After Stanley Kubrick died, his widow Christiane reflected on a lesson her late husband never quite seemed to learn. As she told the BFI, "He would start the longest and most difficult jobs with this optimism and say, 'Oh, it won't take long.' He never learned the lesson that it does." Kubrick's movies were, themselves, very often the "longest and most difficult jobs" and 1987's "Full Metal Jacket" remains one of the best examples.
As Kubrick's daughter, Anya, offered in that same interview, "The point was to get things right. So if he felt someone was in error, he would make his point." Often making that point would take the form of demanding an inhuman amount of takes on his movies, most famously 60, and in one case 127 takes, of scenes in "The Shining". Seven years after the 1980 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, Kubrick's follow-up, "Full Metal Jacket," would...

"They will erase Angola from the map. This is about lives." GKids has unveiled an official Us trailer for an indie animated feature titled Another Day of Life, a much more adult-level film than most of the other animated films that GKids releases. The film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and won awards at numerous other film fests throughout last year. A gripping story of a three-month-long journey that renowned Polish reporter Ryszard "Ricardo" Kapuściński took in the 1970s across Angola, ravaged by a war, in which the front lines shifted like a kaleidoscope from one day to the next. Adapted directly from Kapuscinski's book, telling the true story of a journalist and the lengths to which he'll go to report the news. Featuring the voices of Kerry Shale, Daniel Flynn, Youssef Kerkour, Lillie Flynn, and Akie Kotabe. This looks damn good, featuring rotoscope animation to...

Here’s a look at the latest poster and red-band trailer for Alchemy’s latest film, Moonwalkers
Directed by Antoine Bardou-Jacquet, the movie stars Ron Perlman, Rupert Grint, Robert Sheehan, Stephen Campbell Moore, Jeanne Abraham, and Kerry Shale.
In Moonwalkers, after failing to locate the legendary Stanley Kubrick, an unstable CIA agent (Ron Perlman) must instead team up with a seedy rock band manager (Rupert Grint) to develop the biggest con of all time – staging the moon landing.
Director Antoine Bardou-Jacquet says he doesn’t see his film as some kind of farce. “Why would an audience be interested in a movie like this? Google “moon landing,” and add up the viewers interested in the conspiracy theory about it, and you’ll find millions of hits. All these people deserve at last the true story of how we “never” landed on the moon.”

When I was a kid I was a massive fan of the likes of Beavis and Butthead and Ren & Stimpy – two cartoons that, even though dubbed “cartoons”, were not really suitable for younger kids. The former show pushed the boundaries of acceptability, often using lewd humour to get it’s liberal point across (something which went over my head, I just liked the toilet humour); whilst the latter took the gross-out route: mixing toilet humour and horrible sight gags, at the same time taking satirical pot-shots at various aspects of society.
In the years that followed, the idea of “adult animation” spawned an entire TV channel in the Us, Adult Swim, which in turn gave birth to one of my all-time favourite animated shows, Robot Chicken,...

[This week's "Retro Active" pick is inspired by its sequel, the Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren horror-actioner Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning]
For a franchise predicated on resurrection, it's an unexpected twist to find Universal Soldier: Regeneration reviving the long-dormant Jean-Claude Van Damme/Dolph Lundgren series by switching its focus from reanimation to cloning. Replication, however, does not breed derivation in John Hyams' 2009 direct-to-video gem, which ignores a handful of preceding sequels and picks up some time after Roland Emmerich's 1992 original, in which 'Nam soldiers Luc Deveraux (Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Lundgren) were brought back to life as superhuman killing machines by the U.S. government. At the start of Regeneration, that covert project has shifted to cloning and modifying the deceased into unstoppable zombie warriors, and has fallen into the wrong hands courtesy of Dr. Colin (Kerry Shale), who's gone rogue and sold his services—namely, a behemoth dubbed Ngu (Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski)—to Commander Topov (Zahary Baharov), who's threatening to detonate a Chernobyl...

This is the Pure Movies review of A Fantastic Fear Of Everything, directed by Crispian Mills and Chris Hopewell, and starring Simon Pegg, Paul Freeman, Amara Karan, Clare Higgins, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Kerry Shale. Simon Pegg plays Jack, a successful children’s author who wishes to be a serious crime novelist. However, while researching a novel based on Victorian serial killers, he undergoes a bout of paranoia, jumping at every bump and creak he hears within his rambling London flat. His agent contacts him with the news that a Hollywood big-shot wants to meet him, so Jack must smarten up his act… literally. He has to visit his dreaded local launderette to wash his only presentable outfit. However, it forces him to confront many of his worst fears, with a seemingly innocuous trip turning into an expedition with life-or-death ramifications.

Never mind me wittering ten to the dozen about TV's greatest ever series, it seems that the world and his wife want to talk about Doctor Who these days. Especially when a brand spanking new series hits the airwaves – that's cause for all sorts of newspapers, magazines, websites and TV shows to promote, discuss and analyse the latest escapades of the good Doctor.
Take the latest season – NuWho Season Six - or Season 32 if we're including the entire history. There's been plenty of drama happening in the latest season, but equally, there's been equal helpings of drama dished up by various critics and scaremongers who can't resist making a meal out of the slightest issue. So before entering the maelstrom of The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon (Impossible Moon), it's worth having a look at some of the furore surrounding its début. With that in mind, here then is...

Title: The Trip Directed By: Michael Winterbottom Starring: Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Claire Keelan, Margo Stilley, Rebecca Johnson, Dolya Gavanski, Kerry Shale Have you ever sat down for a movie with one of those massive tubs of popcorn? You toss the first piece back and the buttery morsel is heavenly, but then, when you get about half way down, maybe even less, you’re incredibly parched, sick of the taste and have no desire to go any further. Well, that’s kind of the way The Trip makes you feel. There certainly can be too much of a good thing. When his girlfriend opts out and he can’t manage to find another...

3 months later July 1969 Valley of the Gods, Utah. Amy (Karen Gillan) is caught by Canton (Mark Sheppard) and shot. She aks if he can remember why he's doing this. Cue flashback with the Doctor (Matt Smith) telling Canton to look behind him. The Doctor is tied up and now sports a beard and long-ish hair. Reminded me of Robinson Crusoe. Well the image just came to me as he looked a little ship-wrecked, or should I say Tardis-wrecked. Amy had markings on her arm. New York. River (Alex Kingston) has the same markings too as she's chased by The Silent. She marks her arm everytime she sees one. It's a tally to remind her she's seen them. Canton catches up with her too and she tells him they were invaded a long time ago. She's cornered by him and his men; uttering, "There's always a way out." Before she plunges backwards off the edge.
