A pair of new projects are currently being prepped by writer/director Rich Robinson (who co-scripted and -helmed 2007’s Marcus) and producer/cinematographer Neil Moore for Backwoods Entertainment. One is a creature feature called The Colony, and the other is a youth-oriented horror/comedy in the Monster Squad vein titled The Slayers.
The Colony is set in the town of Eden Mills, where local sheriff Nick Whittaker must protect the residents from a pack of wolflike predators that dwell in an abandoned mineshaft. One of those beasts will make an appearance in The Slayers, which focuses on a group of misfit kids who team up to fight monsters threatening them and their neighbors. Robinson and Moore have shot teasers for both projects, which can be viewed at The Colony’s official website here and The Slayers’ site here.

On display at this week's Afm were a slew of character posters for Robert Rodriguez's highly anticipated MacHete. While they were all under lock and key, we were able to snap a shot of Jessica Alba in the film, which can be viewed beyond the break. Ethan Maniquis co-directed the film starring Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, Jeff Fahey, Elise Avellan, Electra Avellan and Tom Savini. Machete is a Mexican ex-Federale with a gift for wielding a blade, who hides out as a day laborer, who is double-crossed by a corrupt state senator. »

In 1968, director George A. Romero transformed cinematic zombies from a bunch of brain-damaged Haitians working on farms to a cannibalistic apocalyptic plague with Night of the Living Dead. The influential film was also helped solidify horror as a genre which filmmakers could experiment with fantasy as social allegory, draping metaphor in flayed skin and decorative loops of intestine. Following Night of the Living Dead, Romero has re-visited the well of the living dead five times and counting, with Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, diary of the Dead, and this year’s Survival of the Dead. Today, in the inaugural podcast from Sound on Sight spinoff show, your hosts Ricky D, Detroit Burns, and Al Kratina discuss George A. Romero’s influential zombie series starting with the original trilogy. listen now [1] Download the show in a new window [2] Music Tracks: ¨Out of Limits¨ - »

Night of the Living Dead For a horror film, Night of the Living Dead (1968) is set in an usual local; not Transylvania, but Pennsylvania. Almost universally panned by critics when released, the film eventually developed a cult following, playing on the midnight movie circuit for more than a decade and becoming one of the most influential horror films since Psycho. The film spawned five sequels, and innumerable remakes and clones. Often imitated, but never duplicated, Night of the Living Dead launched director George A. Romero on the path to become the king of Zombiedom. Although the word "zombie" is never used in the film, the living dead carried with them most of the characteristics to be found in later zombie movies, and pushed zombies towards taking center stage as arguably the centerpiece of popular horror. Romero has readily admitted that Herk Harvey's Carnival of Souls (1962) was a big influence »

Earlier this year, Fango exposed readers to a short film winning much acclaim in the UK titled The Soldier (you can read about it here). At the time, it was hinted that the movie might spawn a full-length feature, and Fango got word from director Shaun Robert Smith that The 4th Reich is moving ahead, shooting next spring with some pretty big names and exciting prospects.
“This is going to be the mother of all zombie films,” Smith tells Fango; he also passed on the production art seen here. “Not just that, but a heavy historical aspect too; you could say we are working on a war film with zombies. And to add to the joyride, it’ll be in 3-D! In fact, we will be one of the first 3-D films to emerge from the UK ever.”
Reich takes place in 1944 after the victories of D-Day, and follows a »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

In the Robert Rodriguez-scripted/directed first of its two conjoined movies, Grindhouse is the ultimate sugar rush for horror fans, a high-calorie, low-nutrition blast of cheap thrills wrought on a big budget. In the second, Quentin Tarantino upends the framework and traditions of exploitation fare to craft a film that’s just as much a showcase for his gift of (writing) gab as it is for action. And in both Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, a love and respect shines through for the B-movie tradition that too many others “homage” with snarky irony. The wholeheartedness with which they express their devotion to the form almost amounts to a kind of innocence, and for all the explicit mayhem on screen, »

True to its name, the Scream Awards is an award show where the winners are decided by the biggest scream, like talent shows of olden days, before text messaging and toll-free numbers were invented. In this case, Scream winners are decided by internet votes. It's not surprising to then see current trend-grabbing vampires dominate the show; but the awards, it seemed, are secondary. The highlights of the night are all the honorary awards, celebrating the legends of their own mediums.
It was a little disconcerting to notice that the award winners were all telegraphed by the adoring cheers of the audience, too. The more enthusiastic the cheers, the likelier for that person to win. Vampires are definitely in this year, with notable appearances/wins for Twilight, True Blood, The Vampire's Assistant and Let the Right One In.
The most telling part of the award show being entertainment first-recognition second is »
