Richard M. Sherman, two-time Oscar winner who collaborated with brother Robert B. Sherman on the songs for “Mary Poppins,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and the enduring Disneyland tune “It’s a Small World (After All),” died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills due to age-related illness. He was 95.
The Sherman brothers worked in a job that no longer exists: inhouse songwriters for a studio. In their case, the studio was Disney, and the brothers were hired for that steady gig after their 1958 song “Tall Paul” was a hit for Mouseketeer Annette Funicello.
In the early 1960s, they penned tunes for Hayley Mills in Disney films “The Parent Trap,” “In Search of the Castaways” and “Summer Magic,” as well as songs for “The Absent-Minded Professor” and “Moon Pilot”; Walt Disney, always aware of synergy, made sure his family comedies had a tune with radio-play potential. With the 96th Academy Awards in the history books, it’s time to become obsessed over the 77th Tony Awards. Nominations are April 30th with the awards set to air on CBS on June 16 from Lincoln Center. Among the contenders for Tony nominations are many musicals based on movies including “Back to the Future,’ “The Notebook,” “Water for Elephants” and “The Outsiders”: high profile revivals such as Ibsen’s “An Enemy of the People” with Jeremy Strong; “Cabaret” with Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne and the Who’s “Tommy”; imports from London and transfers from off-Broadway.
Do you remember the Tony landscape 50 years ago? The 28th annual honors took place April 21, 1974, at the Shubert Theater and aired on ABC. And to say it was a star-studded affair is something of an understatement. Kj Steinberg serves as writer and executive producer on the series. Qualley will executive produce in addition to starring. Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Ann Johnson, and Graham Littlefield of The Littlefield Company will also executive produce along with Monica Lewinsky as well as Knox and Chris Robinson via Knox Robinson Productions. 20th Television is the studio.

The Coen brothers broke up four years ago, and it has taken them a while to come out with solo albums that define their identities. In 2021, Joel Coen directed “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was a dazzling black-and-white pastiche of a Shakespeare drama. It was well-done but felt like a one-off, a decision by Coen to serve the material. One year later, Ethan Coen came out with “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” a small-scale rock ‘n’ roll documentary that he made during the pandemic; it was a YouTube clip job, and on those terms expertly crafted — but even after Jerry Lee died (five months after the film’s Cannes premiere), it took ages for the film to be released.
Now, though, we finally have a Coen movie in which one of the brothers puts his solo stamp on filmmaking. “Drive-Away Dolls,” directed by Ethan Coen, is a crime-speckled road-trip...

Buckle up and get ready to hit the road with two young women who’ve stumbled upon a mysterious briefcase full of trouble! A new Drive-Away Dolls trailer is barreling down the information highway today, with plenty of kooky characters hitchhiking aboard the new comedy co-written by husband and wife duo Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke.
The Ethan Coen-directed comedy revolves around Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her timid friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.
Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon join Qualley and Viswanathan for Coen and Cooke’s unique crime caper, with Focus Features handling domestic distribution.

When she was growing up, Margaret Qualley — the actress known best for Maid and, most recently, Poor Things — was the type of kid who would break into little dances to entertain her family during TV commercial breaks. Now that she’s grown up, she still does it — just with a more selective audience. “I wouldn’t do it in front of everybody, but with [my husband]? Sure,” she tells Rolling Stone, laughing. “I’m like, ‘What do you think of this?’ — like a precocious child.”

There’s a scene in the Paul Reubens-starrer Pee-wee’s Big Adventure that finds its titular character setting off on a vagabond adventure. He hops aboard a train to sit side-by-side with a grizzled, toothless man known as Hobo Jack, and they sing camp songs until Pee-Wee suddenly sours on the moment. The disgust radiates from his face and he makes a rash decision to jump off the moving train and tumble into the dirt below. The scene lasts all of 53 seconds.

Margaret Qualley has secured an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actress in a limited anthology series or movie. The nominations, which were announced on July 12, included Qualley for her starring role in Netflix's 2021 drama "Maid," which she appeared in alongside her mom, Andie MacDowell. Her performance as Alex, a young mother trying to escape an abusive relationship, scored her the nod and made an impact on the actor herself. "I think that a lot of people either saw a part of themselves in Alex's experience or somebody that they know - their mom, their sister," Qualley told Deadline in January. "The emotional abuse and domestic violence and the massive systemic flaws in the United States, and the way that poverty is overlooked, all of these things are unfortunately incredibly prominent and prevalent, and I think that's why."
The role presented an alluring challenge for Qualley. "It's painful but propelling.

It’s a funny world we live in when a single bit of possible casting news can turn Film Twitter on its head. Overnight, the fans of 2019’s Joker and those more skeptical toward Todd Phillips making a sequel titled Joker: Folie à Deux switched places when it was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that Lady Gaga is in talks to play Dr. Harleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn… and that the movie is going to be a musical.
Suddenly those of us who were ambivalent toward the prospect of more Scorsese allusions in murderous clown makeup sat up and took notice while those eager for more of the same were left befuddled. A musical?! Sure! Why not?! Recall that in the climax of the first Joker, Joaquin Phoenix’s titular character is literally dancing to music, if only in his own head, while winding himself up to shoot Robert De Niro on live television.

Margaret Qualley spent her youth training to be a ballerina before transitioning to acting in her mid-teens. That training likely aided her in her Emmy-nominated turn as the actress and dancer Ann Reinking in FX’s “Fosse/Verdon.” But it was her careful, layered performance as a single mother in Netflix’s critically acclaimed limited series “Maid” that earned the 27-year-old actress her first individual Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.
Based on the best-selling memoir “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive” by Stephanie Land, “Maid” follows Qualley’s Alex, who turns to cleaning houses to make ends meet after escaping an emotionally abusive relationship with her child’s father. The 10-episode drama chronicles the all too fleeting highs and devastating lows of Alex’s attempts to build a life for herself and find a safe place to raise her daughter, all while trying to look out for her own mom,...

