Exclusive: Emmy and Academy Award nominated producer David Permut and filmmaker Oscar Boyson are teaming up with author/filmmaker Mathew Klickstein to bring the San Diego Comic-Con origin story to life for the first time on screen in a new documentary based on the latter’s book See You at San Diego: An Oral History of Comic-Con, Fandom, and the Triumph of Geek Culture.
The See You at San Diego documentary will follow how a scrappy group of teenage fans, zinesters, illustrators, stoners, hippies, weirdoes, bookworms, and science buffs in the late 1960s joined forces with an unemployed thirtysomething comic fan to create what has now become one of the most influential pop culture events ever. San Diego Comic-Con has twice been recognized as the largest pop culture gathering worldwide by the Guinness Book of World Records in recent years.

God bless the deranged maniacs at the Warner Archives and their desire to not let anything be forgotten. As part of their exponentially-growing manufacture on demand DVD program, they’ve added to their already impressive list of animated releases with a 2-disc release of Hanna-Barbera’s The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley. Martin Short has had a wide and varied career in comedy, and inamongst appearing on Sctv, Saturday Night Live and his film career, he created a character named Ed Grimley. Formed from equal parts of sight gags from his Sctv days and a voice he used to do to annoy his wife, Ed caught on with America during Short’s SNL run. When NBC and Hanna-Barbera looked for a way to compete with CBS’ Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, the hyperkinetic Mr. Grimley was tailor-made. Featuring a mini-reunion of the Sctv gang, the series features Martin in the titular...

2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.
WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!
I've put stars next to the panels we are interested in attending. Check out the schedule, and let us know what you are looking forward to seeing most!
Friday March 16th
12:30-1:30 Idw Presents: The Idw Panel!— Chief creative officer Chris Ryall and sergeant of marketing Dirk Wood, give out prizes, make announcements, and evade questions!

Holy Sh*t! The World’s Weirdest Comic Books
By Paul Gravette and Peter Stanbury
St. Martin’s Press, October 2008, $12.95
This is the kind of book I’m actually surprised to still see – I thought “look at this weird stuff” books had been entirely superseded by the greater speed and flexibility of the Internet. (I can think of three similar sites just off the top of my head – Superdickery, James Lilek’s Funny Books, and Scott Shaw!’s Oddball Comics – and without even diving into the blog world.) But I suppose as long as there are cash registers in this world, there will be eye-catching little impulse-buy books to sit next to them and lure in the curious, unwary, or amused. Holy Sh*t! is a small-format hardcover, roughly six inches square, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there was a corresponding point-of-purchase cardboard display that holds six to eight of them.

In an attempt to backdoor a funny-animal revival during an era when superheroes were dominating comics, cartoonist Scott Shaw and writer Roy Thomas came up with the bright idea to combine the two genres in the series Captain Carrot And The Amazing Zoo Crew, which debuted in 1982 to moderate success. Shaw's gag-packed art—as well as his clever re-imagining of DC heroes in animal form—was the main selling point for Captain Carrot early on, and was the selling point again when DC revived the concept for a 2007 miniseries. Its Captain Carrot And The Final Ark trade paperback collects that miniseries plus a few issues from the early-'80s run, and it's all delightful to look at, but a strain to read. No matter the era, Captain Carrot comics tend toward the cramped and convoluted, with plots that are subservient to the jokes. And no matter how well-observed or snappily rendered,...
