Most would agree that Paul Verhoeven‘s Total Recall is one of the best two or three Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. It’s definitely up there in the pantheon of great action movies, with it standing the test of time very well over the years, with not even a lousy remake taking the shine off this gem. Ultra-violent and often hilarious, it’s Verhoeven at his most unhinged, with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Douglas Quaid, an ordinary guy who just might be a secret agent from Mars named Hauser.
Verhoeven directed Total Recall from a screenplay by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, and Gary Goldman (Jon Povill also receives a story credit), based on the novelette “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. The film has the following synopsis:
Douglas Quaid is a bored construction worker in the year 2084 who dreams of visiting the colonized Mars. He visits “Rekall,...

As I dug into the brand new 4K release of Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall, it struck me that it had been nearly 15 years since I last sat down and watched it. And once it was over, I realized just how much of a mistake that was, because Total Recall is still a brutally fun and somewhat trippy experience that definitely ushered in a new era of heady sci-fi action films throughout the 1990s and also proved that, heading into a new decade, Arnold Schwarzenegger was still the tops when it came to headlining ambitious cinematic projects that went against the grain.
If you’re reading this, chances are you probably have a good idea of what Total Recall is all about, so I’ll keep this overview brief. Based on the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” Total Recall transports us to the...

Total Recall Directed by: Len Wiseman Written by: Kurt Wimmer, Mark Bomback (screenplay), Ronald Shusett, Dan O'Bannon, Jon Povill, Kurt Wimmer (screen story) Starring: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bokeem Woodbine, Bill Nighy, John Cho, Will Yun Lee When plans were announced to remake the sci-fi classic Total Recall (1990), they were largely met with skepticism. Most people still hold the original in high regard, so why mess with a good thing? Adding fuel to the fire was the questionable choice of replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger with Colin Farrell this time around. One look at Ah-nuld and there was not a shadow of a doubt that he could kick anyone’s ass, but Farrell? Not so much. However, the filmmakers made the wise decision to differentiate this version from the original by revamping the story rather than remaking it directly. Whether or not this remake is warranted is still open to debate,...

The film clips are starting to roll in for Total Recall, and I'll bet you a dime this won't be the last clip that we see for the sci-fi film. Why a dime? Because that's what I just found in my pocket. The new clip is called "Activated" and features an exchange of words between Kate Beckinsale and Bryan Cranston. Total Recall: Ultimate Rekall Edition
Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Ronny Cox | Written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, Jon Povill, Gary Goldman | Directed by Paul Verhoeven
Total Recall is arguably a film that sits firmly in the domain of cinematic nostalgia and has definite cult status. People look at the remake that is currently being publicised and as usual some look forward to it and some complain that it’s a remake that is just not needed. I think my view is that it’s a remake that needs to be done right. The original, while good, is a flawed throwback to eighties schlock sci-fi classics but got lost in translation of constant re-writes and ever changing directors; Strangely though it still holds up and for its time is quite an ambitious tale.

The first official TV spot for Len Wiseman's awesome looking Total Recall reboot has been released, and it's got a few bits of new footage for you. The film is an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. The movie has a great cast of actors that includes Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, John Cho, and Bill Nighy.
Even though this is a remake of a fun 90's sci-fi film, this reboot looks like it could be a hell of a lot better. I'm excited to see this one, it's got a great style and feel to it.

One of the great things about some Star Trek fans is that they do more than just watch the show or collect memorabilia. We all know that some Trekkies like to dress up as their favorite crew member or alien and even gather together in conventions to share their passion for Star Trek. A select few, however, go even further and create their own Star Trek shows. Within a few years of the demise of the original 1960s series (Tos), fans began to publish their own fanzines, while others wrote their own stories and novels which they shared freely with other Trekkies. At times they took Tos characters on new adventures where they encountered new aliens. Some even created new settings, ships, and characters. These community efforts helped keep the Star Trek universe alive during the drought years before the movies and the premiere of the Star Trek: The Next Generation...

We recently reviewed Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall on episode 311 of the Sound On Sight podcast, alongside John Carter. Needless to say we are all still huge fans of the flick, even decades later. Who doesn’t remember Johnny-cab whistling the Norwegian national anthem, or the down and dirty martial arts brawl between Stone and Ticotin – not to mention one of Schwarzenegger’s most famous one liners: “Consider that a divorce!” We try our best to keep things timely, and now just today the first teaser for the remake has been released. The full trailer will be shown during the Celtics/Heat game on ABC Sunday April 1, and will most likely appear online shortly after. In the meantime, check out this tease. Enjoy!

It’s official, it your going to be a mega blockbuster tentpole movie, then you get the trailer for a trailer treatment. But if you can’t wait that long, then we got the trailer for the Total Recall trailer here.
As you can see there are some familiar set pieces that appear in Wiseman’s Total Recall that appeared in Paul Verhoeven / Arnold Schwarzenegger version. Whether or not that is a fan service or just lazy production remains to be seen. My thoughts are on the former though.
Total Recall opens on August 3.

This is going to be a thing now, isn’t it? Sony Pictures have followed suit with other studios and released a preview teaser for a trailer for their upcoming sci-fi reboot Total Recall. After an early leak of footage, here is our first glimpse at some finished setpieces which seem to feature many explosions, as we’ve come to expect from director Len Wiseman. Despite my liking for Colin Farrell, I can’t muster up any excitement for this one, especially considering Kurt Wimmer (responsible for the terrible Law Abiding Citizen and Salt) had a hand in the script.

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy join the cast of Len Wiseman‘s Total Recall (2012). Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy join a Total Recall film that is actually a remake of a 1990 science fiction film of the same name that Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, and Ronny Cox starred in. Total Recall is “based on the Philip K. Dick story ‘We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.’ Directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, Jon Povill, and Gary Goldman, it won a Special Achievement Academy Award for its visual effects. The soundtrack composed by Jerry Goldsmith won the Bmi Film Music Award.”
Kate Beckinsale will play Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell)’s wife Lori and Jessica Biel (nice photos of her here and here) will play Rachel, a “girl Quaid meets in his spy life”. Bill Nighy will be playing Quatto, the leader of the resistance.

Sony Pictures has offered Kate Beckinsale the role of Lori in their remake of Total Recall which already has Colin Farrell and Bryan Cranston attached to star. This is the first news we’ve heard of Beckinsale possibly being attached to the film, but it comes as no surprise seeing that she’s married to Len Wiseman, the film’s director. The two have worked together in two of the Underworld films.
Earlier reports have said Diane Kruger, Jessica Biel and Kate Bosworth each read for the part of Lori. If Beckinsale decides to take the role of Lori, she will be playing opposite Farrell, who would be her husband in the film. Deadline also reports Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are “serious contenders” for the role of Melina, a Martian freedom fighter.

Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston is in negotiations to play the lead villain in the Total Recall remake coming from Universal. The original film from 1990 was based on the Phillip K. Dick short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale which followed the story of Douglas Quaid, a man who is constantly haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars where he buys a literal “dream vacation” from a company called Rekall Inc. Quaid starts to believe he is a secret agent fighting against the evil Mars administrator Cohaagen.
In this remake from director Len Wiseman, the story is essentially the same, but revolves around two nations, Euromerica and New Shanghai, as they are about to enter into a war together.
