Before Good Hair, my only exposure to weaves was when a girl fight ended in hair ripped from a belligerent head and with me standing nearby wondering what just happened. Admittedly ignorant on the subject, I was surprisingly engaged by this documentary’s informative interviews and good-natured charm that entertains regardless of gender or race.
Director Jeff Stilson takes a subject as simple as hair and expands it into a frequently funny discussion about culture, fashion, and obsession while following comedian Chris Rock’s comical quest for knowledge.
Rock has directed a couple narrative films starring himself, but this time he executive produces, hosts, and narrates a comprehensive examination of African-American style; from the roots of attraction to the frayed edges of competitive cutting. Curious after his 5-year-old’s questions about “good hair,” he travels the country to salons, barbershops, and conventions educating himself about women’s hair while a »

Spin-offs and sequels represent Disney’s plan of expansion in between the major theatrical features. A small fraction of Disney’s films actually have theatrical potential while the rest have little promise beyond DVD and Blu-ray sales for adolescent to tweenage audiences by capitalizing on classic Disney film protagonists or their buddies. Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure takes Peter Pan out of the Neverland equation and establishes a story with no appeal beyond the 5 to 10-year-old demographic. It’s not a negligible niche and so Disney puts a fair amount of money into the process. The direct to DVD/Blu-ray films like this one tend to have a decent cast selection as well as respectable animation production levels; they just don’t have very compelling stories or characters.
As the movie’s intro explains, faeries depend on a seasonal cycle of sorts the basis of which is their faerie dust. »

Comedian interviews black celebrities to get behind the obsession with hair.
Chris Rock and Nia Long

Chris Rock is never one to shy away from pushing the boundaries of racial discussion in America. His HBO stand-up specials "Bring the Pain" and "Bigger and Blacker" are a testament to that. In his new documentary, "Good Hair," Rock continues to do so, all the while trying to answer his daughter's question: "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?"
"One day, I was in the car with my daughter and her little girlfriend, who happened to be white, and she was raving about her girlfriend's hair, and she used the words 'good hair' to describe it, and it kind of made me jump a little bit," Rock said.
The film deals with African-American women's obsession with their hair, which ultimately sheds a light on their own images of beauty. »

Andrea Wong brought us The Bachelor! Now she's trying to reinvigorate Lifetime with positivity and fun.
If Project Runway had a needlepoint challenge, the show might find itself with an unlikely contestant. "About a year ago, I started needlepointing," confesses Andrea Wong, CEO of Lifetime Networks. She is perched on a chair in her Los Angeles office, wearing a black Yves Saint Laurent pantsuit. "It completely relaxes me." Well, usually. There was that time she was stitching a cushion for her boyfriend. "I was needlepointing while doing conference calls. It practically killed me."
Wong's coexisting affection for high fashion and homey crafts are the perfect metaphor for her plan to reinvigorate the dowdy, if successful, cable channel. Lifetime has been the top ad-backed female-focused network for years but, before Wong's 2007 arrival, was plagued with a reputation for lowbrow movies like My Stepson, My Lover. Its ratings were falling or flat for five straight years. »

To modernize the story into a graphic novel format seemed a bit tricky on the surface, but after reading through the »

If your little girl is a fan of the Disney Fairies, check out these new 5″ Flutter Wing Disney Fairies dolls ($9.50-$13) available at Disney Stores and DisneyStore.com.
Choose from Tinker Bell, Rosetta, Silvermist, Fawn and Iridessa, all of whom are fully posable and come with a flower-shaped stand that Anya thinks is an umbrella.
Unfortunately, the feature that they’re named for — “Flutter Wing” — is their weakest. When you press a button on their backs, their wings “flutter” but just ever so slightly. They’re still really cute and a new favorite of my Fairy-obsessed child.
Anya says her favorite is Iridessa (voiced by Raven-Symoné) but it used to be Silvermist (voiced by Lucy Liu). Personally, I was hoping for a Vidia doll who is kind of my favorite because she’s mean without being evil, a rare thing in Disney movies.

Back when Good Hair was first announced, I was elated to see that fellow-Aquarian Chris Rock was making a documentary that attempted to do for black women's hair what Bill Maher did for religion. No more elusive secrets! Put it on the table in daylight and softly poke it with questions for all to see. So awesome. I mean, as the years go by and I casually encounter and work with fewer black people (that's life!), as a white guy I am stricken with the fear that I might never know what is up. I have so many inquiries lingering unanswered and unfortunately Transformers 2 did nothing to curb my desire for first-hand knowledge. And when I type "first-hand," I mean Salt and Pepa discussing "burn" stories. Bonus Prize: Raven from That's So Raven offering an enligtening weave-shift.
