In March 2020, during the first days of the Covid pandemic, IndieWire launched an Instagram Live series. The idea was to hold a causal conversation with talent about their creative process and how they spend their free time, a discussion that took on a very different meaning against the uncertain backdrop of the lockdown. IndieWire instinctively turned to Ethan Hawke to launch the series and set the tone; and at a time when most creatives understandably went dark, Hawke was hungry for the conversation.
Later that summer, the actor-writer-director gave a Ted-Ed talk, “Give yourself permission to be creative.” Even if you haven’t watched the nine-minute talk, you’ve seen it: Excerpts, four years later, still flood most social media feeds on a daily basis.
In the most viral clip, Hawke, discussing what happens to people when they suffer a great loss, said, “Did anyone feel like this before? What is happening to me?...

Dwight Twilley, the singer/songwriter who helped bring the Tulsa Sound to a wider audience, has died at 72. No cause or other details have been revealed.
Twilley was best known for the Top 20 hit singles I’m on Fire (1975) and Girls (1984). He performed with the Dwight Twilley Band with Phil Seymour until 1978, when he went off as a solo act.
Twilley and Seymour eventually decided to leave Tulsa to try to be discovered in Memphis, Tennessee. By sheer chance, the first recording studio that they wandered into was Sun Studio, where they met Jerry Phillips, son of Sun founder Sam Phillips
He referred them to the Tupelo, Mississippi studio of Ray Harris, who added harder edge to their sound.
The two then headed to Los Angeles and signed there with Shelter Records, which had offices in L.A. and Tulsa, coowned by Denny Cordell and Len Russell. They used the...

Steve Garvey, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres all star in the 1970s and 80s, announced a bid for the U.S. Senate seat that was held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca), who died last month.
Garvey is running for the Republican nomination in a state that has been dominated by Democrats, said in an introductory video that he is running a “common sense campaign.”
His launch video also is heavy in images from his baseball stardom, as he tells viewers, “Over 50 years ago I came to California for the first time.”
“I never played for Democrats or Republicans or independents,” he said. “I played for all of you.”
Garvey will compete in an open primary next March, when the top two finishers will go on to the November general election. State voter registration leans heavily Democratic, making up nearly 47%, according to Public Policy Institute of California. Given that dominance,...

We’re just wild about Harry Wild…and so are viewers. They’ve turned this Dublin-set series — about a rambunctious retired literature professor (Jane Seymour) who solves mysteries — into a success, and its star couldn’t be happier. “People are stopping me everywhere,” Seymour says with a laugh. “Especially, believe it or not, academics and professors.” Among Season 2’s puzzlers: the killing of a bridezilla’s matron of honor, an interactive murder-mystery game that turns all too real and a case that leads to a haunted village in Wicklow. Seymour, who spoke to us before the actors’ strike, sets it all up. First off, have you recovered from your Season 1 injury? Jane Seymour: In the first two weeks, I smashed my kneecap and was on crutches most of the time. They [would be] removed and I would act and then get back into a knee brace. But this season I’m definitely running around,...

Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's animated sci-fi comedy series "Futurama" debuted on March 28, 1999. Only a few months earlier, on January 31, Seth McFarlane's animated sitcom "Family Guy" also premiered. They were both primetime animated sitcoms on the same network, and both were part of a wave of "Simpsons"-adjacent shows that tangled the airwaves for years. "Futurama" had the advantage over all the others, however, as it was co-developed by "Simpsons" creator Groening himself. 1999 also saw the release of the "Dilbert" animated series, "Home Movies" on the Upn, "Mission Hill" on the WB, and the stop-motion series "The PJs," as well as "SpongeBob SquarePants," "Batman Beyond," and "Ed, Edd n Eddy." It was a banner year.
As such, "Futurama" and "Family Guy" were often mentioned as a unit in conversations. Many fans of one watched the other, even though one was a sci-fi slapstick program and the other was a crass,...

All good sitcoms have that one random tearjerker episode tossed in, and for "Futurama" that episode is clearly "Jurassic Bark." It gives us the tale of Fry's old dog Seymour, who tries his hardest to find Fry after he's trapped inside a cryogenic chamber. Eventually, Seymour gives up and spends the rest of his life outside the pizza parlor Fry worked at, waiting in vain for Fry to return. It's a dark sequel of sorts to the previous season's "Luck of the Fryrish," which ended on a more heartwarming note with Fry's brother naming his son after him.
"['Luck of the Fryrish'] gave us the right to try for one of these emotional episodes," co-creator David Cohen explained in a panel for Nerdist. "About once a year would you say we do one? So we did 'Jurassic Bark' with Fry's dead dog, which people care much more about than humans for some reason.

Everyone knows Henry VIII had six wives — but as far as filmmakers are concerned, it’s wife No. 2, Anne Boleyn, who has always been the main attraction. Still, cinema and television’s obsession with the Tudors is so intense that wife No. 6 had to have her turn on screen eventually, and so she does in “Firebrand,” a slow-burning drama directed by Karim Ainouz starring Alicia Vikander as Catherine Parr, the woman who was stuck with Henry during his oldest, fattest, sickest and maddest final years.
Adapted from Elizabeth Fremantle’s novel, “Queen’s Gambit”, “Firebrand” tries to present Catherine not as the pious nursemaid from primary school history lessons, but as a rebellious reformer who struggled to save England from tyranny. It almost succeeds.
In the opening scenes of the film, which premiered on Sunday in the Main Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Henry (Jude Law) is away in...

There have been any number of films about Henry VIII and how the English king’s various wives kept losing their heads, but precious few have focused on the one queen who managed to outlive him; Katherine Parr has been a bit player in the likes of 1953’s “Young Bess”, but Karim Aïnouz’s “Firebrand” puts this radically progressive woman of the people at the center of the story in a way that has never been done before.
And yet, despite its righteous attempt to reframe history — an effort supported by the natural steeliness of Alicia Vikander’s performance as a social activist who’s trying to reshape her country without screwing up her marriage to its tyrannical sovereign — this bland period drama can’t help but feel like a familiar tale of court intrigue. Not even Jude Law, whose riveting and revoltingly bellicose take on Henry VIII is equal...
