There’s a moment in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (in theaters now), where Niels Bohr, the famous Danish physicist (played by Kenneth Branagh) who developed the model of the atom, asks a young J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), years before he would gain notoriety and infamy as the father of the atomic bomb: “Can you hear the music?” At that specific moment, the score by composer Ludwig Göransson quite literally soars – it’s beautiful and lilting but soon turns more menacing, even ominous. In that single musical moment (clocking in at less than two minutes on the official album), the entire movie – how the scientific idealism that gives way to untold horror – elegantly unfurls. And Göransson cements himself as one of Nolan’s most essential collaborators.
TheWrap spoke to Göransson about what it was like collaborating with Nolan a second time, why it’s Ok to use electronics in the...

When DreamWorks purchased the “Trolls” franchise in 2013, it seemed like an odd revival. The furry creatures had been lost in the 1990’s after being the toy fad of a generation.
Since then, DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures managed to turn this IP back into a multi-million dollar success story, powered by catchy songs from star-studded casts and topped with glitter, lots of it. Clips from the third film, due to be released on Nov. 17 in the U.S, were presented Thursday at France’s Annecy Animation Festival, the world’s biggest toon fest, in front of an electrified audience.
Introduced by director Walt Dohrn and producer Gina Shay (returning for their third “Trolls”film together), along with co-director Tim Heitz, the whimsical world of “Trolls Band Together” unveiled itself as a richer and brighter universe than ever, leaving fans’ eyes sparkling.

As noted in our Best TV Shows list, there was just a lot of television in 2022. It’s so, so easy for great work to get lost in the relentless churn of new streaming content, even as reality programming bends us ever closer to the “30 Rock” universe. It’s even easier for great musical work to get lost on television, where scores are able to have an ambition and originality the rest of a legacy IP production might lack, or to embrace experimental elements viewers may not even notice while they’re watching a conventional-looking scene. We double-checked that film legends John Williams and Howard Shore came to TV to score themes this year, because it feels like a million years ago already now.

The biggest surprise of the 2022 Emmy awards is that there were almost no surprises at all. Category after category, the nominees awards experts expected to win, did win — and in several cases, won again. The three shows with the most nominations — “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” and “The White Lotus” — all won the top prizes in their respective categories (though one of those wins was a bit more surprising than others). For most of the telecast, the most unexpected moments came in the winner speeches (Sheryl Lee Ralph! Jennifer Coolidge!), and in the show itself (the “Good Burger” reunion!).
Ultimately, the night fell in line from the 2021 Emmys, when mega-wins by “The Crown,” “Ted Lasso” and “Mare of Easttown” made the winners at the ceremony fairly predictable as soon as the nominations were announced. Still, there were some disappointments, especially for freshman shows that broke into the nominations with a lot of...

“Succession” may be the frontrunner for Best Drama Series – leading all shows this year with a record-breaking 25 nominations – but that did not stop its fellow nominees from scoring huge wins at Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmys. While the HBO drama secured a key victory in Best Casting for Avy Kaufman and Francine Maisler, it lost major technical categories to “Euphoria,” “Squid Game,” “Severance” and “Stranger Things” – all of which nabbed multiple trophies. Though despite those losses, there is little to worry about “Succession” looking to pick up its second series win.
The family satire had 13 nominations going into the Creative Arts, seven of which were in the guest acting categories where it lost to Colman Domingo for “Euphoria” in Guest Actor and Lee Yoo-mi for “Squid Game” in Guest Actress. The former show also took advantage of the double nominations for “Succession” in editing, while the latter bested it in production design.

