Is "The Wire" still one of the greatest TV shows of all time? David Simon's sprawling, complex portrait of Baltimore has appeared on multiple "best of" lists over the years, popping up near the top of masterpiece-filled rankings from outlets like Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Empire, and more. The HBO series, which really couldn't have worked before that channel's dominance in early 2000s, currently ranks sixth-highest of all time on IMDb, and despite never winning an Emmy, it's earned a Peabody, DGA and WGA awards, and a spot on the American Film Institute's Television Programs of The Year list three different times.

The Black Phone, the horror film based on the short story by Joe Hill, was a huge hit when it was released in 2022. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw, followed the terrifying ordeal of a 13-year-old boy who was kidnapped by a serial killer and trapped in a soundproof basement. There, he received calls from a disconnected phone that connected him to the killer’s previous victims, who helped him plan his escape.
Now, fans of the film can look forward to a sequel that will continue the story of Finney Blake and his sister Gwen, who have psychic abilities. The Black Phone 2 is set to be released on June 27, 2025, and will be available for streaming on Netflix India.

Soon after director Scott Derrickson’s Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone (check out our review Here) was released last year, it was revealed that Derrickson and Hill were discussing the possibility of a sequel… Now Variety reports that Universal and Blumhouse have announced that The Black Phone 2 will be released on June 27, 2025 – and the intention is that this sequel will be the “launch of a sinister new franchise.”
The release date is the only information that has been shared about The Black Phone 2, but a social media post from Derrickson indicates that he is still involved with the project in some capacity. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s going to be directing the sequel, scripting it for another director, or producing it alongside Blumhouse. Speaking of sinister franchises, when a sequel to Derrickson’s film Sinister was made, he wrote the script for Sinister 2...

The “Black Phone” is ringing again.
Universal and Blumhouse have announced a sequel to the 2022 horror film, “The Black Phone,” set for June 27, 2025. The companies say “The Black Phone 2” is the “launch of a sinister new franchise.”
The original movie starred Ethan Hawke, as a child abductor and murderer called the Grabber, and Mason Thames, a 13-year-old boy named Finney who crosses the killer’s path. The Grabber locks Finney in a soundproof basement, where nobody can hear him or come to his rescue. The only item is the basement is a disconnected telephone that begins ringing. When Finney answers it, he realizes he’s able to communicate with the spirits of the Grabber’s deceased victims. The kids’ ghosts teach Finney how to survive and fight back, and he’s able to escape the Grabber’s clutches in the end.

V/H/S/85, the latest entry in the found footage horror anthology V/H/S/ franchise, will begin streaming on Shudder service (which previously had great success with V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99) tomorrow, October 6th. This one consists of segments that were directed by David Bruckner (Hellraiser 2022), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (the Wrong Turn reboot) – and during an interview with ComicBook.com, Derrickson revealed that his segment is set in the same universe as The Black Phone! It even includes references to some Black Phone characters…
Derrickson said, “Oh, there’s actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody’s picking it up. But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he’s behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. He says, ‘He has these dreams that are prophetic.’ And he says, ‘My sister had the same gift.

Scott Derrickson has hidden a nod to 'The Black Phone' in new horror 'V/H/S/85'.The filmmaker - who adapted Joe Hill's story and turned it into a horror blockbuster last year with Ethan Hawke playing the sinister Grabber - has revealed how his 'Dreamkill' segment in Shudder streaming platform's upcoming anthology acts as a prequel of sorts. He told ComicBoook.com: "Oh, there's actually a universe crossover in there, which I guess I made it too subtle because nobody's picking it up."But James Ransone tells Detective Wayne, when he's behind the glass, he was talking about Gunther. He says, 'He has these dreams that are prophetic.' And he says, 'My sister had the same gift. They drove her crazy, she killed herself.'"And he said, 'Gunther's cousin Gwen has the same thing too. I f****** hate it.' Well, the sister is Gwen's mom,...

