After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood) and House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek continues his The Best Scene video series by digging into what he feels is the best scene from the 1995 classic Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (watch it Here). Lance’s choice for the best scene in this one is the scene where Billy Zane’s character The Collector gives up his cowboy disguise and reveals his true nature. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above!
Directed by Ernest Dickerson from a screenplay written by Mark Bishop, Ethan Reiff, and Cyrus Voris, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight has the following synopsis: Ex-soldier Frank Brayker is the guardian of an ancient key that can unlock tremendous evil; the sinister but charming...

The New York Underground invaded the mainstream with Robert Downey Sr.’s completely irreverent Madison Avenue satire, in which a token black executive takes over an Ad agency, renames it ‘Truth and Soul’ and goes on a mad reign of creative terror. Arnold Johnson, Stan Gottlieb, Allen Garfield, and Antonio Fargas star in a farce that some critics found intolerably crude — but an independent distributor gave it a national release. 1969 was the year that the Production Code took a tumble — and Downey’s picture proved that freedom of expression was alive and well in the U.S. of A..

Walter Mirisch’s slam-bang, eardrum-pounding Sensurround stock footage orgy for the Centennial Year gathers an impressive lineup of big stars to celebrate the U.S. Navy’s biggest aircraft carrier battle: Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune. Director Jack Smight manages the talky, exposition-laden account of a sprawling, complicated battle rather well, at least in terms of clarity. What is unwatchable pan-scanned on TV isn’t half bad for fans of big-scale war movies. Pi gives us an approximation of Sensurround (I think), and also John Ford’s short subject The Battle of Midway from 1942.

Robert Altman’s first opportunity to cut loose with an entirely personal film is this scattershot comedy that satirizes the American scene, taking pokes at patriotism, greed, and silly police movies. To his favorite eccentrics from M*As*H Bud Cort and Sally Kellerman he adds the new discovery Shelley Duvall; the movie’s like a bag of absurdist jokes that spilled onto a Houston Highway.

In the summer of 1990, Warren Beatty’s labor-of-love, Dick Tracy, became a surprise commercial hit, earned acclaim for its visuals and technical artistry, and went on to win a number of high-profile awards. Its cast was bursting with stars and beloved character actors. So why, 25 years on, does it feel so forgotten?
Certainly, director-producer-star Beatty created a visual masterpiece and proved that “style over substance” isn’t always a bad thing. The design team was limited to the seven colors available to comic strip creator Chester Gould, and the movie reproduces that vivid look as faithfully as any live-action film could. From the spectacular flight across the twilit city that appears under the opening credits, it’s clear that Dick Tracy is something different.
Moments later, Gould’s trademark Rogues’ Gallery villains make their first appearance, brought to life by the makeup of John Caglione, Jr. and Doug Drexler, who...

October 20th is yet another stellar week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, all leading up to our favorite holiday: Halloween. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. And as if that’s not enough, Scream is also busy with two more great releases this Tuesday as well—Bordello of Blood and The Larry Fessenden Collection.
Kino Lorber is reviving another cult classic on Tuesday too—The Oblong Box—which is based on the Edgar Allan Poe tale and co-stars two cinematic legends, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. For those of you Back to the Future fans out there (and really, who isn’t?), Universal is giving the series a few special releases in time for the film’s 30th anniversary and,...

Writer’s Note: This is the second part of my celebration of Ernest Dickerson’s Demon Knight, which turns 20 today. Robert Altman’s foray into film in the 70s left him with a body of work densely packed with revered quality, which enshrined him as one of the great American directors. M*A*S*H, Nashville, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, and 3 Women would have been enough to designate him a worthy auteur, one who spoke a certain mystical anti-Hollywood language with beams of nostalgia resonating from current cinephiles who wonder, “How did they get away with that?”. In case you weren’t convinced that Beyond Fest is just a wacky ball of fun, this past Friday Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight was paired with Joe Begos’ Almost Human. The result was a throw-back trip.
I was going to let this screening slide by with nary a word on the topic until I realized that Tales From The Crypt can always use more of the spotlight. Based on the violent and sexed up EC Comics of the 1950′s, the comic-inspired anthology film from 1972 starred Peter Cushing, Joan Collins, and Ralph Richardson as the eponymous Cryptkeeper. A sequel, The Vault Of Horror, followed in 1973. The series truly took off in 1989, when Tales From The Crypt came to TV, and John Kassir took over the character of the pun-tastic Cryptkeeper, who could very well be considered the best horror host of all-time.

I was trying to figure out what genre Steven Spielberg's The Sugarland Express fits in while preparing today's Movie Club entry. It's definitely got drama as Lou Jean (Goldie Hawn), an ex-con, convinces her husband Clovis (William Atherton) to break out of pre-release four months before he's due to be released free and clear. Their goal is to make a run for Sugarland, Texas where they hope to get their child out of foster care, a child that was removed from their custody due to the misdemeanors that landed them in prison. These two eventually hit the road by hitching a ride with an elderly couple, but the fact the old man won't drive any faster than 30 miles an hour on the freeway results in them stealing the car. A police chase ensues, ultimately resulting in the kidnapping of a police officer (Michael Sacks) and hijacking his cruiser. To...

Recounting his experiences in summer stock, Conrad John Schuck is almost elegiac. His memories evoke images right out of a Judy Garland–Mickey Rooney film in which the kids decide to put on a show in a barn. The living conditions were rugged, the money negligible at best, but boy did they have fun. Ten shows in 11 weeks and the opportunity to tackle a range of roles they wouldn't have the chance to play for another 30 years. And, man, were there characters—from eccentric directors to the summer-stock entrepreneurs, who ran their companies like little fiefdoms and always dressed the part. One was clad in a tuxedo, while another toted "what looked like a 4-foot cigar." Schuck also remembers a borderline-psychotic actor who was off her meds and appeared in the producer's office stark naked, proclaiming that she was a Blackfoot Indian princess.Conrad John SchuckA veteran actor whose credits include Broadway,...

Celebrity Bowling—that unabashedly silly but undeniably entertaining weekly TV show that ran for eight years in the 1970s (from 1971 though ’78) is coming to DVD From S’More Entertainment.
The Celebrity Bowling 3-dvd Collector’s Set will be available on June 14.
Hosted by Jed Allan (CSI: Miami), Celebrity Bowling featured a pair of two-celebrity teams competing on regulation size bowling lanes that were actually installed inside the show’s studio at L.A.’s Kttv Channel 5.
The rules of the game were known as “best ball”—each team member would take a shot on their own lane. If neither bowled a strike, then whoever rolled the worse shot would try to put up a spare on their partner’s lane. Winning teams garnered prizes (usually appliances, but occasionally even cars!) for audience members both present and sitting at home.
Dick Martin and Bob Newhart team up in that Seventies TV staple,...

It's a Walker Birthday, so odds are it's a rum cake.
Sarah celebrates her 40th birthday ... again, and someone meets one of those hot TV plumbers. And there's a rumor that we may actually have a ... Saul sighting!
Join us for the fun and refresh for updates!

And Kitty is having her lines fed to her through an earpiece. Oh, my bad, It just seems that way.
