Based on the television show of the same name that ran for five seasons from 1981-86 and starred Lee Majors and Heather Thomas, director David Leitch’s new film, The Fall Guy, employs the same combination of action and sexual tension that fueled the show (albeit not necessarily between the two main characters). This approach makes for an entertaining and somewhat nostalgic aura around a film that, if approached a different way, could have resulted in another disappointing cinematic adaptation of a popular television property.

At the beginning of Chad Stahelski's epic action picture "John Wick: Chapter 4," the title character has been excommunicated from an ultra-dangerous, ultra-secret assassins guild -- the High Table -- that he and thousands of other professional assassins belong to. As the "John Wick" movies have progressed, the edicts of the High Table have become more and more complicated, and the rules of the films' assassin universe have become nearly impossible to comprehend. Luckily, John Wick -- and the audience -- can rest assured that there are "safe zones" in the world where murder shenanigans are not allowed. At the exclusive, assassins-only Continental Hotel, a high-end, privately run hospitality chain with branches all over the world, no violence is permitted. No matter how much a professional killer might want to off a rival, they will not be allowed to if either of them is at the Continental. Breaking this rule leads to excommunication.

David Leitch is getting the band back together.
The filmmaker is reteaming with cinematographer Jonathan Sela and editor Elísabet Ronaldsdóttir on The Fall Guy, Universal’s action film based on the ’80s series starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Sela previously worked with Leitch on titles including Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw and John Wick (which Leitch directed alongside Chad Stahelski). Ronaldsdóttir’s credits also include Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde and John Wick — and she was one of the editors of Deadpool 2. She has also worked in the MCU, as one of the editors of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The series Fall Guy was created by Glen A. Larson and starred Lee Majors as a Hollywood stuntman who, to make ends meets, has a side hustle as a bounty hunter.

In Bullet Train, a half dozen assassins, the screw-up kid of a Russian crime lord and a lethally venomous snake are among the passengers on the titular mode of transport travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto. Balancing the sheer volume of characters and orchestrating the intricately choreographed tussles of action maestro David Leitch (John Wick and Atomic Blonde) already present ample challenges for an editor. For Elísabet Ronaldsdóttir, the Icelandic cutter of both Wick and Blonde, the degree of difficulty was further embellished by an array of flashbacks, Thomas the Tank Engine metaphors, surprise cameos and Engelbert Humperdinck needle drops. “Bullet Train” is quite the wild ride.
The film focuses on a criminal, codenamed Lady Bug (Brad Pitt), who gets on a super-fast train in Japan and is soon confronted by a gaggle of trained killers. Why is everyone after the mysterious silver briefcase and what awaits them all when the train reaches its final destination are among the mysteries that unravel along the train’s high-speed track.
The question of who is orchestrating the very bloody mayhem is an easier one to answer. That would be director David Leitch, a former stunt performer and choreographer who has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after filmmakers, thanks to hits like “Deadpool 2,” “Hobbs & Shaw,” “Atomic Blonde” and now “Bullet Train.”
TheWrap chatted with Leitch about how he got involved with the project, leaning into the comedic tone, finding the right structure in editing and the unexpected train movie that inspired him.

“Bullet Train” producer and 87North co-founder Kelly McCormick’s guiding principle in filmmaking has been “finding the truth in fiction,” a response to earlier documentary work, where “it was not uncommon to twist stories to make them more entertaining.” So she pivoted to producing content that packs a different sort of emotional — and physical — punch.
McCormick’s latest film, “Bullet Train,” directed by her husband and 87North partner David Leitch, stars Brad Pitt as a hitman who finds himself on a snatch-and-grab job that grows more complicated by the minute. Pitt leads an ensemble cast, including Sandra Bullock, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry and Bad Bunny, in a wild ride that showcases the company’s signature blend of hyper-violence and heart.
“I look at action as melodrama,” McCormick explains. “It’s about how to punctuate the highs higher and the lows lower with physicality as much as with dialogue.

“Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” have been nominated as the best dramatic film editing of 2021 by the American Cinema Editors, which announced the nominees for the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards on Thursday.
Those five films will compete in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category, while the field in Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) will consist of “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
The most surprising omission was probably “West Side Story,” while Ace Eddie voters also bypassed “Nightmare Alley,” “Coda” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Nominations for the editing of animated features went to the same five animated films that have also been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Visual Effects Society and Art Directors Guild: “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.

It was a busy morning for precursor awards today, wasn’t it? Not only are we still recovering from what went on at the Golden Globes last night, a quartet of important stepping stones to Oscar announced their nominees. The nominations came from the Ace Eddies (the Guild for film editors), the American Society of Cinematographers (the Guild for cinematography), the Art Directors Guild, and of course, the Writers Guild. The latter, as usual, had disqualified some high profile contenders, so that’s important to keep in mind, but the former three have given us a decent look at the likeliest Academy Award nominees in Best Production Design and Best Film Editing, respectively. The four precursors represented Guilds that actually correspond with Academy members, so keep that in mind. Ace Eddie and Adg separate into multiple categories, so that’s worth making note of, as well. Also, as you might imagine,...