The season of campaigning leading up to the 74th Annual Emmy Awards might not have been full of as many shocks and twists as so many nominated shows, but this crop of top television talent is one for the books. Ahead of the Emmy Awards ceremony tonight, the race for major categories could yield anything from an old favorite sweeping the board or a debut juggernaut dethroning the reigning champs.
Most of the Creative Arts Emmys went to new or recent shows, which could indicate the tide of Monday’s broadcast, where giants like “Succession” go head-to-head with breakouts like “Squid Game.” HBO won big at the Creative Arts Emmys on September 3 and 4, which bodes well for comedy favorite “Barry” — nominated after a nearly three-year hiatus — and Limited Series “The White Lotus.” Apple’s “Severance,” also known as IndieWire’s pick for the best TV show of 2022 so far, took...

The music of “The White Lotus,” “Severance,” “Stranger Things” and “Schmigadoon!” won Creative Arts Emmys Sunday night in a mixture of predicted wins and upsets.
The big winner was Chilean-born, Montreal-based composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer who walked off with a pair of statues for his music for HBO’s “The White Lotus,” for main title theme music and for music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special.
His primal drumbeats, wordless voices and wooden flutes set a tropical vibe for the Hawaiian resort and its offbeat visitors. And although it was entered in the “limited series” category, “The White Lotus” is slated to return for a second season.

The television academy first formally acknowledged the art of small screen music composition by honoring the “Dragnet” score in 1955, and they have similarly awarded other series every year since 1968. Since 2019, only continuing scripted shows have been allowed to compete for the Best Music for Series Emmy, while others are now either relegated to the Best Music for Limited Series or Best Music for Documentary Series categories.
The 2022 slate of Best Music for Series nominees includes comedies “The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu) and “Schmigadoon!” (Apple TV+) and dramas “Loki” (Disney+), “Severance” (Apple TV+) and “Succession” (HBO). According to Netflix, the Skip Intro button is pressed 136 million times in a typical day. Moreover, the feature has been adopted by streamers industry-wide. So what does it mean for a potentially iconic title theme? While approaches vary, the composers nominated for outstanding original main title theme music at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are united in confronting the slight with good humor and unbridled creativity.

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Apple TV+, for this edition we look at how production design, score, and direction came together to build the chillingly mysterious corporate world of “Severance.”
The ingenious premise of “Severance” — in which office workers agree to a procedure in which work experiences and memories are “severed” from those outside work, allowing personal and professional lives to remain completely separate — has proven irresistible to audiences tantalized by the issues and possibilities. The premise was equally irresistible, and challenging, for artisans who had to figure out how to bring Lumon Industries and its surroundings to life.
The show’s unique tone, and a genre that sits somewhere between sci-fi, satire, drama, and psychological horror, created intriguing opportunities and obstacles for the filmmakers tasked with getting the balance exactly right.

When composers are struggling on a piece, sometimes all it takes is one simple directive or another set of eyes — or ears, rather — to help them crack it. For “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore, everything became crystal clear when Amy Sherman-Palladino told them that the Harry Belafonte song they had to write should be a wedding toast, not a pop hit. The duo hails from the theater world, where often complete strangers help them unlock pieces.
“One of the things that we get the option of doing that’s so different from working in TV and film is that… we get to present it in front of an audience at a preview,” Mizer tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Composers panel group discussion with fellow Emmy nominees Brian Tyler (“1883”), Siddhartha Khosla (“Only Murders in the Building”), Christopher Willis (“Schmigadoon!“) and Theodore Shapiro...

Ben Stiller and Theodore Shapiro have been longtime collaborators, dating back to 2004’s “Along Came Polly,” but “Severance” marked their first TV series together. And in the process of figuring out the sonic landscape of the Apple TV+ drama, another unexpected thing happened: Stiller ghosted Shapiro. The composer had initially written an electronic piece for the show’s innie world, where the Lumon workers are separated from their non-work memories, which live in their outie selves. As they went over the piece, the director and executive producer kept honing in on a chord progression in the middle.
“I thought, ‘I should do something more with this. He’s clearly interested in this idea.’ When I got back home to L.A., I kind of went straight to the piano and… started playing it sort of exactly in the manner of the beginning of the main title,” Shapiro tells Gold Derby...

