Ruud Satijn was born on December 17, 1970 in Den Bosch, the Netherlands. Satijn's father, Anton Satijn, was a cellist in the Brabant Symphony Orchestra in the Netherlands. One of the specialties of this orchestra was the musical accompaniment of silent films. By going to these screenings Satijn saw famous classics such as Napoleon (Abel Gance), La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (Dreyer) and Battleship Potemkin (Eisenstein) for the first time as a teenager and his love for film grew.
After graduating from High School, he moved to Texas where he worked on a farm and traveled around the country. A year later Ruud started the HBO school Audio Visual Production in Sittard. The educational program was not outstanding, but there he teamed up with a group of people that found their friendship in the love for film. Together they shot their first short films on video. Among these people were Martin Koolhoven and Frank van den Eeden. With these two, Satijn moved to the Filmschool Sint Lucas in Brussels, to return to Holland after a year.
Finally in Amsterdam Satijn went to the Dutch Filmacademy. He produced Koolhoven's first 16mm film Chess, but then teamed up with Kim van Kooten who wrote his first 35mm short Nighthawks. It was his first film as a director at the 1994 Dutch Filmfestival in Utrecht.
Satijn moved on to work for the VPRO on Villa Achterwerk and graduated with the Scarlet Seduction from Filmschool. After graduating, he focused on writing first. He also directed commercials. His short films have won several awards at international festivals and have been screened worldwide. Ruud now works on his feature film debut.