I’m loving this new tradition of a new V/H/S entry every fall. After a quiet period following V/H/S Viral in 2014, the series re-emerged with V/H/S/94 two years ago and has consistently delivered fun entries. The latest, V/H/S/85 is no exception. It once again brings together a group of talented filmmakers that offer a collection of fun and inventive stories.
No Wake: The first segment comes from Michael P. Nelson. “No Wake” is an interesting entry in that it is split over two different segments. It opens with a group of twenty-somethings on a camping trip. We join them in their Rv as they make their way to a secluded lake. When they get there, one of them finds several old, dilapidated wooden signs in the woods. They were likely properly posted at one point in time, but now lie forgotten on the forest floor. Some...

When Is Insidious 6 Coming? Well, the Insidious franchise has reached its fifth installment with Insidious: The Red Door, concluding the current storyline involving the Lambert family.
Although news about Insidious 6 may not be imminent, there are significant plans in motion for the future of the series.
Director James Wan experienced tremendous success with the release of Insidious in 2011, introducing audiences to the haunting experiences of the Lambert family, led by Josh and Renai, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, respectively.
The ongoing presence of spirits tormenting the family, particularly their son Dalton, played by Ty Simpkins, captivated viewers.
While the third and fourth films explored different narratives outside of the Lambert family, Insidious 5 returned to the familiar setting.
Throughout the entire franchise, two crucial elements have served as the connecting threads: the demonologist and paranormal investigator Elise Rainier, portrayed by Lin Shaye, and the eerie spiritual realm known as the Further.

Pennywise is breaking his 27-year curse and returning to Derry sooner than expected. Joining him are Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, and James Remar, who have all been added to the cast, Variety reported on April 5. Like many other details about the show, their specific roles are being kept under wraps.
HBO Max announced that an "It" prequel series titled "Welcome to Derry" was in the works on March 29, 2022, and officially gave it the green light on Feb. 23. The series, inspired by Stephen King's horror classic, will explore life in Derry leading up to Pennywise's tirade on the Losers Club before the razor-toothed killer clown's misdeeds led Georgie to his unfortunate fate in that rainy sewer drain.
However, there's a big caveat. On March 28, in an interview with Jake's Takes, Bill Skarsgård, who received critical acclaim for his role as Pennywise,...

The character The Grabber, played by Ethan Hawke in director Scott Derrickson’s adaptation of the Joe Hill story The Black Phone (watch it Here) is definitely not someone that anybody should emulate… but he did wear a very cool mask, which was designed by legendary special effects artist Tom Savini. So a lot of genre fans are probably going to want to buy the replica mask that is now being sold by Trick or Treat Studios. The mask is available for pre-order at This Link, and is going for the price of $59.99. Masks are expected to start shipping out on September 13th.
The Black Phone went over very well with us here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head; both of the reviews we have gave it a 9/10. You can read one at This Link and the other Here.

Spring is finally here, though you wouldn't know it from the snow flurries currently battering my house. Fortunately, there are plenty in the way of options to choose from, should you find yourself, like me, looking for something you can stream from the comfort of your home while you wait for the weather to get its act together. Or perhaps you don't really do the whole "leaving the house" thing very much, even when it is nice and sunny outside. Believe me, I get it, my fellow creatures of the dark.

Horror director Ti West came up through the world of micro-budget filmmaking. His early efforts were bankrolled by the likes of Larry Fessenden. He was also involved in the mumblecore movement thanks to a friendship with Joe Swanberg: They've even acted in each other's movies.
He has directed episodes of television shows as varied as "The Resident" and "Wayward Pines," and he has helmed short segments of modern classic anthology films such as "V/H/S" and "The ABCs of Death." In other words, West's directing sensibility is everywhere, never more so than in 2022, when he released two interconnected hits through A24, "X" and "Pearl."
His feature efforts reveal him to be a chameleon, the rare director who can work in many different horror registers. He makes straightforward slashers, slow-burn atmospheric chillers, films full of blood and guts, and movies where his characters are trapped in situations choked by unimaginable tension.

