Last week, comedy's heavyweights donned their finest embarrassing dad sweaters, broke out the bubbly—and the clip reel—and paid tribute to Bill Cosby, who was on the receiving end of the exceedingly prestigious 12th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. On hand to present the longtime-coming award (the family-friendly Cos had twice turned down the honor in objection to the 1998 profanity-laced inaugural ceremony honoring Richard Pryor) were Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, former Cosby Show costars Phylicia Rashad and Malcolm-Jamal Warner and fellow comedian and longtime pal Dick Gregory. Bill Cosby gets Twain Prize for humor: What's your fave Cosby moment?

27 October 2009 8:59 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Bill Cosby accepted the vaunted Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at Lincoln Center last night, complete with two hours of highlights from the 72-year-old's career: his standup on The Jack Paar Show, his breakthrough role on I Spy, and of course, The Cosby Show, among others. In accepting honor, and joining the likes of previous winners Richard Pryor and George Carlin, it marked a relaxing of Cosby's own strict standards: He'd turned down the honor twice before because of objections to the profanity-laced ceremony, the prize's first, for Pryor in 1998. ("Too much foul mouth," he said. "Too much N-word. »

Bill Cosby awarded Mark Twain Prize

27 October 2009 7:03 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

One of America's greatest TV icons has been officially recognized as one of its greatest humorists. Yes, he's still one of the greatest TV icons, but giving him another honor for his work in TV is like giving Jay Leno a free car.

Bill Cosby received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Monday at the Kennedy Center.

The event, set for broadcast on PBS on Nov. 4., featured presentations and words from comedy notables such as Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld. It also featured a Cosby Show reunion of sorts with Phylicia Rashad and Malcolm-Jamal Warner. It's a good thing Dr. Huxtable didn't take his boy out of the world after all.

Cj Meets Oprah and Doubts Her

"You worked as hard as us, you'd all be President," says Violet Weston over the dinner table, her fracturing family gathered in the hours after settling patriarch Beverly Weston in the Pawhuska, Oklahoma earth. Violet Weston, brought to us in her third incarnation from the beautiful mind of Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad, simmers within a pill-induced haze throughout her turn on her mother's throne, like a mile of highway through the back country in summer. Self-drugged and slurring, it would be easy to lay the manias and madnesses of the Weston family at Violet's often stumbling, sometimes dancing, feet. But the question that stands -- at least in my mind -- shoulder to shoulder in Tracy Letts' towering play August: Osage County alongside the role of parents in shaping the destinies of their children, is the... »
