Mumbai, July 7 (Ians) Before embarking on their trip to Spain for a four-nation international tournament, the Indian men’s hockey team had a few sessions with newly-appointed mental conditioning expert Paddy Upton and both chief coach Craig Fulton and captain Harmanpreet Singh described it as a “discovery phase” for both parties.
Harman said that besides getting to know the players and Indian hockey, Upton has started looking into one aspect of the mind process that players have to tackle regularly — the change in attitude the players feel while playing a lower-ranked team as against one ranked higher.
“Usually when we play a team that is ranked higher than us, is a tough opponent, we are pepped up, know what it has to do and each player knows his responsibilities. But when playing against a lower-ranked team or weak team, the mind starts taking things easily. Paddy gave some examples of how to tackle that,...

Rourkela, Jan 28 (Ians) India had entered the Fih Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup with high hopes but ended their campaign in the joint-9th position along with Argentina after beating South Africa 5-2 in a classification match at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, here on Saturday.
Before India defeated South Africa, Argentina thrashed Wales 6-0 in their classification match and thus secured the 9th place with India. Malaysia and France too won their matches and thus shared the 13th position while Japan and Chile finished 15th.
All eyes in Rourkela were on India’s clash with South Africa and the hosts seemed to feed off the energy of the jam-packed crowd in the Birsa Munda Stadium. And though Graham Reid’s team won the match 5-2, they were not convincing and should have won the match by a bigger margin.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 22 (Ians) Graham Reid, chief coach of the Indian men’s hockey team, on Sunday picked poor penalty corner conversion, failed to capitalise on circle penetrations, allowing easy turnovers and failure to make the most of their opportunities as the reasons for his team allowing New Zealand to make a comeback and hold them 3-3 and overcome the hosts in sudden death shoot-out in the Fih Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Crossover match, here.
India led 2-0 towards the end of the first half and then 3-1 in the third quarter but made basic errors and allowed the Black Sticks to fight back and level scores 3-3 and take the matter into a shoot-out. The Indians earned 11 penalty corners but could score off only two. They had 18 circle entries but could manage only 12 shots at the goal.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 22 (Ians) India messed up a plethora of chances and a 3-1 lead midway through the third quarter to allow New Zealand to come back and hold them 3-3 in regulation time and then fluffed a few more chances in the shoot-out to lose 4-5 in sudden death in their Crossover stage match and crashed out of the Fih Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup, here on Sunday.
It was a story of errors and missed chances as India held a 2-0 lead just before half-time but allowed New Zealand to score a late goal to make it 2-1 at the breather. On resumption, the Indians extended the lead to 3-1 but poor marking in the circle and basic error while defending allowed New Zealand to score two quick goals and hold Graham Reid’s side 3-3 at the end of 60 minutes of play.

Having rested the youngster for the match against Wales, and subsequent assessment, Hardik has now been ruled out of the World Cup, Hockey India confirmed on Saturday.
Hockey India also informed that Hardik will be replaced by alternate player Raj Kumar Pal.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 19 (Ians) India coach Graham Reid said poor execution in the attack by his players was the reason for their failure to pull off a big win against Wales in the Fih Odisha Hockey Men’s Hockey World Cup here on Thursday, because of which they lost out on a direct berth in quarterfinals.
India needed to beat Wales by a margin of eight goals but struggled to a 4-2 win and thus finished second behind England in Pool D and will now have to go through the Crossover stage, where they will meet New Zealand.
Reid was not surprised by his forwards failing to take an early lead against Wales, who packed their defence. “If you see the England-Wales game, they did not score till the second quarter. It’s quite common against a team that plays like they do to have the first quarter bumping head against...

Bhubaneswar, Jan 19 (Ians) Needing to win by a margin of eight goals to top the group, India huffed and puffed to a narrow 4-2 victory against Wales, finishing second in Pool D and failing to bag a direct spot in the quarterfinals of the Fih Odisha Hockey Men’s Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium, here on Thursday.
Pool D rivals England, who had a better goal difference, a few hours back thrashed Spain 4-0, thus setting Graham Reid’s team an uphill task of winning by an eight-goal margin or scoring seven goals — six off them field goals, to tie them on seven points and top the standings and secure a direct berth to the quarterfinals.