I’ve seen split opinions on director Scott Derrickson’s adaptation of the Joe Hill story The Black Phone (watch it Here), but I thought it was one of the better horror films of the year and both of the reviews we have here on the JoBlo Network gave it a 9/10. You can read one at This Link and the other Here. So it’s cool to see that Ethan Hawke decided to dress as his villainous character The Grabber for Halloween. I thought director Scott Derrickson’s Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone (get it Here) was a great movie. I would agree with the two reviews we have here on JoBlo.com, both of which gave the film a score of 9/10. (You can read one at This Link and the other Here.) I also thought it was a standalone movie. I never thought of it getting any kind of sequel. But The Black Phone was a financial success for Universal Pictures, and that means the studio wants more. Thankfully, it turns out that Hill already pitched an idea for The Black Phone 2 to Derrickson!
Speaking with ComicBook.com earlier this year, Derrickson said,
Joe Hill pitched me a wonderful idea for a sequel to Black Phone that, if this movie does well, I’m gonna do it. He’s got a great idea, I really liked it. Joe’s very protective and personal about his material,...

Ever since “The Conjuring” broke the box office in 2013, studios have been positioning new horror movies in the middle of summer to lure in audiences in for a good scare (or just looking to get out of the heat). That’s true of “The Black Phone,” the new Universal Pictures and Blumhouse release that finds Ethan Hawke playing a masked killer, from the mind of “Sinister” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” filmmaker Scott Derrickson.
But how and where is “The Black Phone” available to watch? Your answers below.

Making a horror film about a sadistic child killer could be a challenge in and of itself, but The Black Phone co-writer and director Scott Derrickson said there was one scene that was particularly difficult to execute.
In one upsetting moment, Terrence Blake (Jeremy Davies), the alcoholic father of missing child Finney (Mason Thames), whips his daughter, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).
“That one was probably the one that I felt the most nervous about,” Derrickson tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I chose the kitchen that I chose because it had a long counter. I realized you could really go too far with a scene like that very easily, and an audience can turn on a movie. I wanted them to be disturbed and upset by it, but I didn’t want them to turn on it.”
So, Derrickson chose to soften the moment in the film.

Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone deals with tough subject matter: A sadistic child killer named the Grabber, played by Ethan Hawke, abducts children, never to be seen again. When he takes his sixth victim, the young boy gets mysterious phone calls from a disconnected phone in the Grabber’s dungeon from the children that have come before.
The Universal and Blumhouse film, in theaters now, is based on a short story of the same name by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son. “It combined a serial killer story with a ghost story in a single location, which I had never seen before,” Derrickson tells The Hollywood Reporter, remembering the time he picked up the short story in a book store in Los Angeles.
The film also stars Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, James Ransone and Miguel Cazarez Mora, and was written...

In the new '70s-set horror movie "The Black Phone," a mysterious villain known only as "The Grabber" (Ethan Hawke) kidnaps children - specifically boys - and tortures them in his basement before ultimately killing them. He wears a series of terrifying masks, and his getaway car is a giant van purported to be for his magician act. At the scene of every kidnapping, the police find black balloons, which he keeps in the back of the car to subdue and hide his victims. The film's conclusion is just as terrifying as the events that lead up to it, so let's unpack how it all comes together - plus one big question you might still be asking after the credits roll.
When the Grabber kidnaps a local boy named Finney (Mason Thomas), things go quickly off the rails. The Grabber doesn't realize that the black phone in the basement chamber...

The Black Phone
Ah, the sweet nostalgic dreams of long-gone childhood. Carefree days, full of budding romance, bonds of friendship, and exploring adventures are lovingly recalled. Now, in horror flicks, well…it’s not that endearing. As a matter of fact, so many kids are menaced in terror tales, that it’s almost a “sub-genre”. The wee-ones have been menaced in everything from the classic The Curse Of The Cat People to (what they say is) the final season of the streaming sensation “Stranger Things”. Now, one of the “young Turks” of the movie “nail-biters” is ready to put those “brats” through the “ringer”. And his story source comes from an author with a familiar “fear history”. Somehow the biggest creeps come out of the earpiece of a common household device. Do you dare take a call from (creepy announcer voice followed by maniacal laughter) The Black Phone?

What serial killer worth his weight in dismembered corpses would be happy with a moniker as uncreative and flatly descriptive as “the Grabber?” That’s the name either a lazy detective or a reporter on deadline has bestowed upon the 1970s child-murdering villain Ethan Hawke plays in The Black Phone, a gloomy new Blumhouse thriller from director Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Doctor Strange). At least the killer looks creepy enough, issuing casual threats from behind a kabuki-like mask that magically changes expression to match his shifting moods. We’re guessing it...