“I wrote the very first version of the pilot while I was working at a door factory,” revealed “Severance” creator Dan Erickson at a special Emmys FYC event on Sunday night. “It was the first job I could find when I first moved to L.A. It was off of a Craigslist post. I started to hate my life so intensely that the idea of the show just came out.”
Feelings of discontent or hating anything seemed to be completely severed at the gathering inside Nobu Malibu, cheekily referred to as a “Lumon Corporate Retreat.” Waves crashed onto the sandy beach below as guests including PGA members, industry insiders, entertainers and select media enjoyed caviar, champagne and Japanese cuisine. The darkly sinister, yet whimsical soundtrack composed by Emmy nominee Theodore Shapiro set the tone.

From all the accolades, it’s surprising that the project took years to come to fruition, as did finding the perfect tone for the show which was born after assembling the perfect group of creatives who trusted their instincts along the way.

“I first learned about this show very casually at a Halloween party,” admits “Severance” composer Theodore Shapiro. “I was with Adam Scott, who I know because our kids go to school together. He mentioned that he was working on this series with Ben Stiller. He mentioned a little something about what the premise was and it sounded amazing. I sort of thought, ‘I hope I get that call.’ In late 2019 Ben called and told me about the series and he sent me a couple of scripts. It was immediately so thrilling and sparked so many ideas. I started writing themes immediately.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

When I say it took me a few episodes to get into a show, it usually means that the show itself needed a few episodes to figure its world out before it was able to draw me into it. When I say that about “Severance,” though, it’s because the beginning of the show’s first season is as unnerving as it is bleak. The first three episodes create a world both completely unlike ours and yet terrifyingly similar enough to prove jarring in a way that became hard to shake between viewings.
Suffice it to say, sitting down to watch this show isn’t an especially relaxing experience. By the end of its 9-episode first season, though,
From creator Dan Erickson and director Ben Stiller, “Severance” hinges on a fictional procedure that makes it possible for employees of a mysterious conglomerate to wholly separate their corporate lives from their personal lives.

In order to avoid splitting votes and allow for the possibility of netting two acting nominations this year, Searchlight Pictures will campaign Andrew Garfield’s performance as televangelist Jim Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” for supporting actor consideration, based on an invite that was sent to BAFTA voters for an upcoming virtual screening of the film.
Following the biopic’s bow at the Toronto International Film Festival and modest box office receipts, its Oscar prospects have been seemingly on the fringe, but the film, directed by Michael Showalter, could make a roaring comeback during the season. Garfield’s co-star Jessica Chastain, who plays his wife Tammy Faye, will angle for lead actress, and could become a central piece of a competitive race that includes Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”).

“I never drank alone before rehab,” cracks Hildy Good (Sigourney Weaver), a divorced, 60-year-old real estate agent whose façade of grace and stability is crumbling even faster than that of the quaint Massachusetts harbor town where her family has lived since the days of the Salem witch trials; what’s happening to Wendover isn’t what you’d call “gentrification,” but the influx of chain businesses and white-collar types buying up all the colonial houses has made the place a shell of what it used to be. Hildy is on the verge of getting priced out, herself, and she’s not taking it well.

This weekend may end up being an incredibly important one in the history of cinema. Why, you ask? Well, Trolls World Tour opted to skip a theatrical release entirely, debuting as a rental in homes. For years, theaters have fought the day and date model, suggesting it could be an end to the cinematic experience. That’s led to some of their battles with Netflix, etc, as streaming services make inroads into the film world. Today, we can look a bit into whether this movie is truly the canary in the coal mine… For those unaware, the film is a sequel to the surprise hit (and Academy Award nominee) Trolls. Here is the storyline, according to IMDb: “Poppy and Branch discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes scattered over six different lands devoted to six different kinds of music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop and Rock.

