Original editions of one of the most highly valued records in hip-hop will be available to the public again next month when the estate of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat releases 50 copies of Beat Bop, a collaboration between rappers Rammellzee and K-Rob, which features Basquiat’s artwork on the cover. Some original copies have sold for upward of $100,000. The copies available from the artist’s estate, however, will go for $4,000 each and be available via Phillips’ Dropshop starting next Thursday.

As tourists on Rodeo Drive crowded the storefront of the women’s Louis Vuitton store hoping for a glimpse of stars like Miranda Kerr and Billie Lourd who were brunching inside, private town cars — which likely tipped off said looky-loos — whisked media and influencers away to a private preview of the French design house’s just-opened Crafting Dreams exhibition.
Held at a private Bel-Air residence from now through May 3, the artful, immersive showcase takes place inside an architecturally stunning modern-contemporary three-story home, which features breathtaking views of the city as well as alfresco glimpses of Jennifer Aniston and The Weeknd’s backyards. (The latter tidbit was according to a champagne-sipping influencer; so take it with a grain of Louis Vuitton-branded salt since details about the home and its owner were unavailable.)
But most importantly — to fashion and interior design enthusiasts at least — the brand’s most exclusive and bespoke offerings...

The strikethrough is a typographical choice that commands attention; it demands that you notice it to the temporary dismissal of everything else around it. Jean-Michel Basquiat, the pioneering painting prodigy who rose to great acclaim before his untimely death in 1988 at age 27, used this device on his canvases intentionally. In fact, for a young, dreadlocked Haitian and Puerto Rican artist navigating the predominantly white fine art world of New York City in the late 1970s and 1980s, his very presence was a strikethrough — attracting eyes, intrigue, critique and passive observation. His outsiderness, ultimately, was outsized only by the ingenuity of his work.
Neo-expressionist painting (the movement Basquiat helped popularize) was direct and challenging in its commentary, elbowing the politeness of minimalist concepts that dominated the midcentury out of the way in exchange for high-energy canvases defined by their vividness and honest portrayal of reality. In that tradition, Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux,...

A plastic crown worn by the Notorious B.I.G. during the rapper’s “King of New York” photoshoot — originally purchased for $6 before the March 1997 photograph was taken — sold for $595,000 Tuesday night at Sotheby’s first-ever auction dedicated to hip-hop memorabilia.
The crown — sold by photographer Barron Claiborne, who shot the iconic Rap Pages cover just three days before Biggie’s March 9th, 1997 death — well exceeded its pre-auction estimate of $200,000 to $300,000. The item was autographed by both the rapper and the photographer and included three prints from the photoshoot.

One of the more amusing moments in Jim Jarmusch’s new zombie satire finds Iggy Pop lurching into a diner as one of two walking corpses moaning “coffeeeee,” making his way from human victims to the fresh brew on the counter. The other “Coffee Zombie,” as she’s credited, is Jarmusch’s longtime partner. But Sara Driver is a lot more than that.
As a director, Driver’s playful blend of shadowy fantasy and grimy New York living was a revelation in 1986’s “Sleepwalk,” a surreal and often haunting look at a woman adrift in supernatural circumstances. Jarmusch served as one of the cinematographers on the project, two years after Driver produced Jarmusch’s surprise breakout “Stranger Than Paradise.” However, while he continued honing his trademark deadpan filmmaking across the decades, Driver’s own directing career advanced in fits and starts.

A writer who first encountered the artist during the dawn of rap remembers him and his influence on the scene.
Rammellzee was remembered Wednesday with affection and admiration as a man whose originality and idiosyncratic vision was a hallmark of early-'80s hip-hop. He died Tuesday at age 50 from causes unknown at the time of writing.
"Beat Bop," the 10-minute single he cut with K-Rob in 1983, was tinged with the surreality of dub music; the sleeve designed by his close friend, Jean-Michel Basquiat, (who also produced the track) quizzically states that the disc is a Test Pressing. Well, of course. Though the disc's "iconoclastic panzer" rhythms really were meant to be just a test pressing -- for Rammellzee everything was a test, an experiment.

Rammellzee was truly different -- not just from the other artists who surrounded him, like Fab5Freddy, Basquiat, and Futura 2000, innovators all, but from anyone else on the planet.
