Reckless Tortuga, the sketch comedy channel run by Jason Schnell, Lindsey Reckis, and Eric Pumphrey, has been entertaining YouTube audiences for years. In 2010, its Online Gamer series garnered lots of attention, and three years later, it has crossed one million subscribers. We talked to the group about its many exciting projects of the past, present, and future. Tubefilter: How does it feel to cross one million YouTube subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans? Reckless Tortuga: It's really an amazing accomplishment for us. When we first started the channel we would have never thought we would reach 1 Million subs. It's truly an honor and really owe it all to the fan base that has supported us for so long now. Tf: What sort of response have you guys received for The cLAN? Any interest in a second season after this one wraps up? Rt: The cLAN has...

With close to one million subscribers, Reckless Tortuga is one of the most popular sketch comedy channels on YouTube. Now, the Machinima-affiliated group is spinning off its most-watched series. The Clan, the newest entry on the Machinima Prime YouTube Original Channel, is a direct offshoot of Reckless Tortuga's The Online Gamer, following that show's main characters as they attempt to bring together a clan that can win a Call of Duty tournament. "We have been working with Machinima for awhile and we are always trying to figure out ways to do stuff together," Reckless Tortuga director Jason Schnell told Tubefilter. "For example, we partnered on short film last year called Hell Michigan. So we were really excited when they called us up and said they were looking for comedy pitches to go on Machinima Prime. We've always in the back of heads had this crazy idea for a large...

There was a unique energy of optimism in La at last night’s Tubefilter Meetup, with a packed room full of video creators of all types came together to check in on where the state of web video is today. The terminology have changed over the years, with some terms serving to define subgroups like the ‘web series crowd,’ the ‘livestreamers,’ the ‘YouTubers’ and the podcasters. But ultimately we’re all talking about the same thing—social video. It’s the concept of creating video for an audience and truly connecting with them using the tools of the internet to do so. That’s the common thread that made last night’s discussion so relevant. It’s hard to ignore the network that does 147 million unique visitors a month. The title was glib—“So You’re a YouTube Partner, Now What?”—a potshot at the myth of overnight millions just...

I first fell in like with Reckless Tortuga after watching Psycho Girlfriend. Lindsey Reckis plays the role of highly insecure, emotionally erratic significant other to Tommy Savas’ comforting chill dude demeanor. She takes his innocuous asides to hyperbolic proportions, asks leading questions, and sets him up for failure in a way that varies from a touch to a helluva lot more absurd than our real-life interactions with a few choice ex-loved ones. In addition to telling tales of how crazy the ladies can be (amiright, fellas?!), Reckless Tortuga takes on obsessive gamers, killing zombies, dysfunctional theater groups, ghosthunters with attitudes, mail-order brides, douchebags you work with, and inane PSAs in a handful of web series that never fail to entertain. What started as a Let’s-throw-this-video-up-on-YouTube lark for Reckis and her Reckless companions, Eric Pumphrey and Jason Schnell, has turned into a sustainable business of making a living by making...