Ethan Hawke reteams with Sinister director Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) for this ’70s-set serial killer thriller with a supernatural twist or two. Despite some flaws, it’s an enjoyable slice of retro-set horror.
The film opens in North Denver, 1978, where 13 year-old Finney (Mason Thames) is repeatedly bullied, despite having some proficiency on the baseball field. With no mother and an alcoholic, frequently abusive father (Jeremy Davies), Finn’s only support comes from his precocious younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), who’s prone to dropping colourful f-bombs.
However, their lives are upended when a local, mask-wearing serial killer known as The Grabber (Hawke) kidnaps Finn and locks him up in a basement. Gwen finds herself having strange dreams that might give a clue to her brother’s whereabouts,...

After a few years toiling away in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he directed and co-wrote 2016’s Doctor Strange before leaving the sequel, director Scott Derrickson is back where he belongs. The purveyor of two of the best horror films of the past 20 years—2005’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose and 2012’s Sinister—Derrickson is again in his genre element with The Black Phone.
He’s also put his preferred team back together too, as The Black Phone reunites Derrickson with Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill, as well as that picture’s star, Ethan Hawke. Also coming off the bench for this one is famed author Joe Hill, whose short story of the same name is the basis of this sharply focused, frightening, and ultimately moving thriller.

As Universal’s distribution head Jim Orr said in introducing Tuesday night’s CinemaCon screening of the studio’s upcoming late June release The Black Phone, studios don’t normally bring a movie like this to show in its entirety at a theater-owners convention two months ahead of opening unless they know they have the goods.
With this one reuniting producer Jason Blum and Blumhouse with director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill — all having worked together on 2010’s Sinister — Universal does have the goods, and then some. Being marketed apparently as a horror film, with a poster dominated by a fully terrifyingly masked and horned Ethan Hawke, what this late 1970s-set movie really is about is the trauma of youth crossing from childhood into teen years, more appropriately falling into the suspense thriller category than the kind of standard horror the marketing seems to indicate.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse has debuted a new trailer for Scott Derrickson’s horror thriller ‘The Black Phone.’
Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.
Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film stars Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, James Ransone and Ethan Hawke. It is adapted from the novella by Joe Hill.
Also in trailers – Teaser trailer dropped for ‘Dashcam’
The film hits cinemas on June 24th.

"You are special, Finney." Universal has debuted a second official trailer for a serial killer thriller titled The Black Phone, which first premiered at Fantastic Fest and Beyond Fest in the fall last year. This was set to open in February, but Universal delayed it until June this summer - which is a good sign. Starring four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke in the most terrifying role of his career and introducing Mason Thames in his first ever film role, The Black Phone is produced, directed, co-written by filmmaker Scott Derrickson, also the writer / director of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Marvel's Doctor Strange. After being abducted by a child killer and locked in a soundproof basement, a 13-year-old boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer's previous victims. The cast also includes Jeremy Davies, Madeleine McGraw, J. Gaven Wilde, James Ransone, and E. Roger Mitchell.

After the receiving rave reviews following its Fantastic Fest screening (including from our own Heather Wixson!), The Black Phone has been one of my most anticipated horror films and we have a look at the new trailer ahead of its theatrical release on June 24th. It's been recommended that you go into the film knowing as little as possible, but for those that just can't wait, take a look:
The phone is dead. And it’s ringing.
Director Scott Derrickson returns to his terror roots and partners again with the foremost brand in the genre, Blumhouse, with a new horror thriller.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Goodbye, Dragon Inn (Tsai Ming-liang)
Though far better known by its English title, the appropriately elegiac Goodbye, Dragon Inn, Tsai Ming-liang’s 2003 masterpiece bears a rather different name in Mandarin (rendered here via pinyin): Bú sàn, which roughly translates to “never leaving,” or—if one prefers the Sartre connotation—“no exit.” It forms the root of two distinctly contradictory Chinese idioms, which perfectly encapsulate the lamentation and beauty of Tsai’s film: Tiān xià méi yǒu bù sàn de yán xí, the infamous “all good things must come to an end,” and Bù jiàn bù sàn, which more or less means “even if we don’t see each other, don’t give up and leave,” or “I’m not leaving until I see you.
