As the U.K. lockdown wears on and our reality still feels inconceivable, a TV show about a surreal TV drama became appointment viewing this week, underlining the lifeline that broadcasting has become to millions of people.
Commercial broadcaster ITV consistently drew more than five million viewers across three nights for “Quiz,” from “The Crown” producer Left Bank Pictures, a superb dramatization of the true story of a cheating scandal on ITV’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” in 2001.
Based on James Graham’s eponymous play, the series depicted “Fleabag” star Sian Clifford and scene-stealing “Succession” actor Matthew Macfadyen as couple Diana and Charles Ingram, who were accused of cheating on the hit show via a coughing accomplice in the audience, and eventually stood trial.

Quiz episode 3
Quiz might be set in the early 2000s, with all the bootcut jeans, Sugababes and Sir Trevor Macdonald that entails, but it’s a drama about now. Not now-now, but the last existential crisis before this one – or maybe two ago, before climate catastrophe and Coronavirus – the one about the truth.
When James Graham’s play was being written, one consequence of the reality TV boom, fact-adjacent Facebook ads and interbreeding in the worlds of advertising, celebrity and politics was moving its furniture into the White House. The UK had watched a referendum campaign fought by mostly shrugs on one side and custom bus decals on the other. People were sick of experts. News was fake. It was the post-truth era.
That’s the context for episode three, which is mired in the trickiness of facts vs lies. ‘The bottom’s falling out of the truth market,...

One of the challenges surrounding AMC and ITV drama Quiz, which explores the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? cheating scandal in the UK, was how it was going to portray the television executives at the center of it.
The show, produced by The Crown producer Left Bank and starring Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen, The Good Fight’s Michael Sheen and Fleabag’s Sian Clifford, tells the story of Charles Ingram, a former British army major, who caused a major scandal in the early 2000s after being caught cheating his way to winning £1 million on the game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? It tells how Ingram, his wife Diana and an accomplice, Tecwen Whittock, who was sitting in the audience, allegedly pulled off the on-screen heist before being caught and standing trial.

Simon Cowell Tries To Deflect Flak From ‘Red Or Black?’ The music and TV mogul said today “human error” was to blame after a man who did time for domestic abuse, Nathan Hageman, won the £1M jackpot on the game show’s opening night. Producer Cowell said that ITV bosses were “delighted” with Red or Black? despite the cloud over the debut and predicted that the show would be in 30 territories –-including the Us-– within 12 months. He described as “disgusting” the allegations of violence against a woman, but stopped short of urging Hageman to hand back his jackpot. “I know what I would do,” he said. “I would give away part of the money to the person he had the altercation with and a charity.” Also today, news emerged that ITV ordered a pilot episode of Red or Black? eight years ago, but decided the skill-free format wouldn’t work.

LONDON -- Living TV said Thursday it has appointed former ITV head of entertainment Claudia Rosencrantz to the post of head of the Living TV channel. Rosencrantz, who left ITV after former Granada U.S. head Paul Jackson was drafted into the new position of head of comedy and drama earlier this year, replaces former Living TV head Richard Woolfe, now head of Sky One. Rosencrantz will oversee programming strategy, commissioning, acquisitions, scheduling and marketing for Living and Living 2, reporting to Lisa Opie, managing director of Flextech, NTL's programming arm.
LONDON -- ITV is set for executive changes after sources said Monday that director of programs Nigel Pickard will likely quit the network this week. His move is expected to come at the same time that Granada America chief Paul Jackson announces a decision to return to the U.K. to take up the newly created post of director of comedy and entertainment. Jackson's enhanced role would see him add oversight of comedy to the entertainment portfolio run by outgoing entertainment commissioning head Claudia Rosencrantz.
Granada America CEO Paul Jackson may be returning soon to his native U.K. to take a big post with broadcaster ITV, parent company of Granada, according to sources in Los Angeles, where Jackson is based. He is understood to be "in the running" to replace Claudia Rosencrantz as the broadcaster's head of entertainment commissioning, London's Guardian newspaper reported Thursday. Sources in the U.S. confirmed that Jackson is a serious contender for the post. A spokesman said, "There is no announcement, but obviously Paul is the caliber of executive that the company would be interested in." Jackson is understood to be on vacation and could not be reached about the U.K. post. He has been at the helm of Granada America for two years, having served before that as director of international production at Granada. He spent two years as CEO of Granada Productions Australia. Before that, he spent four years as BBC Entertainment controller. Granada America is a leading producer of reality shows, with shows in production at many of the major broadcast and cable networks, including Hell's Kitchen and Nanny 911 for Fox. Jackson is said to be one of several candidates that ITV director of television Simon Shaps has had conversations with about the entertainment job, according to the Guardian. Other names linked to the post include Mark Wells, controller of entertainment at ITV Prods., and Duncan Gray, the former Granada entertainment programming executive who moved to Los Angeles three years ago to work at ABC.
