Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kevin Bacon co-star.

Flow: For Love of Water - Irena Salina's directorial debut examines the privatization and potential crisis of a worldwide water crisis with a brilliant amount of breadth and depth. Most surprisingly of all, this is one of the most inspiring and hopeful documentaries of the year.
Up the Yangtze - Equal parts heart-wrenching coming of age tale and geopolitical expose, Yung Chang's directorial debut follows two teenagers working on the Farewell Cruiseship lines giving westerners tours of the rural villages that would soon be (and now have been) engulfed by the Three Gorges Dam project. [Jeffrey Anderson's review >>]...

Like much of what we see in the documentary genre these days, Irena Salina’s messily impassioned exposé of the world water crisis -- the film debuted at the 2008 Sundance and won an International Jury Prize at Mumbai this year -- will, by dint of its arthouse release trajectory, bypass those not already in the know (that is, those who really need to see it) and end up preaching mostly to a choir that’s already on its side. Salina traveled the world to gather the anecdotes and scary stories collected here: yes, there is indeed a global water crisis playing out beyond the view of most Westerners, and it goes way beyond the absurdity we’ve been trained to get used to, of paying for water in a bottle when we used to get the same thing out of a tap for free. But even as multinational corporations attempt...

Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock may be responsible for making documentaries more popular, profitable and mainstream-accessible, but from an artistic point of view, their influence has been far less enriching. The rise in cutesy graphics, the preference for superficial contentions conveyed by cursory human-interest vignettes, and the employment of spurious causation arguments have become the norm in domestic non-fiction filmmaking, with only the rare exception -- anything by Werner Herzog, Tony Kaye's in-depth Lake of Fire -- to remind viewers that serious, comprehensive explorations of real-world stories and topics are still viable. Alas, the latest politically conscious doc to hit stateside, Irena Salina's Flow: For Love of Water, is another example of the -Moore-ish technique, not because it mimics his aesthetic -- her approach and tone are of a sober, graphics-free sort -- but because it tackles an important topic in a dubious manner. Jumping back and forth between various issues,...

Some might be quick to dismiss this week as part of the post-summer lull, but others might see it as a week of films that have been years in the making . it's been 13 since the now re-paired Robert De Niro and Al Pacino were last on screen together, while Diane English's remake of "The Women" took 12 to make it to the big screen, and the Flaming Lips' "Christmas on Mars" spent a mere seven years in the offing. As for fans of the Coen brothers, it only seems like forever since "No Country for Old Men."
"Able Danger"
Another week, another 9/11 conspiracy film, this one actually getting released on the seventh anniversary of the tragedy. Loosely inspired by "The Maltese Falcon," this Dv noir offers something of a date movie for far-left conspiracy theorists who take issue with perceived abuse of power on the part of our government.

Just in time for the Berlin International Film Festival, Myriad Films has picked up foreign sales rights to Fred Durst's directorial debut, The Education of Charlie Banks, and Celluloid Dreams has nabbed foreign sales rights to the Sundance docu competition entry Flow: For the Love of Water.
The filmmakers behind Irena Salina's global eco-docu Flow will donate 1% of their profits from any sale to the charity 1% for the Planet, which benefits ecological charities worldwide.
Anchor Bay Entertainment picked up North American theatrical and DVD rights in October to the coming-of-age drama Banks. The film, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Jason Ritter and Eva Amurri, won the Made in New York Award at last year's Tribeca Film Festival and hits theaters this year.
Myriad and Celluloid have non-North American rights to the projects. Josh Braun of Submarine is repping North American Flow sales.