After earning her first solo SAG Award nomination this morning for her turn in Netflix’s Maid, Margaret Qualley spoke with Deadline about her experience with the series, as well as upcoming roles in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Victorian drama Poor Things, Claire Denis’ The Stars at Noon and Zachary Wigon’s thriller Sanctuary, and the status of the film Fred & Ginger from director Jonathan Entwistle, in which she’s set to play Ginger Rogers opposite Jamie Bell’s Fred Astaire.
While Spider-Man‘s Tom Holland recently announced that he will topline his own Astaire biopic for Sony, Qualley is unaware at this point of when Fred & Ginger might get made. “I don’t know, but I hope it happens soon,” she says. “I love Jamie Bell so much and I’m always trying to be typecast as a dancer, so I can just dance in everything I do.

At just 27 years old, Margaret Qualley has racked up notable performances in numerous films and television shows bound to be cherished for a lifetime. From “The Leftovers” and “Fosse/Verdon” to “Once Upon a Time in America” and “The Nice Guys,” she’s already collaborated with Oscar and Emmy winners, and now she’s in Panama, working on the latest film from Claire Denis.
But even with Qualley’s early accomplishments, she admits to feeling like she doesn’t fit into the mold of other performers. The actress said she hasn’t had much exposure to awards season, but what she has experienced so far has been just plain fun. Qualley jokes it’s something she should probably talk about in therapy, but she has a tendency to lower her expectations so she’ll never be disappointed — even when she ended up Emmy-nominated for her role as Ann Reinking in the FX limited series “Fosse/Verdon.

The limited series “Maid” debuted on Netflix on October 1. The 10-hour drama stars Margaret Qualley as Alex, a mother stuck in the title profession after she leaves her abusive husband. So it’s not exactly an escapist binge, but is it worthy of a watch? It’s adapted from Stephanie Land’s memoir of the same name, and so far the “Maid” reviews are stellar.
As of this writing the series has a MetaCritic score of 84 based on nine reviews counted, all of which are positive, with none classified negative or even mixed. So it’s not surprising that on Rotten Tomatoes, which categorizes reviews simply as positive or negative, the film has a perfect 100% score thus far, also based on nine positive reviews.

Chicago will return to Broadway just in time for its 25th anniversary: The musical is set to reopen at the Ambassador Theatre on Tuesday, September 14.
The Kander-Ebb-Fosse musical becomes the third Broadway production to set its reopening since New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that theaters could reopen in September at 100% capacity. Producers Barry & Fran Weissler announced today that tickets are now on sale for the Tony Award-winning Chicago.
As with The Phantom of the Opera and Six – the two musicals that announced their Fall returns earlier this week – the reopening of Chicago is subject to the approval of the NY State Department of Health and the Governor.
In their announcement today, the Weisslers noted, “The approval of the Department of Health and the Governor will be based on the continuing growth of the fully vaccinated population, coupled with an ongoing decline in total Covid 19 cases and positivity rates.

Even though Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be shortened to just one pre-taped hour on TNT and TBS, the special In Memoriam segment will still be a highlight. Since the 2020 event aired on January 19, it will be over 14 months until the one on April 4. That means even more actors, actresses and members of SAG/AFTRA will hopefully be honored than the 40 people in the tribute last year.
Chadwick Boseman died last August and is a four-time nominee for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday. The two individual nominations are for his leading role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and his supporting performance in “Da 5 Bloods.” Those two films also are nominated for the top ensemble category.

The late Ann Reinking is being honored with a scholarship in her name.
The $5,000 grant from Off the Lane will be awarded annually to a young dancer moving to New York City to help them in their artistic endeavors. Reinking herself moved from Seattle to New York City to pursue dancing.
Reinking died in December at age 71. She got her acting start in a Seattle Opera House production of “Bye Bye Birdie” in 1965. She is best known for playing Roxie Hart in 1977’s “Chicago,” replacing Gwen Verdon. She reprised the part for musical’s 1996 revival.
“I believe Annie would have loved having her name on the Ann Reinking Scholarship Program,” Reinking’s husband Peter Talbert said in a statement. “Like so many young dancers coming to New York, she struggled to find a foothold in a strange city. Short of money and friends, Annie persevered and found her way forward,...

Tomorrow is New Years Eve which means this cursed year is nearly up --happy 'Light at End of Tunnel Day' to you! Obviously our "year in review" festivities will continue a bit still. Plus the 2020 film year is extra long (in a way) due to the Awards Show Shenanigans of extending Oscar & Globe & so on eligibility by two months. So we won't be done with 2020 until April but at least the calendar year is concluding and the 2021 film year can also begin with Sundance in January!

Looking back over the beloved stars we lost in the past year is always emotional, and this year has been especially devastating, given how many members of the entertainment community died due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The pandemic hit the music community especially hard, but television and film performers, as well as stage actors and below-the-line workers were also affected. Singer-songwriter John Prine, record producer Hal Willner and “Nashville” actor Allen Garfield all died of coronavirus on April 7. Broadway actor Nick Cordero died on July 5 after a four-month battle with the disease.
Adam Schlesinger, a composer and co-founder of Fountains of Wayne, died on April 1 at 52. Charley Pride, remembered as country music’s first Black superstar, died on Dec. 12 of coronavirus complications.

“Love Me Like You Hate Me” depicts the ups and downs of a tempestuous love affair in sexually explicit detail, with both actors fully nude and simulating(?) sex acts.
