One of Banijay’s scripted centrepieces at the London TV Screenings, the Swedish crime drama “Fallen” (“Sanningen”), sees the first reunion of star actor Sofia Helin, writer Camilla Ahlgren, and Stockholm-based Filmlance International since the multi-season hit crime show “The Bridge” (2011-2018).
Their collaboration has paid off again as “Fallen” has wooed a first batch of global sellers – including MHz Choice for the U.S. and Canal+’s Polar+ for France – and more than 1.1 million combined viewers watched the first episode on Swedish commercial broadcaster TV4 last Christmas.
“This is 1/10of the Swedish population, which is astonishing these days, considering the series is based on an original idea,” said producer Anna Wallmark of Banijay-owned Filmlance.
Created by Ahlgren, who serves as head-writer, next to co-writers Martin Asphaug and Alex Haridi, the six-part series is, however, a very different type of noir to the cross-border iconic “The Bridge,” Lighter, more emotional.

Exclusive: The Bridge creator Hans Rosenfeldt has said he is “not really watching crime shows at the moment,” as he talks up his big-budget Viaplay adaptation of fantasy novel Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, the streamer’s “most ambitious project to date.”
Rosenfeldt is deep in the edit on Ronja, which is being shopped at this week’s London TV Screenings, and he said adapting the Astrid Lindgren Swedish adventure classic has made a refreshing change from his decades of writing crime.
“I am not really watching crime shows at the moment,” said Rosenfeldt, who has penned four seasons of smash Scandi noir hit The Bridge, three of ITV/Netflix’s Marcella and several crime novels. “I have worked in crime for 30 years and whenever I work I’m working on crime so when I watch something or read something I like it to be something else.”

Exclusive: Hans Rosenfeldt, the formidable Swedish screenwriter behind The Bridge and Marcella, has found his next project: Adapting Cj Tudor’s new bestselling novel The Burning Girls into a TV series.
Rosenfeldt will work with Marcella producer Buccaneer Media to adapt the book after the production company secured the rights in a competitive situation. Tudor’s story became a Sunday Times bestseller after it was published in January.
The book follows Reverend Jack Brooks and her daughter as they make a fresh start in Chapel Croft, but soon the close-knit community’s dark history begins to reveal itself. Some 500 years ago, eight martyrs were burnt to death in Chapel Croft; 30 years ago two teenagers vanished without trace; and two months ago, the vicar committed suicide.

ITV crime drama Marcella was always intended to be a trilogy, according to actor Anna Friel, but a return after season three is possible. Speaking to Hello Magazine ahead of the UK season launch last month, Friel said that “the end of the third season is very much left open. I guess it depends on how much the viewers here like it.”
Marcella season three was released on Netflix outside the UK in summer 2020, but ITV fans had to wait until January 2021 to find out what happened next to the troubled detective after she was recruited as an undercover officer at the close of season two. The new run of episodes is set against the backdrop of a Belfast crime family infiltrated by the detective in her new guise as ‘Keira Devlin’. Can Marcella bring down the powerful, drug-dealing, gun-importing, people-trafficking Maguires, or might she decide to join them?

One issue links four of the five contenders for the Nordisk Film & TV Prize this year, including “Sisterhood.” Given ease of travel and cost, co-produced series are four times more likely to be crime, thriller or suspense titles than any other genre, according to Ampere Analysis. The challenge then, is to stand out in this highly competitive field.
Nordic Noir achieved that over a decade ago, bringing a chillingly darker edge to comfy European procedurals. Yet almost as soon as it was consecrated, its founding fathers attempted to broaden its reach, adding a marked social edge; setting it in London with an iconic British actor; or opening up to issues such as international terrorism.

The 2010s was the decade that foreign-language television broke through the global ceiling and got Hollywood to notice the quality of content coming from all corners of the world. While Danish drama The Killing (Forbrydelsen) and French thrillers Braquo and Spiral began inching the door open in the “aughties,” hyper local titles and the booming streaming market means that Netflix subscribers are just as likely to binge Spanish drama La Casa De Papel (Money Heist) or German supernatural thriller Dark as they are the new season of The Crown.
Netflix’s VP International Originals Kelly Luegenbiehl recently told a London conference that “Hollywood is not the be-all and end-all of storytelling,” and “this is really just the beginning.” Georgia Brown, European content chief at Amazon, agreed that “language is kind of irrelevant now.”

As the fourth and final series of hit Danish-Swedish TV series The Bridge plays around the world, a Serbia-Croatia version is “nearly greenlit,” says Lars Blomgren, executive producer and MD of Swedish production company Filmlance.
At Goteborg’s TV Drama Vision conference this week, he also said the fourth remake, from Germany-Austria, was now shooting. That follows three earlier remakes: UK-France, Us-Mexico and Estonia-Russia. There will be more, he predicts, “There are plans on many parts of the planet.”
Sofia Helin, who plays Swedish detective Saga Noren in the hit show, said she was ready to move onto new projects but proud of creating the “feminist role model” that is her character. “I’m happy we created Saga, she has meant a lot to not only people who identify with her condition [the character is on the autism spectrum] but just as a female...

1. “BoJack Horseman” Season 3 (available July 22)
Why Should I Watch It? “BoJack Horseman” is a literal and figurative treasure trove of joy, insight and harsh truths. On the literal side, so many small moments pop up throughout the 30-minute episodes it takes repeat viewings to appreciate them all — from the .gif-worthy transitionary bits to the heavy-hitting quips. Yet figuratively, “BoJack” offers up a distinct, strong viewpoint that isn’t afraid to take questions to an existential level, which creates deeper subjective realizations each time you watch (and re-watch, and re-watch, and re-watch…). This is as “must-see” as TV gets — every time.
Best Episode: We wouldn’t dare spoil the new season — not even by telling you what episode to look forward to — and we’ve already covered Season 2. (After much deliberation, we chose “Escape From L.A.” as the best episode.) So let’s just set this time aside to honor the...

We chatted to the Swedish creator of The Bridge about series 4, the Scandi-noir label and UK crime drama Marcella...
As his first English-language series Marcella comes out on DVD, we spoke to Swedish screenwriter and novelist Hans Rosenfeldt about the writing process, the differences between British and Swedish television production, and the future of his hugely acclaimed home-grown crime drama, The Bridge…
What did you find most appealing about Marcella when you first heard the pitch?
Well, I was pitched the idea by Nicola Larder (Marcella’s co-creator and executive producer). We met in Italy and were talking about The Bridge, and she actually pitched me an idea about this female detective being left by her husband and bringing back an old case. I really liked that because it sounded like something I could probably work with. The opportunity to work abroad was what really attracted me,...

As UK remake The Tunnel returns, we celebrate Swedish/Danish crime drama The Bridge...
9pm, Saturday night, BBC Four. For the few of us who still, on occasion, watch television when it’s actually broadcast, that timeslot means only one thing: high-quality drama from outside the anglophone world. Okay, so some of the series are less impressive than others, and one or two are in English (remember Australia’s The Code?) but these are exceptions to the rule. What began as a fad, accompanied by much reductive talk of ‘Scandi noir’ and a mildly disturbing national obsession with Sarah Lund’s knitwear, has culminated in a golden age for telly addicts. Our initial resistance to subtitles has faded, and a whole world of often beautifully acted, compellingly plotted drama has opened up. We haven’t strayed very far outside Europe yet, but it’s a start.