Mumbai, Jan 12 (Ians) Between them they have the experience of playing five Hockey World Cups and thus former India captain Mm Somaya, Edgar Mascarenhas and Adrian D’Souza believes the upcoming edition of the mega event starting in Rourkela on Friday is a huge opportunity for India to end the four-decade medal drought in the mega event.
Somaya has played in two World Cups, Mascarenhas in the 1990 event in Pakistan and D’Souza in the 2006 and 2010 editions. But all three believe that with India playing at home and considering the amount of time the players have spent together as a team, the 16-team event being held at Rourkela and Bhubaneswar is a great opportunity for them.

Bengaluru, Dec 26 (Ians) Playing the home team in a crucial match of the World Cup is a very difficult proposition and the current chief coach of the Indian men’s hockey team had to face this daunting task as a member of Australia men’s team that won the bronze medal in the 1990 edition in Lahore, Pakistan.
Australia played hosts Pakistan in the semifinal and lost 1-2 as the hosts reached the final in which they lost to the Netherlands 3-1 at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore.

As the clock ticks down for the mega event, which will play out from January 13-29 at Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, Indian fans are looking forward to it in much anticipation.
Their appetite whetted by the men’s team winning the bronze in Tokyo in 2021, ending a four-decade-long wait for an Olympic medal, hockey aficionados are hoping the Indian team will end another embarrassing drought — at 47 years, a lengthier wait for a medal than that at the Olympics — at the men’s World Cup.
It was in 1975 that India won their first and till now only hockey World Cup title at Kuala Lumpur, beating Pakistan 2-1 in the final. Since that fateful third edition of the quadrennial mega event, India have failed to even reach the semifinals.

Hockey India was, just like the All India Football Federation (Aiff), facing the threat of suspension from Fih for alleged third-party intervention in the governance of the sport in the country.
While the Aiff has been suspended by FIFA, putting the U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled to be held in India in October in a limbo, Hockey India survived the threat as the Fih delegation accepted the principal changes in the draft Constitution, gave the Committee of Administrators (CoA) 10 days to submit the approved Constitution, and set a deadline of October 28 to complete the election process.
Even while the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teas were fighting for medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham few days back, many Indian fans were worried over the future of the teams, considering the governance mess in the sport in the country.

New Delhi, Aug 12 (Ians) Young India men’s hockey team forward Abhishek has conceded that the 0-7 thrashing at the hands of Australia in the final at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games was a lesson that the side had to “improve upon in training”.
India’s hopes of clinching their maiden Cwg hockey gold remained a dream as they were soundly thrashed in the quadrennial showpiece, even as Australia went on to clinch a record-extending seventh Cwg gold.
“Even though the final against Australia did not go our way, we learned a lot from the match and have to improve upon in training,” opined Abhishek on Friday.
The forward, who is set to turn 23 on August 15, started in all six games at the Commonwealth Games and remained an ever-present threat inside the opposition’s defence as India settled for silver. He believes the tournament was a big learning experience for him.

The deal was negotiated by Brandon Hill, Manager of Acquisitions, on behalf of Cinedigm and Priscilla Smith at Foxglove Entertainment on behalf of Magic Monkey Films. Foxglove is the sister company of genre sales agency The Coven.

New Delhi, March 12 (Ians) Indian men's hockey team's national camp ahead of their Fih Pro League tie against Argentina will start on Saturday at the Sports Authority of India (Sai)'s southern centre near Bengaluru, Hockey India said on Friday.
A 33-member core probables group has been called up for the 18-day camp which ends on March 31 after which the team departs to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where the two-match tie will be played on April 10 and 11.
"The team was given a brief three-day break to go meet their families before they return to the national camp on Saturday. I think this break was needed to refresh mentally as the upcoming weeks are going to be quite intense as we prepare for the Fih Hockey Pro League matches against Argentina," said chief coach Graham Reid.
"We are looking forward to resuming our campaign in the Fih Hockey Pro League. Getting good...

New Delhi, March 9 (Ians) The Indian men's hockey team needs to work on its defence, said coach Graham Reid. Reid said that the biggest learning he took from their recently concluded tour of Europe was that the team allows the opposition to come back into the game in the middle periods of matches too often.
"We will go over the data from this tour once we return to Sai, Bengaluru but the first things that requires attention is making sure we tighten our defence. We allow them (opponents) to come back in the middle (of the game) a bit too much. The last match was a little bit better. We are starting to make some ground on that," said Reid in a release from Hockey India.
