The Conga Room is closing its doors.
The Los Angeles institution will bow out of the city’s nightlife scene after 25 years with one more final hurrah on March 27. Billed as a “farewell celebration,” the final night will be steered by investors Jimmy Smits and Paul Rodriguez and feature performances and appearances by Gilberto Santa Rosa (aka “el caballero de la salsa”) among other notable names (yet to be announced) from the worlds of music, politics and culture.
Opened in 1999 on Wilshire Boulevard by entrepreneur Brad Gluckstein, the Conga Room counted Smits, Rodriguez, Jennifer Lopez and Sheila E. as investors. The Conga Room became a go-to nightlife, special events and concert destination that boosted culture, music and entertainment. An extravagant tapestry of slick Afro-Latin pop, Ozuna’s much anticipated fifth album ‘Ozutochi’ delivers more of the laid-back grooves and nocturnal hooks that made the Puerto Rican vocalist’s ascent to global stardom look like a natural consequence.
This sprawling 18-track collection has a luxurious, tropical-flower-in-bloom feel. It’s a poignant, occasionally adolescent, love letter to the transformational beauty of reggaetón, mapping the genre’s odyssey from underground movement to international juggernaut. If, by now, you’re understandably suffering from the occasional bout of reggaetón fatigue, Ozuna wants to remedy that.

Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo dominated the announcement of the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards nominations, garnering 10, including nods in all three top categories — album of the year (for “Mis Manos”), record of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Amen”) and song of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Dios Así Lo Quiso”).
Also faring well with multiple nods were Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra with six, Spanish rapper C. Tangana with five and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny with four.
Most of these top-nominated artists have enjoyed multiple trips to the podium in previous years— especially Guerra, a 20-time Latin Grammy winner. C. Tangana and Bad Bunny have won twice before. But with his staggering 10 nominations this year, Camilo comes into the ceremony only ever having won once before, for last year’s best pop song (his acceptance appearance is pictured above).
The 22nd annual show airs on Univision Nov. 18 live at 8 p.

After swatting back the Covid-19 scourge to some extent, Puerto Rico opened its ports in June 2020. With the year-long curfew lifted in May this year, it’s been business as usual on this Caribbean island of roughly 3,500 square miles.
The capital of San Juan held its first live audience concert on June 26, 2021 with salsa icon Gilberto Santa Rosa playing to thousands at the Puerto Rico Convention Center for the first time since the pandemic closed it down. According to Asm Global regional manager Jorge Perez, 15 other concerts have been announced, with 10 already sold out.
International acts are also coming in as most U.S. mainland venues remain closed. Plunging cases and a relatively high vaccination rate (up to 70%) has brought some semblance of normality and a growing number of location shoots to the U.S. territory, albeit with health and safety protocols still in place.

After years of being the dance pros to the stars on "Dancing With the Stars," Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy shine center stage in Broadway's "Forever Tango" which opened Sunday (July 14).
Of course they have wracked up tons of awards and everyone knows who the true dancing talent is on the ABC show, but to see them unfettered by those who can't dance, and owning the stage at the limited engagement at the Walter Kerr Theatre is a huge treat.
Not a word is spoken during the show; none are needed.
It is more of a recital with different couples each performing classical Argentine tango.
An 11-piece orchestra, including four accordion players, stays on the bare stage. Five-time Grammy winner Gilberto Santa Rosa, a hugely popular singer in the Latino market, breaks up the dance numbers, singing in Spanish. The crowd cheered when "The Gentleman of Salsa," entered, and he's terrific.
