Review: The Men Who Stare at Goats

7 November 2009 6:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We're told at the beginning of The Men Who Stare at Goats that "more of this is true than you would believe." But the story of the U.S. Army's attempts to harness psychic powers to create super-soldiers is so bizarre it almost Has to be true, in accordance with the "how could anyone make this up?" principle. In fact, I believe more of this admittedly fictionalized story than I do of The Fourth Kind, which claims to be 100 percent true. Surely there's a lesson in there.

Based on Jon Ronson's nonfiction book, The Men Who Stare at Goats stars Ewan McGregor as Bob Wilton, a journalist covering the Iraq War in 2003. Bob meets a man named Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), a private contractor with an unusual past: He claims to have worked for the government as a psychic spy. Bob once met a man, back home in Michigan »

When Bob finds out that his wife Debora (Rebecca Mader) plans to leave him for his editor, he decides that he needs to prove his manhood – and what better place to prove your manhood than Iraq in the mid-aughts. But when Bob finds himself stranded in Kuwait, with no valid excuse to cross the border, he meets a guy by the name of Lyn Cassady (George Clooney). Bob recognizes Lyn’s name from an interview he did earlier in his career with a seemingly self-proclaimed psychic spy, Gus Lacey (Stephen Root). Bob realizes that it is his destiny to learn more about Lyn – who Gus previously cited as one of the foremost psychic spies. Next thing we know, »

Clooney's 'Men Who Stare at Goats' Fun But Forgettable

5 November 2009 9:25 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

At times, The Men Who Stare at Goats seems like it could be a minor entry in the Coen brothers’ filmography. Quirky dialogue and a few Coens alumni—George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, and Stephen Root—populate the film, and it certainly veers toward the surreal. Though the movie gets a few laughs with its absurdist humor and winks at the audience, it never reaches the inspired lunacy of the Coens’ previous work, or even approaches the heights of similar war satires such as Three Kings and Catch-22.

Despite elements that make it seem more science fiction than non-fiction, the debut from actor/writer Grant Heslov is based on Jon Ronson’s factual book. Ewan McGregor employs a slightly distracting American accent to play Bob Wilton, an Ann Arbor journalist. In investigating a routine story, he interviews Gus Lacey (Root). At first, Lacey's stories about life as a psychic spy seem crazy, »

Californication Review: "Slow Happy Boys"

25 October 2009 9:17 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

This week's episode of Californication was called "Slow Happy Boys," but it's another installment of men behaving badly, with Hank and Charlie doing their usual thing and guest star Kevin Corrigan playing Hank's wayward former best-friend, Mike Zlosowski, or "Zlos."

Zlos just doesn't know how to behave in La - apparently, he doesn't know proper etiquette for dealing with lap dancing strippers and misleading transexuals. He's getting an education this weekend, nonetheless.

Hank is screwing around some more with his student, Jackie. We like Jackie as a character, but it just gets annoying that Hank sleeps with everyone. It's totally predictable now, and since the romantic conflict between Hank and Karen is null (since characters are abiding by a "don't ask don't tell" policy), there really is nothing exciting about Hank's sexual exploits.

But, me thinks there is hope! Since Karen surprised Hank with a visit, tensions are sure to grow! »

The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009) Movie Review

24 October 2009 1:12 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

The Men Who Stare at Goats”, starring and produced by George Clooney, is an adaption of Jon Ronson’s 2004 nonfiction book about alleged psychic experiments conducted by the U.S. military. Like “The Informant!”, another Clooney-produced movie, “Goats” is ostensibly based on true events, but has clearly stretched the facts for the sake of getting laughs. The movie aims to be a “Catch-22” or “Dr. Strangelove” style spoof of the absurdities of military bureaucracy, but ultimately it’s more of a gentle, loving send-up than the sharp satire it could have been. Ewan McGregor is Bob Wilton, a stand-in for author Ronson, who’s a down on his luck newspaper reporter in Michigan. Wilton’s wife has left him for another man (who wears a prosthetic arm apparently borrowed from Dr. No), and he’s not exactly getting the plum assignments these days. For one of his stories, he interviews »
