As the production designer of Minx, Jefferson Sage was able to pull from his own past to create an old-school magazine. The process of publishing has changed a lot since the ’70s, but Sage knew he could find the research materials in his own archives.
Created by Ellen Rapoport, Minx takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, where Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond) is planning to start her own feminist magazine. Doug (Jake Johnson) is the only publisher willing to give her a chance, but the result is not what she originally planned as together they create the first erotic magazine for women. A key location in the series is the office of Bottom Dollar Publications, where the magazine was put together.
For the color palette of the series, Sage managed to find an old Sears Catalog to pin down the exact colors that were popular at the time. The catalog also provided...

In the world of HBO Max’s period comedy Minx, Jake Johnson’s Bottom Dollar publisher Doug is king — and production designer Jeff Sage, along with set decorator Doug Mowat, helped build his castle.
The first season of HBO Max’s dramedy Minx is most obviously a time capsule of feminism, capitalism, race and sexuality, but it’s also a rare look back into the world of ’70s publishing. Sage tells The Hollywood Reporter when it came to the show’s main publishing environment, Bottom Dollar, they weren’t recreating the “very high gloss Playboy look where they really spent money on photography and beautiful models.” Instead, this was “low-rent soft-pornography.”
“In the day, that was a thriving business, that whole world of sort of B-magazines where the models aren’t that attractive, the photography is pretty lame, the sets and bathing suits are very simple,...

In “Coming 2 America,” Eddie Murphy’s character, Prince Akeem Joffer, lives in a sprawling fictional palace called Zamundan, but in reality, it is the mega-mansion of one of rap’s biggest names — Biggest Boss Rick Ross.
Ross offered his estate to the producers of the film and mentioned in a virtual tour of the home that it is, indeed, used in Murphy’s latest. In the video, Ross says there are usually “18-20 people” who want to see the mansion and that his team charges them an entry fee to look around. Other films that have shot at the location include “Superfly.”
The palatial home in Woosley, Georgia, was the former residence of boxing legend Evander Holyfield and spans over 109 rooms, 235 acres and more than 50,000 square feet, with Google Maps listing the location as a museum.

Eddie Murphy’s return as Prince Akeem Joffer in “Coming 2 America” (streaming now on Prime Video) brings the comedy franchise back to the fictional Zamunda, home to the royal family and its future heir.
Much of the Zamunda setting was recreated in Georgia, with the palatial palace brought to life courtesy of rapper Rick Ross, who opened the doors of his estate on the outskirts of Atlanta to the film’s production team.
Says production designer Jefferson Sage: “Our big problem was, where do we find a house that had the scale of the possibilities for a very lavish palace?”
Sage and his team scouted multiple locations before zeroing in on the Ross estate, which would serve as the bones of the lush royal palace.
The 45,000 square-foot mansion in Fayetteville, Ga. sits on 235 acres and was previously owned by boxer Evander Holyfield. With 12 bedrooms and a dining room that seats up to 100 people,...

"The Furniture" is our weekly series on Production Design. Here's Daniel Walber on Ghostbusters, just out on DVD and Blu-Ray
Paul Feig movies tend to be about comic excess. There’s always a nearly too much humor jammed in, not infrequently with the side effect of a bloated running time. To be fair, there would be more time for Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones to adlib about dancing if Ghostbusters weren’t also required to have a number of standard narrative beats, but that’s Hollywood.
The point is that Ghostbusters, like Spy, displays a remarkable dedication to extravagant nonsense. Its excessive approach, pushing every joke as far as it can go, is also true of its design. Production designer Jefferson Sage, Oscar-winning set decorator Leslie A. Pope (Seabiscuit) and the rest of the design team provide a a unifying absurdity in both color and texture that keeps Ghostbusters on a collision course with comedy.

If you’d told me that the worst thing about a new Ghostbusters film would be Bill Murray, I would have laughed in your face. And yet… here we are. Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters is, above all else, a real Ghostbusters movie. If you’re a fan of the 1984 original (as most comedy fans are), one of the things that’s interesting as you watch this one is the way it echoes off of that film. It is no simple remake, but neither is it a radical reinvention of the core idea. It’s simply a different riff on the same idea, with a solid dose of fan service thrown in to help make the transition from the old to the new. The script, by Feig and Katie Dippold, does some big things different, and the choices they make are intriguing. First and foremost, though, Ghostbusters is a big fat slice of silly summer entertainment,...

Oscar-nominee Melissa McCarthy plays Tammy in New Line Cinema’s comedy Tammy, a Warner Bros. Pictures release.
Marking Ben Falcone’s directorial debut, check out the latest trailer before the film hits theaters on July 2nd.
Tammy (McCarthy) is having a bad day. She’s totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint, and instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbor in her own house.
It’s time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she’s broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl (Sarandon), is her only option—with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. But on the road, with grandma riding shot gun, it may be just what Tammy needs.

Last night the Art Directors Guild (Adg) announced their nominees for Excellence in Production Design and I felt it's high time I open up my Best Art Direction predictions for the 2012 Oscars. What better time than now considering we have a guide to help us along our way? To begin, the only film not nominated by the Adg that I would say of the films not nominated by the Adg that may have a shot at an Oscar nomination in this category would be Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Albert Nobbs, Jane Eyre, A Dangerous Method, War Horse and potentially Madonna's W.E.. Thing is, the Adg breaks their noms out by genre and you can only fit so many into that Period Film category, but this is also just one of the indicators that just because a film was nominated for the Guild Awards means others won't be considered for the Oscar.

As anyone who watched James Franco's take on Oscar hosting can tell you, Hollywood award shows can be weird, weird things. Whether it's Adrien Brody planting a kiss on Halle Berry or just Ricky Gervais insulting everyone in the audience, things can get strange very fast.
But for certain awards, they don't need all the fanfare (or malice) to entice audiences; sometimes the nominees alone are enough. The Art Directors Guild awards fall squarely into this category, with their wide-ranging nominees for excellence in production design, announced last night. Where else would "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," "Captain America," and "Anonymous" all be nominated for something?
The announcement of the winners will be made at the annual awards ceremony on Feb. 4.
Check out the list of nominees:

The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for its 16th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards, to be handed out Feb. 4 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Art Direction may not be at the top of your priority list for movies or TV, but I think it should be higher than many people hold it. Without art direction the tone of what you watch would be greatly impacted. I love being transported into a unique universe, and art direction helps make my movie and TV viewing experiences more enjoyable.

Following the Producer’s Guild of America announcement this morning, the Art Directors Guild have announced their nominations for best Production design this year. An overlooked category, this is an area that can make or break a film for me. The lack of effort in War Horse‘s production design hurt the film for me, whereas the impeccable detail in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy elevates it to another level.
The latter was recognized, along with the much-deserving Captain America: The First Avenger and Spielberg’s other 2011 film The Adventure of Tintin, both in the fantasy categories. Also showing up was Cowboys & Aliens, whose production design is one of the only deserving elements to recognize. It was no surprise to see Drive and The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo show up in the contemporary category with their immaculate design, with Bridesmaids getting an outside nom. Check out all the film nominations below.
