In our current issue Roberto Quezada-Dardon writes about the upsurge in Hdslr activity from manufacturers and accessories makers. Now, the new releases are coming fast and furious. Via Engadget, Canon has announced the Eos 60D. And it’s got a flip-out screen. From the site: Well, what do we have here? Last we heard about the Canon Eos 60D it was just a twinkle in our articulating screen of a peripheral vision. And now it’s official — my, how times have changed. Here’s what we know about the 50D successor (with definite nods to the Rebel T2i’s feature set): the 18-megapixel Dslr has a single Digic 4 processor and boasts 1080p H.264 video with an in-camera movie editing feature, manual audio level control, a...

Setting Eric Lavallee's "American New Wave 25: Class of 2010" at Ioncinema alongside Filmmaker's annual roundup of "25 New Faces of Independent Film," you'll find very little overlap but plenty of multi-tasking resourcefulness. Also in the new Summer 2010 issue of Filmmaker: Brandon Harris talking with Gaspar Noé about Enter the Void, Jason Guerrasio's interview with Amir Bar-Lev (The Tillman Story), Lance Weiler on transmedia and Anthony Kaufman: "Why Won't Kickstarter and Twitter Save Indie Film?" In its tech section, Filmmaker staff and friends recommend apps and Roberto Quezada-Dardon evaluates the latest HDSLRs.
"Tamra Davis's documentary Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child might make you weep (it did me) and might help you better appreciate a painter whose work matters enormously in the history of late-twentieth-century art." Amy Taubin for Artforum: "It achieves these ends largely though an abundance of footage of its subject at work and with a long interview that...

Each week I hear from more and more filmmakers who are shooting professional pieces on the new Canon, Nikon and Panasonic still cameras. This footage from 23-year-old filmmaker Khalid Mohtaseb of Next Level Pictures is some of the most gorgeous I've seen. It's shot on the Canon 5D Mkii using the Magic Lanterns Firmware Update as well as a Kessler Pocket Dolly. Egypt / Lebanon Montage from Khalid Mohtaseb on Vimeo. For more on these cameras, see here at Filmmaker "Shutterbugs" and "Pimp Your Dslr," both by Roberto Quezada-Dardon.

Just posted in our new issue is Roberto Quezada-Dardon's second article for us about shooting on the new Dslr still cameras. This one is "Pimp your Dslr," in which Quezada-Dardon looks at some of the new accessories that are being manufactured to bring video camera functionality to these cameras. He also has his own blog, Outtakes, in which he's posting a lot of great related material, including links to Canon 5D workflows , blog posts on working with HD, and outtakes from the pieces he's written for Filmmaker, which include extended interviews with filmmakers like Zak Forsman. Recommended.

Select stories from the Summer issue are now online. Check out our annual 25 New Faces of Independent Film list. Jeffrey Levy-Hinte talks about his doc, Soul Power. And Lynn Shelton, Mark Duplass, Joshua Leonard and the rest of the creative team behind the Sundance sensation Humpday talk about the process to make this poignant comedy. Plus, Roberto Quezada-Dardon follows up on his Dslr piece from the Spring issue with a look at the accessories that are bringing video camera functionality to single-lens reflex cameras. Esther B. Linda Wissmath is the Equpment Supervisor, School of Film/Video, California Institute for the Arts, and she attended Nab this year and kindly offered to share her thoughts with Filmmaker readers. Wissmath's take on several new cameras is a nice tie-in to Roberto Quezada-Dardon's piece in the new Filmmaker on directors making movies with their new Dslr cameras. The big news in acquisition this year is the pressure being put on the video divisions of companies by their Dslr divisions. These divisions appear to stay very separate, and even though Canon had their Dslr cameras at Nab there seemed to be a little contention between the "video" sales people at Canon who kept strictly to answering questions about their own products. All the...