What stands out about Theodore Shapiro’s score for “Bombshell” is that the music isn’t frantic despite being set in a fast-paced environment — Roger Ailes’ newsroom at Fox News. Instead, the score straddles two worlds: that of Ailes and that of the women who worked for him.
“[Director] Jay [Roach] and I talked about finding Roger’s voice in the music. He saw himself as a tough-minded realist — the only one brave enough to speak the truth about how the world really worked. We wanted to find a musical language that reflected Roger’s view [of himself],” Shapiro explains. “That music is very dry, hard and percussive. There are closed mic, deep percussion and piano. There are strings, but they are very dry and in-your-face. There are harsh string plucks.”
The film is also about women telling their story, Shapiro says. It’s about Megyn Kelly (an unrecognizable Charlize Theron) and Gretchen Carlson...

Whether this is the first true movie of the #MeToo movement or not, Bombshell is a film that utilizes disgust. Coursing through its cinematic veins is an incredible anger at the men in power who prey upon women. Even when the plot itself can remain surface level at times, the angry nature of it, a righteous anger that’s easily identified with, helps rule the day. Throw in two phenomenal performances, two solid supporting performances, as well as an unlikely ability to make this all still entertaining, and you have something very interesting. Opening this week, Bombshell is about to become a real conversation piece. The movie is a ripped from the headlines drama about the Fox News scandal involving chairman Roger Ailes (John Lithgow). A predator for years, everything is kept under the rug until the 2016 election cycle. As star anchor Megan Kelly (Charlize Theron) is harassed by Donald Trump supporters,...

Ever since the very first Trailer for Last Christmas was released, something felt…off. The story shown just seemed to be hiding a little bit of information. This led to subsequent analysis and over analysis of the little bit of footage, leading to wild theories about what could be happening within this holiday season romantic tale. Well, now that I’ve seen it and the embargo has lifted, I can report that while there is a degree of accuracy to some theories, it’s also a disservice to an otherwise fairly serviceable film. In fact, the plot itself probably would have been better off keeping things simple. At least there’s George Michael music throughout the flick, right? Alas, it’s not nearly enough. The movie is a romantic holiday story, following a troubled young woman. For Kate (Emilia Clarke), bad choices are a way of life, only compounded by...

Donald Glover made an unexpected appearance at Film Independent’s “An Evening With…” series on Tuesday, held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts in Beverly Hills and presented by the HFPA.
Joining “Black Panther” composer and Childish Gambino collaborator Ludwig Göransson, who was the subject of a Q&A conducted by “The Treatment” host Elvis Mitchell, Glover emerged wearing a burgundy track suit and sunglasses to rousing applause and launched into the hit song “Redbone,” which had been rearranged by Göransson’s wife Serena to include a string quintet along with African conga in addition to the traditional electric bass, guitar and keyboards.
The performance was the last in the hour-long event highlighting Göransson’s work. Earlier in the evening, a drum ensemble performed score music from pivotal scenes in “Black Panther,” as did the quintet. Göransson also led band members in music he composed for the movie “Creed,...

Merry Christmas! As a little gift under your stocking today, I have three reviews of would be Academy Award players to share with you. The films in question are the Nicole Kidman vehicle Destroyer, the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of the Sex, and the fellow biopic Stan & Ollie. They still might end up Oscar nominated before all is said and done, but their battles are all a bit uphill, as of today. These movies offer up the end of the 2018 release year, so they’re literally wrapping things up. There will be more reviews in January, but they’ll be for early year releases, just keep that in mind (spoiler alert: January releases tend to be rough). Nicole Kidman strips away every trace of star glamour to play Erin Bell, an Lapd detective and boozy burnout trying to close the books on the cold case that ruined her life 17 years ago. The star and director Karyn Kusama (Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body) take no shortcuts to the dark night of this woman’s soul. Eyes red-rimmed and skin fried by the sun, this cop looks beaten. It’s easy to see why.
We first meet Erin in the present as she staggers out of her car and into a crime scene.
