “Sparks” features the couple’s most intimate and complex collaboration to date. Kazan performs double duty as leading lady and first-time screenwriter, while Dano tackles the tricky role of a lonely writer whose lovable neurosis harbors a potentially repellant dark side.

MTV Geek draws our attention to this Saturday’s 826Nyc Charity Scrabble Tournament, where New Yorkers can help raise money for NYC public school programs by playing “Scrabble For Cheaters” against the likes of Peter Dinklage, John Hodgman, Jonathan Marc Sherman, and Michael Showalter (and probably mostly against each other, but who cares, those dudes will be there.) So basically, your ultimate doublefantasy of playing Scrabble with Peter Dinklage is not only a plausible reality, but it’s this weekend. Provided, of course, you live in New York City, which you should, because you can play Scrabble with Peter Dinklage here – it truly is the City That Never Sleeps On Sometimes Having Things Like Scrabble With Peter Dinklage Happen. (Plus the other three guys are all awesome, just focusing on Dinklage to keep up the Thrones-beat and make the Photoshopping easier). If you do end up against Dinklage, just make...

For parents, summer camp may be nothing more than a solution to the problem of what to do with the kids when school is out. But for kids who know what they want to be when they grow up, it's much more: It's a career move. Theatre-camp graduates know well how it gave them a foundation in a world they longed to be a part of, while also serving as a rite of passage, bridging the gap between childhood and adulthood. "I think I fell out of the womb knowing I wanted to perform," says Russell Arden Koplin. From ages 8 to 16, she spent her summers at Belvoir Terrace ( Belvoir Terrace), an all-girls performing arts camp in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. There she thrived in acting classes, musical theatre classes, Shakespeare classes -- she even learned to master a brogue, which helped her land her first professional job, in the...
