No group had it locked like Public Enemy the year Mandela was finally let out of prison. In 1990, when their momentum-grabbing third album dropped, its songs and the band’s logo — a defiant, beret-adorned B-boy in the crosshairs of a gun — were as ubiquitous as the African medallions worn by Black folks in virtually every North American city. If 1988’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is Public Enemy’s brilliant bedrock, Fear of a Black Planet represents their all-encompassing apex. This Black History Month is...

Donovan Woods has announced plans for his new album, Without People. The Canadian singer-songwriter’s follow-up to 2018’s Both Ways, the full-length project will be released November 6th.
Recorded remotely by Woods and backing musicians during quarantine, Without People shows Woods exploring various aspects of human connection. The first release, “Grew Apart,” is a looser, funkier number that depicts someone struggling to hide his real feelings about a breakup, while the more recent “Clean Slate” describes the sensation of falling in love and wishing the past could be wiped away.

A week after ASCAP gave out its pop awards, the performing rights organization rolled out another round of kudos with the ASCAP Screen Music Awards for composers, announced online Tuesday morning as the kickoff to a two-day online event taking place in lieu of the org’s usual black-tie dinner in Beverly Hills as a result of ongoing quarantining.
Hans Zimmer won the trophy for top box office film for scoring the blockbuster remake of “The Lion King.” In television, the award for most performed themes and underscore went to David Vanacore, whose most-heard work of the year included “Survivor” and “Deal or No Deal.” Siddhartha Khosla, of “This Is Us” fame, won for top network television series.
Although those awards represent acclaim represented in sheer commercial numbers, ASCAP also polls its composer and songwriter members to give out three peer-voted awards. In the Composer’s Choice categories, John Powell...

Twelve years after Barenaked Ladies wrote the theme song for “The Big Bang Theory,” the band returned to the megahit series to compose an acoustic version for the final episode.
Vocalist/guitarist Ed Robertson penned the new take on the iconic theme song after executive producers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady reached out to the Canadian band ahead of the historic series finale. The acoustic rendition is now available on streaming services, in addition to an instrumental version that debuted on the post-finale special, “Unraveling The Mystery: A Big Bang Farewell.”
“I was really honored that they asked me to participate in the finale,” said Robertson. “It was a really fun and collaborative day in the studio, getting notes back and forth from Chuck while coming up with this new version. It really reminded me of composing and recording the song in the beginning – fun, spontaneous and with a spirit of playfulness.

The Big Bang Theory ended with a sweet scene over, what else, Chinese food. The last scene of the series featured Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), Howard (Simon Helberg), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) all assembled over takeout, talking and laughing, like they always did. As they shared laughs and food, an acoustic version of the theme song, "History of Everything," played. See it below. Series co-creator Chuck Lorre had the song on his mind for 12 years. "Twelve years ago, [Barenaked Ladies lead singer] Ed Robertson sent a demo of that theme song — just him and an acoustic guitar. I thought it was great and I said,...

After 10 seasons on The Big Bang Theory, yes, Kaley Cuoco knows the words to the theme song. The actress proved as much by performing the tune for Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show audience on Wednesday.
Cuoco, 31, was put on the spot when an audience member asked if she knew the lyrics, and Fallon urged her to perform them. “I can try,” she said, proceeding to tackle the dense tune with zest.

Fun fact -- The Barenaked Ladies wrote the theme song for "The Big Bang Theory". Not so fun fact -- a former member of Tbl says he hasn't received a dime for the work ... even though its TV's #1 comedy. According to legal docs, former front man Steven Page claims he was promised 20% of all proceeds from the song. He says band member Ed Robertson is the only one collecting and has kept all the money for himself.

The Barenaked Ladies have released the new music video for their song "Boomerang" and HuffPost has the exclusive first look.
"Boomerang," the first single off the band's twelfth proper album "Grinning Streak," is just your average, everyday animated tale of an anthropomorphic boomerang who's thrown in the air by a redheaded girl, accidentally hits her in the face on its return flight and is banished because of it. Then, after the boomerang stalks the girl for awhile and finds out she's sad it goes to a magical tanning salon and suddenly gets transformed into a human Prince Charming-type who happily meets up again with the now-adult-girl as she's playing beach volleyball.
Happens to all of us.
The Ladies went to the public to get "Boomerang" made, conducting a crowdsourcing contest on Genero.tv where the winning video treatment would score $5,000. London, U.K. animation team Izzy B and Jacob Larys...

Oh Canada, you shouldn't have!
The Feb. 4 episode of "How I Met Your Mother" will feature a whole host of Canadian guest stars -- Alan Thicke, Alex Trebek and k.d. lang are only a few. Honestly, it's almost like the whole population of Canada is turning out to honor Robin Sparkles! And we have the video to prove it.
Most of the time, when networks have a casting announcement to make, they just send out a press release or tell some reporter the name. Not this time. Instead, CBS has created a video -- set to the Canadian national anthem, of course -- to tell us about the rather impressive list of Canadian talent coming to "How I Met Your Mother" in February.
Why are they coming? CBS hasn't given that away yet, but the answer definitely has something to do with the return of Robin Sparkles, the alter-ego...

Aww, what a cute way to celebrate The Big Bang Theory’s first Emmy nomination for best comedy. But that’s not why the Barenaked Ladies took a trip to the show’s Warner Bros. TV lot to shoot a full length version of the theme song. The video was actually made to help kick off the sitcom’s launch in syndication this fall (it will air five nights a week on TBS and stations across the country beginning Sept. 18).
